So, here's my #homelab / #selfhosting #question:

I've set my sights on an eBay listing for a #Dell #PowerEdge R720 w/ 2x Xeon E5-2643's, 96 GB of PC3-10600R RAM, and 8x 3.5" HDD bays, all for just under $300. (Supposedly 3.5" bays, a bit confused on this point as their listing disagrees with the title – I've messaged the seller for clarification.)

My hope is to just drop the TrueNAS drives from the original machine "as-is" into the server and hopefully at the worst have to do some boot repair.

Anyway, the actual questions are:

• I know next to nothing about actual server equipment – is this plan rotten from the beginning?
• Is this server a decent "starting point" for a home lab that's graduating off consumer grade hardware?
• Will I need much of anything else in addition to the blade itself??
