  1. Gawd I relate to this so much. I am part of a Chinese drama forum and the amount of people giving negative reviews to Chinese dramas with ambiguous, non-happily-ever-after endings drives me wild.

I am reading a 200-year-old collection of short stories from China that would probably get a negative reviews on Goodreads because most Western readers won't like the ambiguous endings. Not to mention Chinese stories don't follow the approved, “right” story structure. They will feel like unfinished stories, stories that end with no resolution. They don't realise these stories are literally a “front”, an allegory, for deep criticisms of the Qing dynasty. 🫪 The Chinese are very known for talking in metaphors, allegories, poetry. They are not direct people. (It kinda will get you killed back then lol)

  4. I've been dipping into "Lost Souls", a volume of short stories by Hwang Sunwon.

One that has particularly caught my attention is "Booze", written in 1945.

Following the August 15th liberation of Korea from Japanese rule, the Nakamura distillery is to be taken over by Koreans. Which Koreans though? As we follow the head clerk Chunho's attempts to manage the takeover, his household, and himself, we see a decent individual struggling with challenges going way beyond a change of name for the distillery.

"Booze" not only absorbed me in its narrative but also made me think about both decolonization and writing about decolonization.

  7. CW: Mature and potentially triggering content (gore, profanity, sex, violence)

I finished reading Out by Natsuo Kirino. My thoughts on the #book are out here on this #Goodreads review. #booktwt #booktoot #bookreview #AsianLiterature #JapaneseLiterature

  8. Currently reading: Out
    Author: Natsuo Kirino

I'm 40 pages in and I'm loving this. Potentially an amazing read. But the scenes are incredibly vivid and graphic. Approach this #book with discretion, as it's quite dark and disturbing.

  9. For a few months now I've been working on my 100-poem collection tentatively entitled "Ad Infinitum," a project which inspiration had just slowly emerged in between my philosophical and scientific work. Excited to share it with you soon!

  10. Wir haben für Heyne gerade ein großes Epos aus eingekauft. Wahnsinnig spannendes Worldbuilding und faszinierende Figuren – und ein Text aus einer mir noch unbekannten – freue mich schon sehr darauf!
