Oleander aphids (Aphis nerii) on a swamp milkweed seedpod that has been chewed open, I think, by a monarch butterfly larva. Almost all aphid species adopt a headstand posture (facing ground) when feeding. Interesting. #aphids #milkweed #hemiptera #insects #entomology #asclepias

CW: more on milkweed/asclepias
Impossibly light, silky, meant to travel forever on the wind, much like taraxacum/dandelion. When spring comes around, I'll test cold stratification (presence of certain cold conditions needed to trigger germination in the seed) and try to grow some myself. The #Asclepias genus is fascinating with many species; other faves for me are curassavica, californica and perennis.
