“Excuse me, I have research I wish to finish.” Duke Ferdinand said to Hannelore and Rozemyne. Then he turned his back and left.

Most people would have considered his response extremely rude. After all, he had #just married Hannelore of Dunkelfelger, but Rozemyne, his first wife, was used to it, and Hannelore knew the wedding had only been to please Rozemyne.

“Don’t let it worry you,” Aub Rozemyne said. “He’s like that—Shall I show you the library?”

Hannelore blinked. They had barely returned from their wedding, and neither of them was acting like it was a big deal. Surely Rozemyne at least would be clingy and mushy; after all, she’d been the one sending romantic gifts. “Could I have been wrong about the whole thing? Was it just a political match? What about love and romance? It’s my cursed timing again, isn’ it!”

“No, that’s the old me,” she thought. “But I’m not ‘Cry Baby Hanne’ anymore. This is my reality, and I’m going to make the best of it. If she doesn’t love me, I’ll pin her down and do quests until she does!”

“Sure, I would love that,” she said.

“Great, Book Wives Forever!” Rozemyne pumped her fist and led the way.

The Aub waved to a servant to take the food away. “Send my daughter in.”

Hannelore soon appeared, apprehension etched into every line of her face. But unlike when she was younger, there was no sign of her wilting. She was prepared for whatever her parents had to tell her.

Her father waved to a seat, and when his daughter complied, he said, “It’s settled. You are to be Duke Ferdinand’s second wife. It’s slightly beneath your station, but a good match nonetheless. It will bring our two duchies closer and ensure preferred access to Rozemyne's innovations. A good marriage is the #lynchpin of long-term diplomacy.”

The tension in Hannelore’s face eased. “I welcome Versprechredi's blessing. At last my timing has been good.”

“Indeed, the goddess has blessed you,” her mother said. “We were worried you would settle for a loveless marriage. Kenntrips and Rasantark are fine men, but you were never taken with them in that way. I am overjoyed that you have found a useful and loving match. It's a surprising and somewhat unusual arrangement, but Rozemyne is an unusual woman. Take care to stay in her favor; you can expect only what duty demands from Ferdinand.”

“It surprised me as well, but I think I can be happy with Rozemyne,” Hannelore replied.

“Good, good.” The duke rejoined the discussion. “Ferdinand sent engagement presents.”

The girl looked at the books her father had passed her. A wry expression came to her face as she read the titles: “The History of Ahrensbach,” “Ahrensbach Legal Codex,” and a new volume called “The Legislative Decrees of Aub Rozemyne.”

The Aub coughed. “He said they would be useful to you since you’ll be living in Alexandria soon.”

“The man doesn’t have a romantic bone in his body,” Sieglinde said. “But Rozemyne sent this,” passing her daughter a manuscript titled “The Romance of Vegalinde and Altairhart.” “She said you would be the very first person to read it.”

“Don’t forget the other present,” Werdekrf added. “It's much better than those old books. It will look wonderful on you.” If anyone had doubted his feelings towards his daughter, his fond smile revealed his deeper feelings.

The item he handed her was a headdress featuring a new design of tiny lace edelweiss intertwined with cornflowers. Its net-like cap was set with pearls, and a dyed silk train flowed down the back.

Her mother looked from the hairpiece to her daughter. She too had a soft smile. “It will look lovely at your wedding. You'll be quite the trendsetter.”

“Dither, dither, dither!” Sieglinde's words echoed in the private dining chamber where she sat with her husband. Taking a deep breath, she swallowed her next words. “Are you an idiot?!”

Werdekrf wilted in his chair, his dinner half consumed. His wife had held back the whole time the Archduke’s Conference was underway. But her cold fury had been evident. Now that they were home, it looked like she was going to let loose.

The Aub was pleased when she continued in a more reasonable tone. “We’re lucky Duke Ferdinand didn’t walk out on us. You know his views on dither.” Sarcasm crept into her voice as she imitated her husband’s voice and words. “‘We really can’t consent unless there is a wedding dither match.’ Would you make Hannelore Eifersuneid’s daughter?” (The goddess had unrequited feelings for Chaocipher, the goddess of chaos.)

“It seemed an excellent opportunity, and I gave it up as soon as he resisted.” The Aub pushed away his food and pretended to study the tapestry depicting a dither match.

“What if he had taken offense? The #Sovereignty had approved the proposed engagement. The Zent wouldn’t have been pleased if this match had fallen through. More importantly, Hannelore is excited. Just think how it would affect her if she were thrown over a second time. Has Jugereise not visited her enough?” (Goddess of Separation, associated with lost love and separation.)

“You are right, of course. Sometimes you win dither by playing the long game. Hannelore can teach them the love of the game once she is there.”

Sieglinde rolled her eyes but said no more. Arguing with her dither-crazed husband was futile.

After the greetings, Eglantine’s maid sampled the food and drink to assure everyone that nothing had been poisoned. Tea and snacks were soon in hand, and the Zent began: “I hope you will pardon Schutzaria’s hand in our affairs, but swift winds are required to obtain Gebordnung’s blessings.”

Rozemyne knit her brow as she #puzzled out the meaning: “Pardon the sudden summons, but it is necessary to maintain order.” Even though she was used to it, she still wished nobles would speak clearly rather than masking everything behind metaphors.

Eglantine continued, “I understand, Duke Ferdinand, you will seek Versprechredi’s blessings. This comes as a surprise and has stirred up the other duchies, especially Korinthsdaum where Eifersuneid whispers council. So, to avoid Chaocipher attendance this year, I would ask if this is true.”

Rozemyne decoded the message again. Understanding what Versprechredi’s blessing meant was easy; Duke Ferdinand would seek a wife. Next, Eifersuneid was the god of jealousy and whispered in Sigiswald, ruler of Korinthsdaum’s ear. No surprise there. Finally, Chaocipher was the goddess of chaos, which meant Eglantine wanted to avoid the council descending into disarray.

Ferdinand put down his tea with a slight clink, showing his irritation, but spoke calmly. “My wife, the Aub, has expressed a wish to cement our relations with Dunkelfelger by making Lady Hannelore my second wife. Her friendship with Rozemyne leads me to believe it would be a good match. The Aub has been handling all the arrangements. We have exchanged gifts, and I received the following.” He laid the handkerchief embroidered with intertwining cornflowers and edelweiss on the table. “We didn’t think we needed to consult with the Sovereignty first, but I assume we have your approval, Zent.”

Eglantine didn’t react to the jab or the slight inflection on her title. Instead, she looked at Rozemyne. “I didn’t realize. I knew you were friends, but without Schicksantracht, I had not foreseen Versprechredi.”

She turned back to Ferdinand and said, “You have my blessing, of course. I will make sure the other duchies know you have my approval. Have you formally spoken to Hannelore’s parents yet?”

“That’s next,” he replied.

While Ascendance of a Bookworm continues into a second cour (with no more episodes with libraries or the protagonist Myne as a librarian), Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia (set in the 13th century) has the protagonist aiming to get back her book of Eucidlis from an arrogant imperialistic Mongolian princess, and Draw This, Then Die! has the protagonists cleaning the room of a manga book store on the second floor to become their club space, in the second episode of season 2 of You and I Are Polar Opposites, “Dilemma of a Winter’s Night”, Yamada meets Nishi in the middle of winter break as a pretext to see her. While he doesn’t confess his feelings, and nor does she, he wrongly thinks the library doesn’t have a “nice” atmosphere, even though it does. They choose between going to the study room where talking, food, and drink are forbidden, and a free space, with Yamada going with the latter.

Otherwise, in the episode, Nishi admits she comes to the library “quite a bit,” which Yamada finds commendable, and admits he can’t study at all, at home, as it is far too distracting. He admits that inviting her there was just a pretext by accident while she admits that she comes there every day, and has finished all her homework. He is shocked, she admits she wanted a pretext as well, and he stops himself from saying they should date, feeling it isn’t a right place. He ends up being quiet during their date-not-date while studying.

There’s another library scene in the episode “New School Term”. Even the description on Crunchyroll indicates this, saying, “Suzuki takes Yamada to the school library, with an ulterior motive in mind. Nishi is happy that Yamada came, but anxious that others might find out about their relationship.” Shenanigans ensue, while Nishi and Taira work as library for their student library duty. At one point, Taira even wants to process the book returns, while Nishi isn’t sure how to handle Yamada there, and Suzuki offers to help Yamada with reshelving books at another point. She also came to see Yamada. Funny enough, no one else comes into the library except them which seems strange (and they comment on this later, saying few people come there anymore), because this is the school library after all! I also like how Taira helps out Nishi and even gives Yamada a book recommendation, showing he is a true friend. I liked how Yamada and Suzuki enjoy reading books in the library, while showing the library duties, like checking in and out books in a way that seems relaxing, making it seems like something you do every day. There is a cute moment where Yamada and Nishi say each other’s full names.

Then there’s the awful news that Crunchyroll removed Black Lagoon, along with other series like Blood Blockade Battlefront and Grimgar, Ashes and Illusions, as has been reported elsewhere, without any warning. I have an account on that streaming service and the history (which shows what anime series I have watched) doesn’t even mention it at all! I mention this here because that series has a library scene as I noted in my post on here on July 2nd, in the episode “The Succession” (s1 ep 20), first saying that in the episode “Yukio is reading a book by Martin Heidegger as shown in the 20th episode (“Succession”) of the classic crime thriller anime Black Lagoon, which is replete with having girls with guns, particularly hothead Chinese-American Revy.” I went into further detail, saying:

…Yukio is reading a book by Martin Heidegger, as she tells her friend Maki, in the school library, calling the book philosophical and “very powerful.” In contrast, Maki says she likes skincare guides and modern horror books, with Yukio saying she remembered Maki saying she liked Anne Rice. They talk a bit more with Yukio saying she sometimes feels like she is caught inside of book worlds, and viewers see some of the library bookshelves. She says she doesn’t like Stephen King and Maki says she thought Yukio would like Edgar Allan Poe. She says she doesn’t like the ones that imagine the night, and she does not like the world as it makes her scared, that it is not romantic at all.

 

There is a second scene in the episode in the reading room where Yukio is thinking about the gang war between the Russian mafia and Japanese yakuza, and does not listen as much to what Maki tells her and decides to not tell her troubles. The reading room is shown briefly in the next episode, but not enough to mention it here. It is worth noting that Heidegger was directly involved with the Nazis from 1933 to 1945, and even banned from teaching after the war until 1949 (when the ban was lifted). He also never expressed remorse for being involved with the Nazis, which is funny because Hannah Arendt, who became known for her political theory against authoritarianism, including Nazism and fascism. I’m not sure why Heidegger was mentioned (in the manga as well), except to possibly indicate that Yukio was intellectual, nihilistic, and his existential philosophy was appealing. At the same time, I seriously doubt she was a Nazi as there was an earlier plot line in the series where the protagonists stole loot from a submarine filled by wannabe Nazis/neo-Nazis and killed a bunch of them, but rather a bit of a mob boss, if I have to guess. At the same time, during his life, Heidegger had intellectual contact with Japanese scholars like racist Hajime Tanabe (who later regretted defending claimed Japanese state and racial superiority) and pro-militarist Shūzō Kuki over the years, influencing his work, according to Reinhard May.

This all comes when I came across recently this video of an anime fan expressing anger it was removed (along with Crunchyroll locking their anime store behind a paywall effectively), along with this video on the fading, yet important, legacy of the series:

A late entry here is the third episode of I Want To Love You Till Your Dying Day. In that episode, Sheena Totsuki goes to the library of her school-of-sorts/orphanage/training institute, to study. She had wanted to go with Mimi Kagari, but she is unable to so because Mimi left to fight enemies. While there she meets her school friends, Lizzy Seiran and Ali Maud who are a couple themselves, and she reveals what Mimi’s guardian (Fran) told her. Later in the episode, however, Mimi reveals her secret to Sheena, shocking her beyond belief. In the scene itself, you see the wonder of the library which is well-used by students, and seems like a place to relax (and study), with wooden tables, and all the books you’d like to read.

There was an additional library scene in the fourth episode of that same series, with flashbacks to Sheena thinking of Mimi, and a new scene of Mimi balancing books on her head, while Sheena is learning about resurrection magic, and is surprised by Airi and Seiran. One of my favorite parts (shown below) is when the bell rings and breaks Mimi’s concentration, annoying her, as she almost trying to show off a bit by balancing books on her head.

Last but least is episode 50 of Detective Conan (also known as Case Closed), “The Library Murder Case” / “The Book Without Pages”.  I have been looking forward to watching this episode for a long time, but I finally got to watch it this month, at long last, an episode which fulfills so many stereotypes when it comes to fictional librarians and libraries. I’ll write a whole post on this, but to give the quick and short version of this, Conan Edogawa, a kid detective (wasn’t always a kid) works with his school friends of sorts to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of a librarian, and soon suspect the library director. They learn that there are fake books in the children’s section where drugs were being stored, and this is why the director murdered that librarian. He even tries to kill all of them too, but they turn all the bookshelves into dominos so they fall on him, allowing the police to come in and arrest him, taking him away, while they find the body (which was on top of an elevator). It’s gory, but also feeds into many stereotypes, which, perhaps, is not at all a surprise for an episode that came out on March 1997. Some even put some parts of the episode as one of the top scariest moments in the series!

In the fourth issue of The Burning Scheme, the protagonists, Vera at Sierra Verde Preparatory School, go to the library together, for a group project, with one of them, Calliope, saying the other (Vera) is “pretty.” Vera doesn’t like this closeness and leaves shortly thereafter, to the disappointment of Calliope.

In the episode “CH 12 | Library Hours” of My Awkward Princess, Alice Evelyn and Luna Charlotte do library service together, with Luna annoying Alice, and Luna getting “tamed” by someone else when they give her a lollipop. At one point, Luna catches Alice when she falls, to her annoyance, saying Luna just wanted to touch her, when in reality she just wanted to make sure she wasn’t hurt. And Alice thanks Luna. All this time she is giving instructions to the student vice-president who is relatively incompetent.

Otherwise, in the episode “|CH 13| Routine”, Alice is overworking herself in the library, feeling it will get better the next day and that there cannot be any distractions because the student council depends on her. She feels that she is almost perfect. One day, Luna is with her in the library, believes with Alice believing she should not slow down, and that she has keep working. She pushes it off, despite blood coming out of her nose, saying she isn’t her problem, telling her to stop distracting her, while Luna is deeply worried.

In the episode after this, “|CH 14| Almost Everyone,” Luna goes to the library to read, with Alice asking her why her section of the library isn’t organized yet, and starts bossing her around. Luna finds Alice, who she calls “puppy,” entertaining, and thinks back to when Alice thanked her for catching her, saying that doesn’t happen. Later, in the stairwell, Alice gives her cookies and tells her to show up the next day on time, making Luna blush because Alice gave her sweets (remembering that she likes them), and calls her “dangerous.”

The new version of Literary Link is finally out! That series focuses on libraries at its center, as noted in the series description: “Delinquent Faye Scott just wants to keep her head down and get through her latest sentencing — finish her community service and make it across the graduation stage as unscathed as possible — but her old enemies aren’t letting her go without a fight. However, a certain library volunteer might be the one to show Faye just the kindness she needs to change her life for the better.” I wrote a review about this series a while ago, saying:

Lastly, there are two issues of Pinky Promise. In the first of these, the protagonist, Eva, tries to remind the school group to stay on task (picking books for their presentation), as they work together in the school library, and threatens to tell their teacher, Miss Cielo, that they are wasting time. Another classmate tells Hallie that Eva is too serious about school, asking her to convince Eva to not report them. Through it all, Eva is worried about Hallie and the group she is a part of, and when admiring her, she thinks back to a sexy dream she had, leading her to begin blushing. After her fellow classmate believes something may be wrong, Eva denies it, then gets up to find a book. Following this, Hallie gets up to follow Eva.

In the next of those issues, Eva thinks about her reaction and how embarrassing it was, while she starts to look for a book. Hallie comes behind her, startling her, when all she wants is to check in on her. Eva keeps blushing and denying that anything is up, saying she had been different since that morning, after Hallie spent the night at her place. She notices that Eva has been avoiding her, with Eva literally turning her head away, as she stands in front of a library bookshelf. She ends up admitting she can’t look her in the eyes because of a dream she had, where Hallie was touching and kissing her. Even after she says she is embarrassed and shouldn’t have dreamed about it, Hallie teases her about it, saying she is being “naughty,” with Eva saying it is only because she has been teasing her so much lately. Hallie gets close to her and says she is cute every time she teases her, something Eva thinks about later.

In terms of a place of knowledge, consider the 10th episode of the drama/mystery/romance entitled The Apothecary Diaries. In the latter half of the show’s 10th episode, entitled “Honey,” Gaoshun, an assistant of Jinshi, tells Maomao that he will search the court library for information about past events in the rear palace. Later, an assistant behind the information desk helps him. He finds a relevant book and he gives it to Maomao. In it, she learns about events in the past, and that a baby was delivered by Doctor Luomen (her dad!), moving this story in an interesting direction!

Zent Eglantine’s chief scholar, Roswitha, greeted Alexandria’s arriving rulers. If the pair hadn’t been expecting her, they would have been stunned by the arrogance of the “invitation” she offered. As it was, Ferdinand frowned throughout Roswitha’s speech. They weren't even being allowed to settle in before being rushed off to meet the Zent.

Rozemyne recalled Ferdinand’s thoughts when they were first informed that an invitation was pending: “This is just what I was afraid of. Give a person the crown, and they will begin to throw their weight around. Be prepared, if she tries to bully us, I’ll flatten her.”

Rozemyne replied, “Eglantine is a #friend. She’ll have a good explanation for this.”

“She had better. You would be advised to remember that friendship has no place in royal politics. Nor should it in inter-duchy relations. Her job is to ensure the welfare of the Sovereignty and Yurgenschmidt. Ours is to look after the interests of Alexandria. Please remember that.”

Rozemyne nodded. Any other response would have precipitated a full-on scolding.

That conversation had taken place in Alexandria, but now they were at the Royal Academy for the Archduke Conference, faced with a “tea party.” She always dreaded these gatherings, and this one sounded worse than usual with Ferdinand in a bad mood and some serious, unknown business at hand.

Fortunately, Roswitha gave Rozemyne little time to worry, instead leading them straight to a meeting room richly decorated in the current Sovereignty style. Thick tapestries covered the walls illustrating various religious scenes. A centuries-old oak table lay in the center of the room, surrounded by chairs with luxurious cushions. A selection of tea and treats was laid out, including old-fashioned, heavy, sugary pastries, as well as many of Aub Rozemyne’s lighter creations.

Under other circumstances, Rozemyne would have been delighted to see the Zent display her goods, but not today. This wasn’t a friendly social tea, but something serious.

“Would you be in a good mood?” Rozemyne asked Ferdinand.

It was a fair question, considering the dark circles under his eyes. He had spent the last three days in his private study. The duke met the question with a skeptical look as he took in the baked goods and an #arabesque tea-set on the table.

“I’m not in the mood for taste-testing. Ask a courtier; they’ll be happy to help,” was his reply.

“No, that’s not it. Hannelore sent these: rose-scented tea and cookies that their chief invented. They’re nice, like lemon drops. It’s like a White Day gift.”

Rozemyne’s voice trailed off. Her husband was smiling, and it sent a shiver through her. She recognized that expression. It was the smile of someone about to order the drowning of a litter of kittens.

His voice was as chilly as his smile, “I’m tired; we’ll talk later in your private room.”

Rozemyne frowned. Private discussions were never good, but later was better than now.

“She sent you a present too,” Rozemyne ventured, producing a white handkerchief. “She even embroidered it with cute cornflowers entwined with edelweiss.”

The duke sank into a chair, gulping a cup of tea, notwithstanding its temperature.

“Rozemyne, is this what you want?”

“No, it’s for you.”

“Rozemyne! Are you a total idiot!? They mistook your gifts for a marriage proposal. I knew they would. Since Hannelore can’t marry you, they assume you intend for her to become my second wife.”

“What? A marriage proposal?” the aub looked stunned.

“It’s obvious that at the next Council of Aubs, Dunkelfelger will approach me about this. If you wish to bring Hannelore here to be part of our family, I’ll agree. It wouldn’t hurt to have a stronger alliance with them. But if I accept, she becomes your responsibility. I have no interest in a second wife.”

Ferdinand rose. “Think about it. I will get your answer later.”

Rozemyne was relieved that Ferdinand wasn’t in his lab. She had hinted that she would like to see him today, but Ferdinand was Ferdinand and work and research always came first with him. Today he joined her for the first meal of the day.

“You wanted to see me,” he said. He poured himself some tea, but said nothing more.

“It’s Star-Cross Day,” Rozemyne said.

A look of irritation flickered for an instant on her husband’s face, but was gone by the time he said, “Is it? I hadn’t noticed.”

The aub pushed a red box elaborately decorated with shimmering cut shells. “For you,” she said. Mild disappointment shadowed her face. She had been hoping he might remember and get her a book, but that would have never occurred to Ferdinand.

He sighed as irritation flickered across his face again. With one finger, he flipped open the box and looked inside. “At least they aren’t coach beetles,” he said. If Rozemyne had been expecting him to be excited, she was disappointed.

“Are you going to try them?” she asked.

He took a red, heart-shaped cookie and nibbled on it, nodded, and spoke. “Not bad. We should declare a monopoly on the sale of desert-heart leaves. I’m sure others can copy these, but if we control the prime ingredient, it will bring wealth to the duchy. And if handled correctly, we can smoke out some of the #graft in the provinces.”

He popped the rest of the cookie into his mouth, not letting a crumb fall on his outfit.

Rozemyne smiled.

The aub’s eyes gleamed as her husband took out yet another cookie. This was as good as it got in terms of receiving praise from Ferdinand.

“Who else did you give these to?” he asked.

“Just Hannelore,” she replied. Ferdinand froze mid-bite.

“Can’t I say I’m too busy?” Hannelore asked.

“I’ll tell her you only have a few moments to spare. We’re in a public place, and you’re rumored to be on excellent terms with her. Your retreat would give the other duchies a hint that there are problems between you. They will try to take advantage of it.”

“Very well.” If only this were an open battle on the Dither Field, Hannelore would know what to do. But the complexities of inter-duchy diplomacy were a minefield she didn’t enjoy. Still, it had to be done, and she put a brave face on as Sorrona approached and gave the expected fulsome greeting.

Finished with formalities, the Alexandrian woman presented Cordula with a red box. Scarlet ribbons decorated with carnelian gemstone tips adorned the present. The box and ribbons alone made a stunning present. “I hear Dregarnuhr, the Goddess of Time, has woven your threads exceptionally short today, but when you have time, please partake of the contents,” Sorrona said, curtsying.

“Thank you,” Hannelore said, keeping her smile on. “Aub Rozemyne is more than generous. Please pass to her and Duke Ferdinand the word that Dunkelfelger seeks the wisdom of Erwachlehren. We will in due time show our proper appreciation for Brennwaerme’s gifts.”

This response left Sorrona puzzled, though she would hardly dare say so. Why would Hannelore refer to Brennwaerme, the god of passion?

While she considered this, the Dunkelfelger noble glanced at Cordula and, receiving a nod of approval, rose and excused herself. “It seems Dregarnuhr, the Goddess of Time, has woven today’s threads with exceptional speed and grace.”

Once Hannelore was back in her chambers, Cordula commended her. “You did well. Your parents will be pleased with your diplomacy. If only you’d done as well in the past.”

“Is the box from Wilfried?” Hannelore asked. It was a slender hope since Sorrona and Rozemyne were from the Duchy of Alexandria, while Wilfried remained in Ehrenfest. But perhaps Rozemyne was acting on her brother’s behalf.

Cordula inspected the box, and finding it safe, passed it to her charge. Inside were light-red heart-shaped cookies. Each one had a “desert-heart” leaf pressed into its surface.

“I think not,” the head maid said, crushing Hannelore’s hopes. “It’s from Aub Rozemyne, my lady. I fear you must make your feelings clear to your parents about a match with Ferdinand. The present we return must reflect the direction we wish to take. We can no longer ignore their overtures. A romantic present on Star-Cross Day can only mean one thing.”

A faint shiver went through Hannelore as she arrived early in the commons. Perhaps it was a premonition of Rozemyne’s reformation of Star-Cross Day. Less superstitiously, it was that the Alexandrian’s area was busier than usual.

She’d been successful in dodging Sorrona, Rozemyne’s Alexandrian book buddy, for the last week on instructions from home. Further contact was undesirable until it was clear what Rozemyne and Ferdinand’s intentions were. Their gift of the Shumil book reader had opened a can of worms that Hannelore’s parents were desperately trying to deal with. What could it mean?

She glanced across the room again. The number of Alexandrians was a bad omen.

“What’s going on?” Hannelore fretted. Had her timing misfired again?

Elusia answered, “They are celebrating Star-Cross Day, an Alexandrian holiday. It has strange customs: the girls give the boys bugs. I hope no one sent live insects this year. There’re stories of them escaping and infecting the school.”

One of the celebrating students approached Cordula. Distracted by this, Hannelore replied vaguely. “Oh.” Dread flooded her being. She had definitely come to the commons at the wrong time. She should have #skipped coming here and eaten breakfast in the dorm.

A prediction proven true when her head maid returned, saying, “Lady Sorrona would like to approach.”

Armed with a name, Rozemyne headed to the library, much to the dismay of her head maid. Rihyarda could have handled it, but Lieseleta lacked the experience and gravitas to control her mistress when she was fired up.

"Lady Carnelia!" Rozemyne shouted, bursting into the reading room the girl was using.

Lieseleta said, just loud enough for the Aub to hear, “At least give her a proper greeting.”

“Of course,” Rozemyne replied.

“May I pray for a blessing in appreciation of this serendipitous meeting, ordained by the harsh judgment of Ewigeliebe, Lady Carnelia?” Rozemyne rushed through her greeting.

“You may.” The lady in question spoke barely loud enough to be heard, trembling like a winter leaf, which wasn’t surprising, given that the Aub had addressed her so suddenly.

“I need something red, romantic, and heart-shaped,” Rozemyne said.

“You might want to explain a bit,” Lieseleta said. She was overstepping herself, but the poor woman Rozemyne was addressing looked on the verge of fainting in fright.

“Sorry, I want something to use with cookies for Star-Cross Day. Something other than those dreadful bugs! I don’t see how anyone could think coach beetles were romantic.”

Lady Carnelia stared, and then, as the word "romantic" sank in, she began thinking. Her brows furrowed, and then a smile touched her lips. “There's the 'desert heart.' They have red, heart-shaped leaves and a mild, pleasant flavor. Perhaps you’ve had tea made from them.”

Rozemyne’s eyes grew wide. “Oh, that lovely mint tea. I think we export it. That would be wonderful.”

Lieseleta was used to her mistress’s use of strange words, but Lady Carnelia looked puzzled at the word “mint.”

Blissfully unaware, the Aub said, “Mild, red, mint cookies with a heart-shaped leaf in their center. Perfect!”

Carried away, she rushed off to see the chef, leaving poor Lady Carnelia to recover in the now silent library.

“Cookies!” she exclaimed.

Indeed, cookies would be ideal for Star-Cross Day, Rozemyne reasoned. They were easy, and the recipe was widespread by now. It had to be different, though, and have the romance of Valentine’s Day.

Red heart-shaped sugar cookies came to mind, but her cookie recipes were widespread, and anyone could make heart-shaped ones. It had to be something special. Something that only bakers who bought the recipe from her could produce. Profits were important; there were so many books to buy.

Different. Romantic. Hard to duplicate.

“Hmm…”

Nothing came to mind.

“Help!” she muttered. “Who can I ask?”

She thought about the people she was close to, most of whom were in Ehrenfest or Dunkelfelger. Not only couldn’t she talk to them, but it would be unfair to ask them to work for the benefit of her duchy. As for her councilors, they were old folks without a romantic bone in their bodies. It would be better to consult an iron #rod than them. As for Ferdinand, she wanted to surprise him.

Wait, she knew! There was a woman who came to the library every day to read romances. What was her name?

“Milburn, what are those?” she asked the chef.

“Those would be pickles, Your Grace. They’re for Star-Cross Day.”

He took down a jar without further instruction, something he would never have done for another noble, let alone the Aub. But Rozemyne was different. She was relaxed about etiquette and had an insatiable curiosity.

He opened the vessel, releasing the smell of vinegar, wine, and spices. Then he reached in extracting a large, flat, brown bug. “This is a coach beetle,” he said, showing it to her.

“Ughhh.” Her response was involuntary as revulsion swept over her. To her, it looked like a giant cockroach. It was definitely something that did not belong in the kitchen.

"Why would you eat that?" she asked, scrunching up her face.

“I suppose you wouldn’t know, Your Grace. Next week is a local holiday celebrating the twin stars #crossing the River of Light and uniting. You must know the legend of Vegalinde and Altairhart. It’s considered an auspicious day for proposals. It is said that if your partner eats one of these, they’ll never stop loving you. Young men make quite a show of swallowing them.”

Rozemyne’s first thought was,"Yuck! Why cockroaches?” Then, "Wait, Tanabata! A weaver and a herdsman separated by a celestial river? Has someone else from Japan visited Alexandria before me?”

The chef continued, “When these little devils mate, the male rides around on the female’s back for weeks. That’s how they got the name coach beetle. Some people believe that men who eat them will be as faithful as the beetles themselves.”

Rozemyne thanked him and departed. “I know one thing: I’m not giving Ferdinand one of those. Revolting!” she said to herself.

The thought of her subjects eating cockroaches wouldn't leave the Aub’s mind. "What a dreadful tradition! Star-Cross Day deserves better. It’s like a Tanabata and Valentine's hybrid. Giving chocolates or making wishes would make more sense than eating bugs!”

Her thoughts continued as she mulled over the problem, "Unfortunately, there isn’t anything similar to chocolate in this universe, but giving sweets to your love sounds just as nice. What could I create for women to give to their favorite person?”

"Mochi.”She’d just introduced that, but it was difficult to make, and the grain was expensive. Ferdinand said they should reserve it for nobles for the time being. Next, she thought of heart-shaped sugar candies. Clear, sparkly red hearts would be cute, but perfecting them would take time.

Rozemyne looked over the city and the sun setting in the desert beyond. The book she had been reading lay in front of her, along with the tea she had been enjoying. She sighed and looked at the letter from Hannelore she had received.

She sighed again. Even though it mentioned the Shumil reader she had given her, the tone was flat and contained metaphors she didn’t understand. There was no way she could get Ferdinand’s help interpreting it. He had been furious that she had given the magic item to her book-buddy. It would have been helpful if he had explained why, but he had told her to speak with her chief maid.

Sorona’s letter had been equally puzzling. Why would Hannelore be avoiding Sorrona? High Tea at The Royal Academy:

She put the letters away, using them as a bookmark in the book she was reading. Since she had used up the library time Ferdinand had allotted her, she would do the next best thing to take her mind off this mystery: Sample treats in the kitchen and share a new recipe with the chef!

When she had first started coming to the royal kitchens, the workers had nearly died of fright, and her husband had lectured her. But since she was now Aub, she could push social limits further, and it wasn’t long before people were used to her visits. She was even almost friends with the chef, Milburn.

Now that the staff knew she might visit any time, the kitchen was always spotless. Scullery maids scrubbed the marble-topped tables and blue and white tile floors until they shone. You could see yourself in the bottoms of copper-bottom pots that hung in rows. Using the cleansers Rozemyne had invented, the servants had scoured all traces of smoke from the row of ovens. It was a far cry from how she had found it right after the war.

Next to the library or her family’s home, the kitchen was one of her favorite places. It was a place of inspiration, where the sight of new things was sure to spark an idea. This time, it was a row of brown ceramic pots, each with two blue stars, that caught her attention.

In the 20th episode of Black Lagoon, Yukio is reading a book by Martin Heidegger, as she tells her friend Maki, in the school library, calling the book philosophical and “very powerful.” In contrast, Maki says she likes skincare guides and modern horror books, with Yukio saying she remembered Maki saying she liked Anne Rice. They talk a bit more with Yukio saying she sometimes feels like she is caught inside of book worlds, and viewers see some of the library bookshelves. She says she doesn’t like Stephen King and Maki says she thought Yukio would like Edgar Allan Poe. She says she doesn’t like the ones that imagine the night, and she does not like the world as it makes her scared, that it is not romantic at all.

There is a second scene in the episode in the reading room where Yukio is thinking about the gang war between the Russian mafia and Japanese yakuza, and does not listen as much to what Maki tells her and decides to not tell her troubles. The reading room is shown briefly in the next episode, but not enough to mention it here. It is worth noting that Heidegger was directly involved with the Nazis from 1933 to 1945, and even banned from teaching after the war until 1949 (when the ban was lifted). He also never expressed remorse for being involved with the Nazis, which is funny because Hannah Arendt, who became known for her political theory against authoritarianism, including Nazism and fascism. I’m not sure why Heidegger was mentioned (in the manga as well), except to possibly indicate that Yukio was intellectual, nihilistic, and his existential philosophy was appealing. At the same time, I seriously doubt she was a Nazi as there was an earlier plot line in the series where the protagonists stole loot from a submarine filled by wannabe Nazis/neo-Nazis and killed a bunch of them, but rather a bit of a mob boss, if I have to guess. At the same time, during his life, Heidegger had intellectual contact with Japanese scholars like racist Hajime Tanabe (who later regretted defending claimed Japanese state and racial superiority) and pro-militarist Shūzō Kuki over the years, influencing his work, according to Reinhard May.

Otherwise, in the ninth episode of A Hundred Scenes of Awajima, there is a brief library scene of the students studying on the library together, learning about people at the school and searching on the local computers, even reading newspaper articles.

Lastly there’s an episode of Gals Can’t Be Kind to Otaku, the 11th episode. Previously, in episode three (noted later), there was a library scene. In this episode, to relax from the festival and feeling he is taking up the time of Kotoko Ijichi and Amane, Takuya Seo (otherwise known as Otaku-kun) hangs out in the school library. While there he hears the rumor that the Mister and Misses from the contest begins dating, with mention of Amane and Ijichi, and some other kids dating them. After they find the book they want and leave, Takuya looks through his phone and sees images of him with Amane and Ijichi, and thinks they may have better matches than him, and he feels anxious about the idea of other people dating them. It seems he is starting to say that he would make the next move, somehow, although it isn’t clear what that would be.

Before this, there have been other episodes in this series with library scenes. In April, I noted that in the third episode of the series, saying that “Ijichi helps the two other protagonists…Takuya…and Amane) study in the school library for midterms but Takuya admires the two gyaru gals in front of him. Some of the books in the school library are shown. Despite Kotoko saying they should keep studying, instead Takuya and Amane have an art battle over their favorite characters of Glittermon in the library.”

Last but not least, Ascendance of a Bookworm FINALLY had an episode with a library, which has been an utter crime for a while, despite the focus of the series on books and the fact that the protagonist was a librarian in her former life. According to my records, the last episode with a library scene, “Re: Ascendance of a Bookworm Part 2”, a recap episode, was in late March 2022! There were no library scenes, at all, in season 3. Entitled “The Gathering of Gutenberg[s],” Myne finds a key to the rare books shelf of the cathedral library, which she happily checks out. She goes to the cabinet with rare books, unlocks it with a key (another barrier to entry). Her attendant, Fran, tells her that these “books” are not actually books. Instead, they are letters on parchment, inside of a box, which were addressed to the former High Bishop. She even agrees, after Fran says she can read the letters as she is now the High Bishop, and report the contents to the Head Priest (Ferdinand).

The letters are filled with bitter grievances about their bad position in life, revealing bribery, and deep ties between the viscount (Gerlach) and the former High Bishop (Bezewanst). She later describes these letters, to Ferdinand as “filled with wicked schemes and evidence of…wrongdoings” by Gerlach. The letter end up being helpful to Ferdinand in his schemes. It is also revealed that one of those mentioned in the letters, Veronica, was the mother of Ferdinand and his brother Sylvester, and charged with forging official documents and acting as an accomplice to Bezewanst. Apart from Myne later looking at the existing printing press and bringing together different tradespeople (a carpenter and smither) to create an improved printing press in this episode, with Myne buying the blueprint, among other plot points, Fran says her conduct as a noble is fine, “as long as it doesn’t involve books.” Then there’s a short scene of her laughing while reading a book, with Ferdinand saying it is best to keep her away from books (not good!). In the post-credits scene, one of the priests says he told Myne a story, to get over her drowsiness: the size of the collection, the types of books, names and ages of the librarians, and sealed archives at the Royal Academy. While the priest thought this was boring, Myne comes onto the scene saying the information was entertaining and useful. The ending credit illustration by Somchira Katsu has Myne smiling happily as she grabs one of the books in the church library.

I was reminded of Love Live! songs this month and came across, again, a song by Shioriko, entitled “Emotion” behind a library backdrop in  an episode of Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club, which I wrote about back in August 2024. In that post I said:

Let me start with Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club, a series which ran from 2020 to 2022. In the episode “The Memory of Dreams,” of aforementioned idol music series, a library is featured. At the end of the episode, Shioriko sings a musical ballad which features her going through a library, touching the spines of books, and walking down stairs in the library. This might be indicating how academic she is, as a person. She also, during the song, changes outfits in the library and finds a key… within a book. The song isn’t about libraries at all as a translation of the lyrics makes abundantly clear.

I wrote this just as the translation of “Hannelore’s Fifth Year” volume two started appearing in J-Novel Club pre-pubs. To the best of my ability, this story doesn’t break the canon of “Ascension of a Bookworm” and volume one of “Hannelore’s Fifth Year.” Volume two will most likely render this AU, though. However, I like the idea of Rozemyne and Hannelore eventually living together. They both need a good friend.

“Oh, my,” said Sieglinde, Hannelore’s mother. It would have taken a more observant man than Aub Werdekraf to notice the slight pallor that crept into his wife’s cheeks. But it was there, a sure sign that something highly unusual and alarming had happened. Fortunately, no servants were in the private dining room where the two were having dinner to observe her alarm.

“Is that Hannelore’s letter?” he asked as she handed it to him. He blinked as he read it, glanced up at his wife, and then continued reading.

Putting it down, he said, “How could Ferdinand have let this happen? A magical shumil?”

“Not just any shumil, it's a minor artifact. Only Ferdinand and Rozemyne could have made this one.”

“But what could it mean?” Wedekraf’s voice was muffled by the hands he had placed over his face.

His wife gave it some thought. She was the steadying hand that kept the Dunkelfelger ruling family in line. “Ah, I think I see.—Have you noticed that Rozemyne is inordinately fond of Hannelore?”

“One could hardly miss it. Do you think that’s all it is—an extravagant gift?”

“Do be sensible. Given Ferdinand’s involvement, it must mean something—something that can’t be spoken of directly.”

“But what?”

“What if Rozemyne is in love with Hannalore? If Ferdinand were to take Hana as a second wife, she would have an unassailable place where she could be with Rozemyne.”

The Aub took his hands away from his face, revealing brows scrunched in concentration. “That does sound like the kind of devious plan Ferdinand would come up with, but Rozemyne? I thought she had eyes #solely for Ferdinand.”

His wife was smiling now as she tapped her finger on the table. “It’s the #perfect solution to our Hannelore problem. She gets a good marriage with people who will ensure her comfort, and we strengthen our relationship with Alexandria and Rozemyne.”

Ferdinand emerged from the laboratory and approached his reading wife. “Do you know where the Shumil tool went? I had some ideas about how to cut down on the mana cost.”

The book slowly lowered, and Rozemyne looked up at him. “I sent it with Lady Sorrona to give to Hannelore.”

Ferdinand’s eyebrows twitched. “You did what!?”

Rozemyne set aside her book. “Oh dear, am I going to get another lecture?” Her tone was resigned.

Taking a breath, Sorrona began. “Ferdinand told me to be brief, since you must be busy, so I’ll be direct. Rozemyne requests that you accept me onto the Library Committee. I have already received Mestionora’s blessing, and I fervently hope to serve her and become a librarian someday.”

Hannelore hadn’t planned on reviving the Library Committee. The library had plenty of staff, and she had no interest in the work. As the highest-ranking Dunkelfelger at the school, she had enough to do.

Looking into her junior’s pleading eyes made saying no hard. She sighed to herself. It wouldn’t do to decide until she had consulted with Cordula, her head maid, and her mother. “I’ll need to check.”

The girl nodded, seeming satisfied. She beckoned to her maid, who stepped forward with a chest richly decorated with carved shumil. Cordula stepped forward, opened the chest, nodded, and handed it to Hannelore. Inside was a fluffy shumil plushie dressed in blue librarian robes. Its forepaws were outstretched.

Sorrona explained, “If you feed it mana while petting it, you can give it a book to read to you. Ferdinand and Rozemyne worked very hard on it.”

Hannelore’s eyes grew wide. Her mind screamed, “Too much! Why!”

She caught Cordula’s eye, who nodded imperceptibly and made a sign indicating their time was up.

Hannelore grabbed the lifeline. “I see it’s time for me to leave. I have another pressing appointment. May Dregarnuhr bind our threads again soon. Until then, may Schutzaria keep you company.”

As soon as Sorrona said goodbye, Hannelore fled.

“And may Verdraeos be with me, for I surely need his help.” Her whimper went unheard by anyone except the god himself.

As the tea ended, each girl rose and curtsied first to Hannelore, the representative of the highest-ranking duchy, and then to Sorrona, their host. The girl from Blumenfeld was first. The lovely dove-gray silk of her dress matched her eyes, which smiled insincerely at Hannelore. However, there was nothing lovely about how they bore into Sorrona. Then, with a silken rustle, she was gone.

Hannelore wondered if Sorrona was aware of the tension her favoritism had produced. She would need to report to her mother about the rising tensions between Blumenfeld and Alexandria. It would be unpleasant if they got caught in the middle. Many of Dunkelfelger’s lords were still loyal to the former king, who now ruled Blumenfeld, especially the older lords whose #lands were in the countryside.

As the last girl left, Sorrona sighed and began to slouch until she noticed her lady's maid’s #grim look.

“I hope it wasn’t too much trouble asking you to stay, Lady Hannelore. Aub Rozemyne speaks fondly of you, and she sends Mestionora’s blessings and hopes that Dregarnuhr will soon bind your threads with hers.”

“It was no trouble. I, too, hope that Dregarnuhr’s loom will soon bring us together,” Hannelore replied, wondering why Sorrona had wanted a private interview with her. Her worries grew when Sorrona took an anti-eavesdropping tool from her maid and said, “Shall we?”

“Most certainly,” Hannelore replied. She took out a similar tool.

As was customary, Sorrona took the first swallow of matcha. Then, she passed the cups around.

Everyone took a sip of the emerald-green #liquid. The lady from Klassenberg made a slightly wry face but quickly hid it. What was her name? Hannelore wondered. "Valeriane Tochter Klassenberg. That was it."

"This is lovely china, so unique," Valeriane said. Hanna thought it was perhaps an attempt to cover up her faux pas. "May I buy a set for my tea parties?" Valeriane went on.

“No, I’m sorry,” Sorrona answered. "They won't be available until after the Archduke Conference, but you can have the setting in front of you as a gift. You'll find Aub Rozemyne’s personal seal on the bottom.”

"Now, on to the treats," she said, sampling a sandwich and each confection to demonstrate that they weren't poisoned. "This is matcha milli feuille," she said, cutting into the lavish cake. She stumbled slightly over the name and giggled nervously.

"Everyone calls these tanieh jellies," she said, picking up the deep tan confections. "And these are mochi," she said, eating one of the round confections. "Rozemyne is very proud of the mochi. She said that they were incredibly difficult to develop.”

Finished, she turned to Hannelore. "You might be wondering why Her Grace entrusted me with debuting her creations. I was surprised, too, but when she asked who wanted to join the library committee, I was the only one to volunteer. She said you were my senpai, and that I should listen to you."

Sorrona giggled after making this serious announcement.

Hannelore stared as a feeling of déjà vu washed over her.

When Sorrona held up her little finger, it seemed to Hannelore that the girl wanted to shake pinkies. Flustered and unsure what to do, Hannelore complied, wrapping her pinky around Sorrona’s.

Sorrona giggled again and said, "Book buddies forever."

Such obvious favoritism clearly showed that Alexandria had singled out Dunkelfelger for special favor. Either that or they were signaling a marriage offer was in the making. Perhapes, Ferdinand was looking for a second wife. One wrong move and they would feel snubbed, and she would make an enemy of them.

Hannelore could feel the other women’s eyes burning through her. They would immediately share this intelligence with their duchies. Until she heard back from Dunkelfelger's Aub, her every move would be watched and interpreted. It was a nightmare.

She carefully #folded hands, making sure her smile didn’t waver. It was a far cry from her thoughts."What has my bad timing gotten me into this time?"

Hannalore was shown to a seat next to Sorrona. Each place setting was stunning. Handleless cups and plates with a jade-green glaze gleamed, which pooled in darker lines made by pattern of swimming #fish. What caught her eye most, though, was the fine web of cracks running through the glaze. They were lovely and unlike anything she had seen before.

In the table’s center was a silver three-tiered stand. The bottom contained a cake made of many thin, crepe layers with whipped cream sandwiched between each, and all dusted with green powder. It gave off a faint odor of tea. On the next tier were dainty crustless sandwiches, and on the top tier were tanieh jellies and soft, round confections covered with roasted samaneh seeds.

The mingled sweet scents made her mouth water. To think she would be among the first to taste Rozemyne’s newest creations. It felt like a miraculous honor. For once, just once, her timing had been perfect.

“I thought I would start our tea with a ritual that Rozemyne introduced to our court,” Sorrona said as the last guest was seated. “If you pass me your cups, I’ll make a special tea for you. You may decline, in which case you’ll be served a nice black blend. Either is exquisite, but the former is an adventure.”

As everyone passed their cups to Sorrona, Hannalore overheard the girl from Drewanchel say in a stage whisper, "Well, at least we don't have to worry about her fainting and leaving us hostless." Hannalore felt sorry for Sorrona again.

The target of the girl’s retort gave no sign of having heard and continued. "This is the finest tea, which is then ground into a fine powder. Rozemyne calls it matcha. You warm the cup with a bit of hot water, add this much matcha, add hot water, and whisk it. The temperature of the water is very important. If it is too hot, the tea will be bitter."

Sorrona picked up a small whisk and rolled it between her palms, turning the tea into a thick, emerald froth.

"Rozemyne says that any lady or gentleman should be able to do this for their guests. It is the highest honor. Having servants do it implies that you feel your guests are unworthy of your attention."

Some of the ladies looked shocked, but Hannalore thought, "I bet Ferdinand was the #architect of that custom to accommodate his eccentric wife." But it also seemed like a charming custom.

“Do you think Wilfred will be there?” Hannalore asked Cordula for the third time.

Her attendant resisted the urge to roll her eyes. "It seems unlikely. It would be awkward, given what has occurred, but you'll find out soon enough.—But we are here; so please don’t #overlook your manners."

The room selected for the tea was small, decorated in the latest Alexandrian fashion, complete with elegant bookshelves and tasteful ornaments. Anyone daring to take out a book would have found that it was fake. Even the Alexandrian court, influenced by their new aub, couldn't afford to display this many books in a mere academy meeting room.

Hannalore chuckled. Knowing Rozemyne, the books would soon be real. She then blushed, embarrassed to have laughed out loud at such an inopportune moment. Her unfortunate timing had already played a trick on her.

Lady Sorrona rose as Hannalore entered. She was short for her age, with a face unfashionably sun-darkened. Yet she had a cute smile, and her clothes were in the best taste, liberally decorated with tiny lace flowers in the Ehrenfest fashion.

"Lady Hannalore, once again, Dregarnuhr, the Goddess of Time, has woven our threads together and blessed us with a meeting," Sorrona greeted her. Her voice quavered, and Hannalore felt sympathy for her. She, too, felt nervous when hosting others. It must be much worse for Sorrona, a first-year, hosting such important individuals. The duty must have fallen to her because the ranks of Alexandria's nobles had been severely thinned by the recent war and by Ferdinand's removal of others he deemed untrustworthy. The man was truly ruthless.

Still, surely they could have found someone more experienced. There were other Alexandrian students at the Royal Academy.

Hannalore curtsied and smiled reassuringly at the young woman. "I am honored by your invitation and have been looking forward to the event."

“I hope you can stay afterward and talk,” Sorrona said. “Aub Rozemyne gave me a special message for you."

The guest who had arrived early stirred. Such overt favoritism was unthinkable unless it were a deliberate snub. Poor Sorrona didn’t look sophisticated enough to have mastered that noble art yet.

"Poor girl," Hannalore thought. "She's already made a faux pas."

"Dregarnuhr has kindly bound our threads extra long." Hannalore bowed while taking in who else was there: Ehrenfest, of course; Blumenfeld; and Klassenberg. Behind her, she could hear Drewanchel arriving. The fact that such high-ranking duchies had come to a first-year's tea—a duchy inferior to most of them—spoke to the influence of Alexandria's archduchess.

The invitation was something only Rozemyne and her close allies could have made. It was an heirloom treasure, printed in fine script on the best paper. Hannalore had never seen anything like it before. Brilliant red, green, and exotic purple lines intertwined to spell out:

          “Alexandria invites you to high tea and sweets tasting.”

Lilac petals adorned the tear-resistant paper, accompanied by a sweet floral scent. There was nothing #modest about it. It screamed “trendsetter.”

Below, a time and date were printed along with First-Year Sorrona’s signature, written in slightly shaky letters. On the back was a personal note in Rozemyne’s flowing hand.

“My dear bookworm friend, I am sorry that I cannot attend, but please enjoy the latest sweets I have dreamed up. Also, please allot some extra time for a private event after the tea.”

The absence of her title, "Aub Alexandria," showed just how highly the Aub regarded Hannalore. When she used the term "friend," it wasn't mere flattery. That was a rare thing for a noble.

Even without the personalized note, the invitation caused quite a stir, and students hastily rearranged previously scheduled teas. Sorrona was only a mid-tier noble, from the fourth-rank Duchy of Alexandra—not someone who was due such deference. But with Rozemyne obviously behind the event, missing it was unthinkable. She was famous for starting new trends, and experiencing her newest invention—high tea—or tasting her latest treats was not to be missed.

Barcodes, library slips, bookworms, and book deliveries in “Whisper of the Heart”

When I watched Whisper of the Heart, a romantic drama anime film which came out over 29 years ago (on July 15, 1995), on Max, I never expected that libraries, and librarians would be such a central part of the film! I was aware that the film was listed on Jennifer Snoek-Brown’s list of “Foreign-Language Films” on Reel Librarians. The latter list notes films reportedly with librarians and/or archivists alphabetically by title”. She warns that she can’t confirm that “every film on this list actually includes a librarian and/or archivist” as her primary focus is on examining English-language films. While that is a laudable goal, I don’t limit myself in that way, personally, and happily cover anime on this blog time and again. In fact, I have written about over 70 anime series, four films, and various manga, with my first post in August 2020. [1] This review will focus on the role of libraries, and librarians like the protagonist’s father, in the story, while relating it to other fictional examples and real-life library concepts.

One of the first conversations in the film is between the 14-year-old protagonist Shizuku Tsukishima, living in the Tokyo suburb of Tama New Town, who learns the local library is going to the bar code system, and her father. She tells him that she likes the library slips instead. He actually agrees with her, but decides to go with the library’s change anyhow. Thanks to the library slip, she learns that one man’s name is in common on all the books she has checked out: Seiji Amasawa. This piques her interest. This major plot point is mentioned in many summaries and reviews of the film, noting that Seiji is on every single one of these checkout slips and how she is slowly drawn to him as the film goes forward, with their feelings growing. Shizuku is also drawn toward these books because she loves fantasy books, and meets Seiji at an old antique shop somewhere in town. Other reviewers have noted that the checkout cards are an interesting narrative device, which “lends itself well to romantic daydreaming.” It is worth noting that Shizuku is spending his summer vacation, last one she has at Mukaihara Junior High School, translating and reading “popular foreign music into Japanese” like John Denver’s Country Road. [2]

At one point, Shizuku checks a book out of the library, which was never checked out before, and even though she somewhat ends up disturbing the job of the librarian (or the teacher standing in as a librarian), she comes across Seiji. Then, not longer after, he is curiously reading the book she checked out and she takes it from him, surprised to see him. And he even knows her name from the book. So much for reader’s privacy! Although some may see a sense of relief and kinship at seeing these library check-out cards, looking at these cards would run afoul of existing ethics, as outlined by the ALA. Those ethics state that libraries will “protect each library user’s right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted.”

Such cards are sometimes known as borrowing cards. They had/have an equivalent inside the library: a circulation card. Such cards may include the name of who borrowed the book and name of the book. There are also slips/cards which remain in a book only listing the date a book is due to be returned, known as date due slips. I’m not sure why I haven’t gone into this much detail on this before, but better late than never. In the case of this film, it would be a borrowing card, rather than a date due slip, which was stuck in the back of book, and then the book would be shelved, a way to record who borrowed a book before computer systems supplanted this system. Paper can still be used in today’s libraries, even to write down call numbers for books. The latter has also been shown in the films Dangerous Minds and Regarding Henry.

I am reminded of a scene in All the President’s Men, in which Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein go to the Library of Congress, and a Black male librarian gives them the slips for who checked out certain books, as opposed to an interaction with a White female librarian. I described this all in a post on this very blog in February of last year:

…In the classic 1976 political thriller, All the President’s Men, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein travel to the Library of Congress after their research seems to be stalled and having a librarian have a strange conversation with one them. They go to one librarian, who declares that the records they want are confidential, and that he can’t fulfill their request of library card checkout slips since July 1971. The other, the image of which is shown above, fulfills their request. Voiced by Jaye Stewart, he tells them “I’m not sure you want ’em, but I’ve got ’em.” Woodward and Bernstein proceed to go through perhaps thousands of check-out slips in the Reading Room of the Library of Congress. Unfortunately, the work is for naught, as it doesn’t confirm if a White House staffer checked out books on Ted Kennedy…Snoek-Brown…[said] hat it is not ethical to “give out checkout slips or records without a court order” as librarians have an “obligation to protect the privacy rights of our patrons.” I agree with Snoek-Brown entirely on that point

Coming back to the film, I would think that such borrowing cards would weaken the commitment of the library to reader confidentiality.  As it presently stands, almost every U.S. state has laws “protecting the confidentiality of library records”. The Japan Library Association in a statement published in 1980, states that librarians should respect the privacy of each library user, and should not “divulge his/her name or details of books or other library materials used to third parties”. A more recent statement notes library privacy and confidentiality, among other virtues, as important. This film came out before the economic downturn in Japan, in 1997, which unfortunately lead to privatization of libraries through “outsourcing of staff to reduce costs and provide a flexible workforce”, with privacy of user information is at stake because private management companies are “not obligated to protect users’ privacy and routinely gather their data”. [3]

Moving on from that, and back to the film, Shizuku soon follows a cat to an antique shop and is drawn to a cat statue named Baron Humbert von Gikkingen, with the shop’s owner, Nishi, telling her about him. She barely makes it to the library in time, is annoyed by Seiji, and is embarrassed in the process, as he delivers “her” lunch for her, with the fat cat (she had followed to the shop) riding on the back of the bike. The lunch is actually for her dad, who works in the library! This library is a fictional place created for the film itself, as no such library exists at that location (Irohazaka Sakura Park). [4]

This fantastical nature of the library is not unique. However, this library is more akin to something that exists in reality, rather than in a magical realm by itself. This makes the series unique. Surely, there are public libraries akin to those in real-life in Josee the Tiger and the Fish or I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, to give two examples, apart from the many within school buildings that I’ve often written about. This library is clearly a place of knowledge, but it is not a place or refuge. Rather, it is a place of learning and development.

As the movie goes on, Shizuku learns who donated a book at the library:  the father of Seiji. She is later called a “bookworm”, which she accepts happily. After all, she often goes to the library, a fantasy reportedly depicted in The Cat Returns, a 2002 film. She takes out books in the public library, so she can learn more for her story. At one point, she remains one of the last people there, writing away, and Seiji visits her in the library, while she writes her story. As a writer, she becomes more than a bookworm, and Seiji is more than a novice violin maker. Both characters are not exceptional, but have proven that they have what it takes to ensure their work can become “exceptional”, with their romance blossoming by the film’s end, even without a kiss. [5]

There is much more to this film than what I’ve noted so far and ending the article here would be selling it short, to say the least. For Shizuku to be called a bookworm as an insult, and turning it into a positive, is not limited to this film. There is an entire series entitled Ascendance of a Bookworm, which focuses on Myne and her quest to provide free books to the populace, building her previous life as a college librarian. In his quest, she even becomes a church librarian with some magical powers. The series has even been cited as an example of when an outsider from another world “usher systematic change in their adopted one.” The term was even alluded to in the series Bibliophile Princess, as a bibliophile, someone who frequently reads or collects books, and loves books, is also known as a bookworm. Bibliophile appears more “positive.”

Otherwise, there was a British comic from 1978-1985 entitled Bookworm about a young boy who always has a book and his parents tell him to do more “boyish” things, but it results in disaster. There’s also an 1850 painting entitled The Bookworm by Carl Spitzweg. A variation of this piece was even named The Librarian! Pu Songling published a romantic short story, in about 1740, entitled The Bookworm, while there are characters known as bookworms in Tiny Toon Adventures and most infamously in the campy 1960s Batman series. There are many other bookworms in fiction, like in Wonder Man (1945), Navy Blues (1937), and even Wong in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to an extent.

There is also the Association internationale de bibliophilie, which is called International Association of Bibliophiles or AIB in English. It is dedicated to bibliophiles. Russia has its National Union of Bibliophiles (formed in 2010), while there are is a book club in Detroit, a former group for female bibliophiles (Hroswitha Club), and the Oxford University Society of Bibliophiles. There is even a 15-minute film, which I haven’t seen, entitled The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, about a man who is writing his memoir, but is blown off a balcony, writing out of a library,and even becomes a librarian with the city suffering from impact of a storm. There’s also books such as The Great Book-Collectors about book-collecting practices of the British Library, Bodleian Library, and Ashmolean Museum, along with a physical archive named Library of the Printed Web dedicated to “web-to-print artists’ books, zines and other printout matter.”

All of this is related to the concept of tsundoku, which means acquiring reading materials but letting them pile up in your home without actually reading them. It can refer to books ready for reading later, as well, when those books are on a bookshelf. It is related to what A. Edward Newton wrote about in 1921, and stands in opposition to the term antilibrary. The latter, coined by Lebanese-American author Nassim Nicholas Taleb means a “collection of unread books”, which make people curious and humble. [6] He further stated that the older someone gets, the more they know, the larger is their “accumulation of unread books” and those who focus on such unread books are antischolars, i.e. those who do not “care about how much you know, but how much you don’t know” and how to find information you need.

When it comes to libraries, I would think people would side more with idea of antilibrary than the idea of tsundoku, as the latter seems to imply that having unread books is “bad.” Having books you haven’t read should not be seen as a negative. It is inevitable there will be books you haven’t read in your lifetime, no matter what. And libraries hold the books so they can be read by others, and shared, to spread knowledge, and understanding. This doesn’t mean that every book is right, immutable, or correct. Rather, the books can help you understand more about the world, at their best, and at their worst, promote misinformation. The latter can be prevented with careful weeding to ensure that patrons have the best information available.

As I’ve noted on this blog various times, libraries serve many important functions in society. One of those is providing a place to study. This is shown clearly, as indicated in the above screenshot. You don’t have to be a bibliophile/bookworm for that. In fact, not all bookworms are librarians, and not all librarians are bookworms. Some are, but due to the many tasks during the work-day, often librarians don’t have time to read a book on the job, as some people might think.

When it comes to Japan, I’ve noted this before on here, but there are over 3,000 public libraries in this island nation, and remain an important part of the country’s society. In fact, there is even an entire Wikipedia page listing them, entitled “List of libraries in Japan” (not to be confused with the page “List of archives in Japan“). Some probably still have card catalogs. These libraries, known as toshokan in Japanese, are centered by the National Diet Library. The only series, I know, to date to directly feature this library is 26-episode early 2000s R.O.D. the TV anime series, which features characters from the Read or Die light novels, manga, and OVA, and the Read or Dream manga.

Academics have noted that information commons/learning commons which provide various materials, facilities, and services, in one place, originally appearing in North America, has also appeared in Japanese universities and college. Such spaces are reportedly in an ” the early stage of development”, and there is a need for such spaces to rebuild their own services because of student needs. Furthermore, many libraries in pre-modern Japan were arguably private and have been called bunko, meaning “storehouses of books.” Currently, most have been subsumed into larger national, prefectural, university, or research library institutions. Some have even covered this in books such as Youth-Serving Libraries in Japan, Russia, and the United States.

It is also said that Japanese academic libraries are well-resourced and support the country’s research capacity, while reflecting the country’s “strong bureaucratic culture.” I’m not sure if this is also the case for the country’s public libraries as well, to be perfectly honest. I can say, with certainty, that libraries are an important part of the country, especially considering that the Imperial Library (forerunner to the National Diet Library) was established in the latter 19th century, and in 1947, the National Library Act created Japan’s sole national library (National Diet Library). This was followed by the landmark 1950 Library Act. The law states, in part, that the country’s libraries are aimed to promoting “sound development…[and] the enhancement of the education and culture of the nation”. It goes onto say:

…libraries shall endeavor to accomplish…[collection of] nooks, archives, audio-visual materials and other necessary data and materials…with suitable attention paid to the acquisition of local materials, art works, materials on local administration, gramophone records and films…library materials shall be properly classified and processed…efforts shall be made to ensure that library personnel acquire sufficient knowledge of library matters…close communication and cooperation shall be maintained by…inter-library loans between libraries…reading circles, seminars, appreciation groups, film showings and exhibits of data…shall be sponsored and encouraged…close contact and cooperation shall be maintained with schools, museums, community centers and research institutes, etc….professional personnel of libraries shall be called librarians and assistant librarians.

And that’s only part of Chapter 1! There is no comparison to this in U.S. law. The legislation, which passed the U.S. Congress in April 1800 (see page 56), only mentioned that the purchase of books “as may be necessary for the use of Congress at the said city of Washington, and for fitting up a suitable apartment for containing them and for placing them therein, the sum of five thousand dollars shall be…appropriated.” That same law went onto say that a library catalogue shall be furnished by a joint congressional committee, with books “placed in one suitable apartment in the capitol in the said city, for the use of both…houses of Congress and the members thereof”. That is it. It wasn’t until 1802 that a law defined the functions and role of this library, the Library of Congress (LOC), and even made the appointment of the Librarian of Congress a “presidential responsibility”! Still, this was nothing like the Library Law in Japan, which was much more extensive.

Such a law in the U.S, would be unthinkable, even at this current time, despite the fact it could have extreme value in ensuring the institution’s mission and objectives. On the other hand, LOC has broadly defined that on its own, and has a bit of autonomy, as it is only the de facto national library. This makes it different from the many across the world, coupled with any state-established libraries serving as preeminent information repositories for specific regions.

When I watched Whisper of the Heart on Max, with my mom and dad, I never expected libraries to be as big of a part of the film from the get-go. I am truly grateful that I came across this film, and would surely watch it again if I get a chance. That;s all for this post. Until next week! As always, comments are welcome.
