Hab das Buch entdeckt, als ich in 90ern nen Marburger Literaturprof, der Patient auf Orthopädie-Station war, nach seiner letzten richtig guten Lektüre gefragt habe. Und auf die Frage, was an »Posession« so doll ist, meinte er zuerst: »Die Sprache!«.

Hab damals die Übersetzung gelesen. Dann auch »Babel« auf Englisch (war mir damals aber noch a bissi zu hoch) und noch einige kürzere Texte (»Verliebte Dschinn«!).

I couldn’t help rummaging through my shelves for my A.S. Byatt books, including my most oft-read Byatt, my copy of Possession - all spine-cracked and scribbled over and signed as if I had once fancied myself a late-twentieth-century airport-hopping book-mad Qianlong.

Why it is so hard, after all, to part with one’s possessions, however yellowed and faded.

Finished Babel Tower by AS Byatt, the third of a quartet of novels charting the lives of the same characters through several decades. Now need to find a second hand paperback of A Whistling Woman for the sake of bookshelf completeness.
A larger, more formally ambitious book than the predecessors, you can tell that Possession came in between.
