Whenever Boeing repairs & sells N704AL (737 MAX9 from #AS1282 blowout), I suspect it could get an #avgeek nickname that spotters would recognize it by for years. It happened before. In 1983, a brand new Boeing 767 as Air Canada 143 ran out of fuel and was famously glided to a safe landing in Gimli MB. Damage from nose-wheel collapse was repaired. It flew for 25 years, known as the "Gimli Glider". What nickname might the AS1282 plane get? I'll curate best responses for a poll✅. #aviation #travel

  2. "Alaska Airlines to buy more than 100 Boeing jets in carrier’s biggest order ever" by CNBC / Leslie Josephs - #Alaska787 flew to Boeing Field #KBFI for a joint Alaska & Boeing announcement. Besides unveiling the new 787 livery this morning, Alaska ordered 105 737 MAX10s + 5 787-10s. CNBC asked Alaska Airlines CEO Minicucci what changed in 2 years since #AS1282. Boeing has regained trust. Alaska also has staff in the factory to verify. cnbc.com/2026/01/07/alaska-air #aviation #business #travel #avgeek

  3. "Alaska Airlines pilot says Boeing blamed him for door plug blowout" by @TheSeattleTimes - Brandon Fisher, captain of Alaska 1282 during the door blowout 2 years ago, filed a lawsuit in US federal court in Portland against Boeing for $10M for misstatements scapegoating the flight crew following the accident. Since then Boeing's statements have been used by lawyers as reason to name him in passenger lawsuits. seattletimes.com/business/boei #AS1282 #aviation #business #travel #avgeek

  4. 2 years ago, Jan 5, 2024: Alaska Airlines #AS1282 experienced an in-flight blowout of a door plug on climbout from Portland #KPDX. It returned safely to PDX. But the plane has so far never flown again. Alaska made Boeing buy it back, obviously being defective.

I got this picture this afternoon during a bicycle ride. N704AL is parked on the Boeing ramp by the paint hangar. Plastic sheeting still covers where the door plug has not been replaced. #aviation #business #travel #avgeek #history #TDIH

  5. Boeing seemed on the way to re-authorization for airworthiness certifications when the Jan 5, 2024 Alaska Airlines #AS1282 door blowout in Portland clamped down scrutiny on them again. This past Monday I realized an old photo I took in Oct 2023 was probably that same aircraft less than 2 weeks before delivery and another 9 weeks before the door blew out. It already had the flaw (missing bolts on the left-side door plug) when I took the photo. avgeek.social/@ikluft/11525030 #aviation #travel #avgeek

  6. Interesting. Looking for something else, I realized I may have a "before" photo of the Alaska Airlines #AS1282 accident plane at the Renton #KRNT factory before its first flight, painting and delivery. 9 weeks after delivery it experienced the door blowout on departure from Portland #KPDX on January 5, 2024. The plane returned safely to PDX. I took this picture Oct 18, 2023, which fits the timeline for the plane's delivery to Alaska on Oct 31. #aviation #travel #avgeek #PNW

  7. "One year later: Teacher ‘Bob’ recounts finding Alaska Air door plug in his backyard" by KOIN6 CBS Portland - At first he didn't check his backyard in detail because the news said everyone was looking for the #Boeing #737Max door plug. But when it wasn't found for a couple days, he checked. He immediately knew what it was when he spotted it hidden from view in a tree. koin.com/news/portland/one-yea #AS1282 #aviation #travel #avgeek #PNW

  8. Besides the #AS1282 #737Max door blowout a year ago, today is also one year that I've lived in Portland. If I had somehow known to go look, I could have seen from home the plane safely return to PDX. But I was busy, unaware until I saw the news later that evening. #aviation #avgeek #KPDX #PNW

"Boeing outlines safety and quality changes put in place since door plug failure incident" by KGW8 NBC Portland / KING5 NBC Seattle - Alaska Airlines 1282 #737Max door blowout over #Portland #Oregon was one year ago today. #Boeing outlined progress in that time. 13. It has already been 6 months (yesterday) since Alaska Airlines 1282 blew out a door over Portland on January 5, 2024. Odd coincidence: the 737 MAX door fell on the ground near the Portland MAX light rail Sunset station. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska_A #AS1282 #737Max #aviation #travel

  14. "FBI letter tells Alaska Airlines passengers they are 'a possible victim of a crime'" by @NPR - US🇺🇸 DOJ/FBI investigation into possible crime committed by Boeing leading up to #AS1282 door blowout probably isn't routine. npr.org/2024/03/22/1240167313/ #aviation #travel #avgeek

  15. "NTSB: Boeing hasn’t produced records on Alaska Airlines midair blowout" by @seattletimes / @dominicgates - Apparently insufficient effort to write docs: time for Boeing to document its door plug replacement procedure. seattletimes.com/business/boei #AS1282 #aviation #travel #avgeek

  18. It puzzles me how 737 Max9 door plug lasted until Jan 5 without bolts.🤯 That door was at risk of blowing out since 1st flight Oct 15, delivery Oct 31, entry into service Nov 11. ref @aircurrent / @jonostrower article: theaircurrent.com/aviation-saf #AS1282 #aviation #travel #avgeek

  22. @ErrolNZ @JetTip There hasn't been an official conclusion from NTSB yet. But the #AS1282 incident intuitively cast doubt on the installation process of the 737 Max door plugs. (Now also the identical ones on 737-900ER.) If you let your imagination run away with "all processes must be reviewed", very quickly there wouldn't be resources to do all that. We started with one data point about the door plugs, plus what inspections find. Nobody wants that to happen again. So that's why it gets priority.

  23. "FAA recommends door plug inspections on another Boeing model after midair Alaska blowout" by @NBCNews - Older Boeing 737-900ER has same door plugs as Max9. Alaska was already inspecting out of "an abundance of caution". nbcnews.com/news/us-news/faa-r #AS1282 #aviation #travel #avgeek

  24. "'Cozy' relationship between Boeing and the US draws scrutiny amid 737 Max 9 mess" by @NPR - FAA likely to deal with aircraft inspection workloads beyond its budget via 3rd party organizations instead of delegating to trained/certified employees at manufacturers. npr.org/2024/01/19/1225466035/ #AS1282 #Boeing #aviation #business #avgeek

  25. My concerns were valid about #AS1282 debris falling on Portland metro area. Based on this article in The @Oregonian, I plotted the general area on a map where the door plug was found in residential backyard. Cell phones fell nearby. oregonlive.com/portland/2024/0 #aviation #travel #avgeek
