  26. @ChrisMayLA6 The last Conservative Chancellor to really understand and advocate for the creative sector was Osborne, who was a more traditional (if extreme) economic Tory, rather than a high priest of the culture wars, who was paradoxically responsible for the deepest cuts (because the Arts are always the first to under austerity economics). The current government is of course a deviation from core Conservative values as well from rationality and that deviation is a cultural one towards an authoritarianism which is inherently intolerant of the artistic critique (note the recent Arts Council attempts to stifle political discourse). I spent ten years at the sharp end of trying to navigate growing mistrust and defunding of the arts and humanities under earlier varying administrations but the current nadir is unprecedented… and although I’m also deeply critical of pure instrumentalism I can’t expect any government to really understand value rationality!

Also worth remembering that the link between arts education and the creative economy is not so much poorly understood as wilfully ignored. It was ever thus, but the dying days of the current government are indeed extreme.

The Osborne paradox is beautifully captured here: amp.theguardian.com/commentisf
