New Color Study of PG50 Cobalt Teal/Cobalt Turquoise went life today.
I show swatches, mixes and a monochromatic painting to see how the pigment behaves during painting. This usually shows all its properties better and... is fun for me. :D -

Just finished an article on PG7 Phthalo Green in watercolors with a monochromatic painting, swatches and mixes as always. Also some insights on toxicity etc.
I built the database with the idea to get to know the paints we use on a daily basis better. These studies help me to get to know the pigments I use for sure and I hope it helps you to get more insights as well.

In a recent stream I was asked how to do dry brushing properly... because you don't need to use only dry paint to do it and it's actually very easy.
Dry brushing is a great way to add texture to your painting for wood, sand, water and even fur!

Last (for now) color to look into during the little color study series is Atoll Blue by Schmincke. It's a new limited edition release from this year and a mix of 2 pigments.
And honestly... it was surprisingly nice to use for me.

Why pigments matter you might ask. Especially in watercolor pigments have character. They can be transparent or opaque, staining, easy to lift, granulating or smooth.
The properties are often independent of the brand and knowing them opens a whole world of conscious decisions you can make during painting.Painting will not be about managing those properties, but enjoying them and choosing the ones you need for the effect you want.
So join in the nerdiness. :)

I found a cool website while looking for art references. The tutorial convinced me to start figure drawing. After a couple of daily practice sessions I'm getting better at understanding the shape and form of human bodies. hope others find this site useful and maybe convince some others to try drawing.
