  1. Released today 31 years ago:

    🇬🇧 Scott Walker "Tilt" – 1995

A radical and uncompromising reinvention that abandoned conventional songwriting in favor of abstract structure, dissonance, and psychological intensity. Scott touches themes of history, violence, memory, and existential unease...

    Favourite: "Farmer in the City".

  2. 🇬🇧 Brian Eno "Drums Between the Bells" – 2011

A text-driven work built around the poetry of Rick Holland. The album merges spoken word with shifting electronic backdrops, ambient textures, rhythmic fragments, and subtle melodic motifs that ebb and flow around the voice where tone, cadence, and atmosphere carry equal weight.
A meeting point between literature and sound design.

  3. New #review today: "My last encounter with #JohnGreaves, aside from the recent #HenryNow album, was Life Size back in 2018. Chanson d'Automne carries on from there with fifteen tracks that approach songwriting more in the tradition of chamber music than pop, rock, or folk." #ExposeOnline #ArtMusic #HenryCow expose.org/index.php/articles/

  8. highly recommend this YIVO talk which took place today with Berlin-based music historian Jascha Nemtsov, one of the few people researching, performing and publishing about Jewish art music in the late Russian empire and interwar Germany, Austria and Mandatory Palestine. I learned a lot and want to read his book someday

  9. I registered for this talk .. Jascha Nemtsov is one of the only people writing in English about the fascinating history of Jewish art music in the interwar years. Shall have to read his new book at some point too from @harrassowitzverlag

  10. I was thinking about her recently because my choir director said he wanted to make Gorovets' setting of Itsik Fefer's "Ikh bin a Yid" the focus of our final concert next year. It made me think of trying to set this piece for choir, a setting of a Peretz Markish poem by Shmul Senderei for Lifshitz: "Gist-zhe on." Rather mundanely translated as "Pour Out" here.

  13. I just happened to think about it after not accessing it for a while. In 2020 I went through a phase of trying to learn material from it, although I'm not at a level to play most of it. This one was one of my faves, arrangements of Jewish (and other) folk melodies into simple modern pieces. no.8, based on a nigun, is so mysterious, no.11 is actually a Crimean Tatar melody that was popular among klezmers, and no.13 is a nice arrangement of Kol Nidre.

  14. For musicians who are interested in both art music and Jewish music, check out this online archive of old scores connected with the St. Petersburg Society for Jewish Folk Music (Общество еврейской народной музыки, which only existed c.1908-19). It contains scores by Engel, Gnessin, Stutschewsky, Saminsky, and others of that late imperial clique who sought to incorporate Jewish musical themes into modern art music. Great and rare stuff!

  15. 40 days and 40 nights of uninterrupted streams! For the last 40 days, I've got at least one stream (from a visitor; streams from people who own it are counted separate) at my Bandcamp site.

I know for even moderately popular artists, that's a meaningless achievement, but for a completely independent, self-funded, one-man operation, working in such an esoteric musical vein, it's a big deal. Thank you all so much!

  17. Had a possibly fun idea for an art exercise!

This is a track called Rising Winds by Mid-Air Machine, from the album At Arm's Length - freemusicarchive.org/music/Ask
    Distributed as Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Take a long canvas, start at one end, and draw/paint your interpretation of the music as the track progresses. It's a 2m40s track so it's a quick-ish exercise. Don't think about it too much, just paint what you feel.

Tag with #ArtMusic then everyone can compare what they did :D
