  2. Tinto Brass's later films such as The Voyeur (1994) are very sexy but they're also often very arty, goodnatured and amusing. The Voyeur is a provocative intelligent erotic art film about voyeurism but also about secrets, lies and fantasies.

  7. You'll either love Pasolini's Medea (1969) or hate it. A bold attempt to transport the viewer into a totally alien society in which Medea's shocking actions make perfect sense. Visually amazing. Maria Callas is extraordinary.

  8. Roger Vadim's Love on a Pillow (1962) is a psycho-sexual melodrama starring Brigitte Bardot. It deals with freedom versus responsibility, free love versus marriage.

This is Bardot in a more serious complex role (moving away from her early romantic comedies) and she's superb. Great movie.

  10. Jacques Deray's La Piscine (The Swimming Pool) is a languid 1969 romance with added crime and more than a dash of 60s decadence.

Spoilt rich people unaware of their own motivations, playing dangerous games.

A superb cast including Alain Delon, Romy Schneider and Jane Birkin.

    Great movie.

  11. Venus in Furs (AKA Paroxismus) from 1969 is one of Jess Franco’s most satisfying films. It’s a dream-like hallucinogenic movie that plays havoc with reality and illusion.

Franco was a jazz aficionado and was interested in the idea of structuring movies like jazz improvisations.

Stars James Darren and Maria Rohm. Superb movie.

  12. Trans-Europ-Express (1966), a movie by Alain Robbe-Grillet called Trans-Europ-Express about a writer-director played by Alain Robbe-Grillet planning a movie called Trans-Europ-Express. Yes, it’s all very postmodern.

It's a wonderfully playful and enticing mixture of thriller, fun and artiness (yes such a combination was possible in those happier days).

  16. Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris (1972) has been described as the Soviet answer to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Both were intelligent thoughtful high-concept sci-fi films dealing with big philosophical issues. Both dealt with humanity’s encounter not just with alien intelligences but with alien intelligences beyond our understanding.

Avoid the goddawful 2002 Hollywood remake.

  17. Alain Robbe-Grillet’s 1983 film La Belle Captive was inspired by the works of the great surrealist painter René Magritte. From the very first we know we’re in surrealist territory.

Everything about the movie is consciously artificial. Which leads us to wonder if any of it is real, or perhaps to wonder what reality even means.

    Visually stunning, erotic and witty.
