Watercolor No. 475, Harry Mintz

Harry Mintz was born in Poland, graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1927. After a fellowship in Brazil, he immigrated to the US in 1934. He lost his mother, father and sisters in the holocaust. After the war he searched for surviving members of his extended family, advertising in European newspapers and looking through thousands of telephone book pages. In 1987, he gathered the surviving members of the Mintz family for a reunion in Chicago.

His artwork grew more abstract as his career progressed … “While I have the strongest connection with reality, I do not copy nature verbatim, but interpret it in the light of my own feelings about it."

I Live in a Ghost Town

French photographer Thibaut Derien traveled France in search of abandoned storefronts to creat his Ghost Town, capturing the silence of a time gone by.

“I was tired of the capital. Too much noise, too many people. And I couldn’t stand my neighbors anymore. I wanted a change of scenery, a change of life.”

Sculptor Bruno Walpoth was born in Italy surrounded by family artists. His life-size sculptures are created with chisel and file from blocks of wood - the same medium he grew up with.

“When I make my sculptures, I am not telling any stories. I am just trying to capture the moment. That moment—in which the model has vanished in his own thoughts and acts ‘absent’—is what interests me the most. It is this moment I am trying to implement. The melancholic mood comes from being alone.”
