Tonight I'm at Friday Night Market. I'll be selling my greeting cards and prints! Music, a Farmers Market, locally made food and craft artisans from all over the region!
https://www.fridaynight.market
Tomorrow I'll be at Block Party on F Street, which celebrates art and health. The block has a major regional art museum, a coop art gallery, two private studios, and a classic theatre for movies and music performance.
There'll be Plein Aire painters, fire dancers, an upbeat calypso band, an art and frame fire sale, awards for photography in the local coop, and overlapping Arts Alive! happening concurrently all over downtown! The museum will be free, the theatre is giving away free popcorn! There's a children's area as well as hard cider, and lots of local artists selling their artwork.

Today is a gorgeous day here in Eureka, CA, with the temperature at 60° and the sun bright. I’ll be downtown at Friday Night market tonight from 5:30-8:30pm, with four new greeting cards!
They’re my new Cooper’s Hawk, a Pileated Woodpecker, a Mallard Duck, and a Red-Legged Frog.
If you’re in the northern California area, I hope to see you there!

Tonight is the first Friday Night Market of the summer. I’ll be doing twelve consecutive Friday nights vending at a local street fair here in Eureka, CA, selling my greeting cards and prints.
Last year was my first experience doing so at all. I’d never put art out there like I did that first time. And it was life-changing.
Tonight, I go to have fun and enjoy the music, food, crafts, and people I meet. Tonight is about joy, not sales.
Because in today’s world, artists have to link themselves to their art in a way that can’t be so easily obliterated into irrelevance like generative slop does. Slop depends on the commoditization of creativity, separating the artist out of the process entirely in favor of a finished product.
And Art can’t be that way anymore. We cannot be anonymous introverts working hard to share things simply to to be posted to an endless scroll of imagery for the entertainment of bored people looking for distraction in the moment.
Artists can’t hide anymore. To sell their art, they must make human connections. They must engage in their communities and find ways to say, “Yes, I actually made this. This is how and why.”
So tonight is going to be about positivity, home, creativity, and fun. And meeting people to enjoy them as much as I relish making art.

They did an article on me as the featured artist for Friday Night Market in my local newspaper. Here’s a gift link:
It’s a nicely written piece, and it introduces me to the community in a way that is really authentic, and fits into the aesthetic of local-first.
Between this and the poster I made for the event, I’m pretty stoked today! I guess they’ll be selling it as a limited edition print at their info booth, which is honestly a great way for them to raise money—the Humboldt Made organization has been awesome to me, personally, so I’m happy to give back somehow.

I did my first event where I did not make back the fee I paid to be a vendor.
Neither did a lot of the other vendors, and those who did only just covered it.
I’ve never seen so many frustrated vendors. I made eight sales. The last 2.5 hours of the first night there were more sellers than attendees.
Many of the vendors started packing up early. None of the ones I talked to will be doing events put on by that manager in the future.
Lesson learned. There were signs. But I trusted. And now I think I need to be a bit more selective.
But there were still several good things that came from it:
1) I got several people to subscribe to my mailing list.
2) I got a list of new suggested things to draw.
3) I met a bunch of fellow vendors I probably wouldn’t have met otherwise if we had less time to sit around and chat.
4) I now have a bunch of stock I don’t need to prep for the next show I do.
Next up is the beginning of Friday NIght Market on Friday, May 22! Woohoo! I *know* this will be a much better experience. Last year was awesome, and I’m looking forward to meeting more new friends!

Another blur of bodies, unknown stories, unresolved paths. One seems clipped, shorn in two - but is perhaps emerging from behind an object. A hand melds with a face, shoulder and arm shrink into each other.

Oof. Seriously, deeply wiped out after my first three-day holiday vending event. Sold out of several item repeatedly, which meant I had some short nights staying up to reprint more stock, and the space itself wasn’t heated well so we were constantly chilled the entire time… It was an interesting endeavor, but monetarily it was worth it.
I am sore, exhausted, and ready for a deep sleep. I’m gonna defer unloading the car until tomorrow.
Time for pain medication, cider, and some vegetation time.

Tomorrow is the Humboldt Artisans Craft and Music Festival here in Eureka, CA in northern California.
I’m a vendor this time, and I’ve never done it before. I’m nervous. It’s three days long, and I’m hoping I have enough stock. I’m lucky in that I can print things each night here in my own studio if I run out a particular item, but it’s still going to be a long weekend.
Should be cool—they turn off the lights, so it’s all wintery and fun. All the vendors have to have their own lighting. And there’s holiday music in each of the three buildings, so It’ll be nice. My building apparently has electrical and heating issues, so I’m a tad concerned about that, but I use my own battery, so I should be okay.
I’ll be selling some new holiday greeting cards along with all my other stuff, as well as my new 2026 Bird Calendar, so I’ll have seasonal stuff that’s appropriate.
Wish me luck!

Met two of my chums from the bookshop for a walk around the artist's fair at Edinburgh Printmakers & a stroll around the gallery.
Followed with hot chocolate on a cold day in the lovely cafe there as we chatted & compared purchases. I bought this cute, tiny ceramic Selkie (which I thought looked a little Studio Ghibli-esque).
Perfect Sunday...

So. Much. Preparation. To. Complete!
Tonight after my livestream and then my weekly family Zoom-meetup with my younger sisters, I'll hop on my overlock machine.
I’m making little scrunchy tubes I’ll be putting on exposed tent pipes for an upcoming indoor craft fair. I wouldn’t normally need to do this, but I’ve been assigned an 8x10 space instead of the normal 10x10, and we aren’t allowed to use canopies. So that means a lot of exposed ugly pipes… <sigh>
Ah, the artist life. 😜
if any of you are in Humboldt County in northern California this weekend, come check us out! I’ll be booth number 89 in the Vickers Building!!!

Today was the last outdoor event I’ll be doing for the year. After this, it’s all indoor events until the weather gets better next year.
And wow was this one tough.
I’m not sure I’ll be doing this on in the future. It was weird from the beginning with no online application process, checks-only for application fees, and a lack of communication of acceptance and logistics until literally days before the event…
One vendor left halfway through setting up once she learned there were only two portable toilets for the entire five-block event.
But the day *really* soured around noon when 30+mph wind gusts started knocking over vendor displays. Many left early.
And I didn’t make a single sale for the last 2.5 hours. I was fortunate—my tent weights are massive. But I still had to hold it down most of the afternoon. None of our stuff went flying across the street like other vendors had to deal with.
It was a tough day. My body aches. I think I will sleep very hard tonight.
