When writing captions in a block for multiple images on one page (or a spread) of a publication, is there a standard ordering if a numbering system isn't used?

For example, if a bank of captions are located under one of the images, should that one always be the first caption, with the 'Above' directional?

Should others then follow in some logical order below that, e.g. Top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right? Or perhaps clockwise from top left?
