I am seeking a texture/sculpting/modeling paste or compound for my low-relief artwork, akin to this piece of inspirational artwork seen here in post by Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh in 1906.
It needs to be a brand available in the US. It needs to have these qualities:
• Water soluble
• Sand-able
• Matte
• Mixed and thinned with water to varying degrees of thickness
• Should not dry with plastic appearance
• White, with capacity to be mixed with color
• Multiple day workability/storage capacityI am essentially looking for something like traditional gesso, or Plaster of Paris that has a long-term workability. Most large art brands have acrylic versions that dry with an unmistakable plastic artificial quality. I don't want gels or full-body paints. They are too lightweight, and can't be thickened to have the qualities I need.
I need something I can mix with water to behave as a clay when needed, scrape like Cold Wax with a putty knife, hold shape like Butter Cream icing, and self-level like Royal icing when diluted into a slurry.
Recipes for making one's own texture paste dry and cure too fast. I don't know what to add to extend the workability when stored.
I've tried varying amounts of ingredients for recipes combining plaster, joint compound, white glue, acrylic medium retardants, and paints. Workability is often mere hours, with no storage capacity.
Anything out there I don't know about?

I’m very critical of my art.
I put a lot of effort into my illustrations, but each time I finish a piece I can’t help but clearly see all the flaws: The anatomy is wrong, the subject not interesting enough, those details distracting, or I’ve been lazy in some other aspect. There is always something I see that can be improved!
But to me, it’s not so much of an issue, nor something that takes away my joy of making art.
It took me some time to learn it, but setting high personal standards doesn’t mean beating yourself up.
What’s damaging (and often counterproductive) is not recognizing that our art could improve, but the story we tell ourselves around this.
“My art is bad, therefore I’m a bad artist”
“I’ve been bad for so long, therefore I cannot improve”
“I’m a bad artist, art is my life, therefore I’m a bad person”
“Others could have done it better”
These judgments we tell ourselves are not logical, and have truly nothing to do with the art itself.
I sometimes still get those thoughts. I’ve been drawing for more than a decade, but I’ve started to be happy with my work only 2 years ago - and yet, my standards keep rising. Each time I progress to a new level in composition, colors, details, I see that I can do better.
Here are the things that helped me cope with this:
1) Recognizing that art - or any skill - is an infinite game
Finite games have clear rules and win conditions. The goal of a finite game is to win.
Infinite games have loose rules and no win conditions. The goal of an infinite game is to keep the game going.
Improving at art is an infinite game.
Instead of stressing over how long you’ve been practicing a skill and how good you should be by this point, recognize that there is no final destination. There is no end state to your skill where you will be so good that there will be nothing left to learn.
By recognizing it, you can embrace the journey instead of stressing out about the outcome in front of you. You’re not here to be the best, nor to be enough.
Once you are committed to play the game, keeping it going is the only goal.
2) Seeking the truth without lying to yourself
Being delusional about one’s skill is a self-lie, but being overly harsh is just as wrong.
The judgments I talked about earlier are a leap we are doing without basis. Being a beginner or struggling after years of practice doesn’t change your value as a person.
Facing the truth is a very scary thing to do, that’s why we like to interpret and judge. But doing this is the only way to either:
- improve (you cannot become better by facing away from what you’re lacking) or
- make peace with your reality (You can touch people with flawed art. And there is no need to worry if it’s just for yourself).
My art will never meet my standards. I will keep improving, and my standards will increase accordingly. Recognizing this allowed me to not only improve, but also enjoy and be proud of my work - however flawed.
And if you can’t help but tell yourself stories, realize that you are in power to choose how the story goes.

Whats funny about #ArtAdvice to not draw with the wrist and mainly with elbow/shoulder is funny because thats pretty much why I never got carpal tunnel and got cubital tunnel instead (elbow based tendonitis)

I originally wrote all this in a series of sporadic discord messages to a friend who was concerned about whether to hashtag his art in the first place. I used to do a lot of independent sleuthing and research on my own for years trying to figure out the best ways to build my audience. Judging by how sometimes people get amazed at how many other people I know, maybe there is some weight to my words? Heh, but humblebrag aside I am extroverted to begin with.
Don't sweat it everyone. Theres always luck involved too. Dont delete your stuff. Repost if you wanna. who cares! In my personal opinion, microblogging social media platforms were meant to be snapshots of the present and are hard to keep "clean" while still cultivating an engaged audience unless you're already established. But at the end of the day, I'm still just some guy and you canb take or leave whatever I say with no issue. Go for what makes things click for you and dont be afraid to experiment. Ciao.

Even with all this in mind, it's easy to feel as though hashtagging is still overwhelming because of everything you have to look up. However, if you consistently draw or post things with overlapping themes, the process for tagging new posts can become easier as you get a more assembly line approach to it. When I tag my art posts, my thought process is tagging for my Constants,. basic Variants, and Key, Traits.
Constants would be what is always consistent for my character I'm posting for and my organization. #BeebzArt #TristeMiedo #catboy #OC.
Variants are what I use for what I think would be the most commonly searched objective truth about the drawing #furry #fursona #anthro #kemono.
Traits are pretty much anything else that I think would be the appealing thing someone would look for that would be appreciated in my work for one reason or another. In my opinion, its good practice to evaluate your posts and define the objective aspects of it. As an Example this could be Gender, Species, Kink, Theme, but those categories can be whatever you want. (It is at least good to CW and/or hashtag kinks or themes people may like to avoid, because even though your post would be filtered, not only does it not get you flack from someone who didn't wanna see it, you intrigue people who ARE interested to have a look)
If you had fanart from a show with 2 characters in a ship you like, the objective truths about the art you can tag for would be Name of the show, character names, ship name, or even what AU the picture is! Its your blog you can use hashtags to find your posts again too!
For organization sake I try to put the categories of my hashtag all together in order so I'd have something like Numbers, Alphabet, Double Digits It'd be like #1 #2 #3 #a #b #c #10 #25 #42 This is completely optional and order does not matter for visibility, its just something i like to do to keep organized

To figure out which tags you want to use, it can be a combination of trying to puzzle out the correct format of the tag or using other people's posts to hop between the relevant ones. For example, if you are tagging fanart for a show with spaces in it, what is more often used? Would it be #The_Show or #TheShow? Same goes for characters. Is it #Character_Name , #CharacterName or #TheShowCharacterName
What I usually do is check my first instincts of a tag and evaluate the frequency of them so I can make my own judgements of which I'd like to use for my own blog archives and visibility. From there, I'll see if the posts in that tag have adjacent posts, as other people often will do what we said in the last post. Use different hashtags for the same concept. Especially in cases of fandom work, this is an easy way to gather intel on what the community is using the most.

The effectiveness of Hashtags can usually be broken down into how often people post to them. High frequency tags will have more posts with less time in between the dates of the posts while lower frequency tags will typically have less posts with more time between each post. Middle frequency obviously are somewhere in-between, sometimes fluctuating even.
There's a tradeoff when it comes to posting with a high or low frequency hashtag. If you post with a high one, you'll have a larger audience to see your work, but a potential downside is if it is really active it could be bumped down quickly. If you post to a low used tag, you'll remain in the forefront for longer, but not as many people may use the tag when they search. In my opinion, the best way to split the difference is use the tags you personally like for the same thing, but of various frequencies. E.g. #Water #Agua #H2O

There's a lot of things to consider when it comes to putting hashtags on your art, but it can often be overwhelming. Sometimes people might feel discouraged from using them because of bigger social medias purposefully placing posts with hashtags lower in the ever mysterious algorithm despite these sites having created the use cases of it in the first place.
Luckily, on the fediverse (or at least mastodon in my experience) there is no almighty algo to punch your posts dead in the water because you dared to try to become seen. So the first advice I have at all is, if you want a higher chance of getting more followers, engagement and even potential clients, is use hashtags! Try to ease yourself out of the hesitation and utilize these tools for the purposes they were meant for in the first place.

I'm ordering my first set of charms with pawprint merch, and the communication is a *delight*. They're super nice and patient (I get panicy when I don't get ALL the print specifics, I guess work-disease hahaha).
They're also based in the EU and not really more expensive than chinese companies like vograce, which is important to me. I already know the quality of their products from friends. So highly recommended. -

I will be in a friend’s salon, Kia, the Curl Consultant and Tiziri roasters coffee will be here too.
I have my table ready, I have some cash, I need to print my cash app, Venmo etc and find enveloppes in the morning to put the stickers, magnets and prints in.

*inquisitive fox noises* could I ask for some art advice? I've been playing with more opacity in my line art, I really like the subtle effects of seeing lines overlap. The pawblem is it creates ghosting with fills that are partially behind the line.
I've been wracking my dumb little animal brain trying to mitigate this with masking, normalizing opacity.. no luck.
But I know it's possible because I see artists doing it. How are you doing it?

Does anyone have tips for getting started with painting? I’ve worked with paint in the past and really like it, especially oil and acrylic, but I never learned how to work with color and often ended up with it just getting muddy. (I know color theory, it’s more an issue of mixing/layering correctly) Would love to learn more about under painting, etc, and to see any resources you might suggest!

I had a client ask about using animation to fit some additional speech bubbles into an image, so I had to have the painful conversation about how difficult it is to do gif encoding without artifacts and how most furry galleries don't really have good controls for gif-like animations using something sensible like mp4.

Had a profound case of imposter syndrome on stream today; someone came in and asked me for advice for getting started in comics... as I was drawing a panel from page 8 of my own very first comic. :artsweats: I have no clue what I'm doing, just making it up as I go.
I ended up regurgitating the best piece of advice I heard at #thoughtbubble last year: "Just do it."
And so do it I did.

Artists: Do not use 'Friends and Family' when conducting commissions AT ALL. There are ZERO protections for chargebacks, Paypal will give you no customer assistance, & you'll lose your account. Freelancers abusing the lack of fees it originally had is why it has fees now.

Reminder that tracing is an extremely valuable tool to utilize for art! It can help you vastly improve your skills and give you a good jump start into understanding difficult subjects. 💪
I traced less than 30 images (1-4 times each) in between this before/after, using a variety of different methods of tracing. (Loose, contour, detailed, blocking, etc.)
