Granted, "And I'm not a cab driver, I'm a coffee pot!" is a wonderful closing line. But man, that poor guy.
Oh right, and also it was back when the cops were variously named O'Hara, Brophy, and Rooney. And that probably wasn't even stereotyping so much as just basic verisimilitude.
The level of utter obliviousness in the cops in this thing is just staggering. First O'Hara, then the Lieutenant. They just keep missing things that are right in front of them.
Is Mortimer supposed to be hard of hearing or something? (Potentially undiagnosed?) He keeps asking people to speak up, and/or not hearing people.
Oof, didn't need the bit about Native Americans (hypothetically) scalping settlers. 😠 Even as a setup for a gag.
When Jonathan finally realizes that Aunts Abby and Martha have killed 12 people... wow, that seems like the first time he's actually flustered in this thing.
Big "Wait, you did *what*!?" energy.

Having the cabbie who's waiting for you flag down a *different* cab for you is a special kind of "OMG, I'm freaking out so much". 🤣
It's really unclear what Mortimer thinks committing *Teddy* will achieve, though. I mean, all he's doing is burying the bodies (and probably not understanding the significance of that, either).
It's Abby and Martha who need to be stopped. So far, everything's made sense (insofar as that goes), but this bit? It doesn't track.
Woah, that's a hell of a pratfall Grant does over a chair while he's chasing Gibbs out of the house. And it's absolutely him doing it, not a stuntman; there's no opportunity to swap him out while he's ranting at the old guy.
Cary Grant's freakouts and "oh shit!" reactions in this are making me wonder what a remake with Michael J. Fox would've been like. His reactions to things were one of the best parts of both the _Back to the Future_ trilogy and also Peter Jackson's sadly-overlooked horror action comedy, _The Frighteners_.
Lovely contrast in energies between Mortimer and his two aunts as he discovers the body in the window seat, and then discovers (slowly, with many "well of course" answers from the aunts) just how the body got there.
And then the aunts not wanting to go see a "scary movie". The cherry on top.
(Although I'm pretty sure there are not cemeteries still in Brooklyn Heights. And no houses that small, with that much land around them. So that part's kind of incorrect. But what the heck, I'll go with it anyway.)
1. They live in what the beat cops call the nicest neighborhood in Brooklyn
2. Their house has a cemetery right next door (or maybe is in it?), that dates back to 1654.
So at this point, I'm really thinking, "Brooklyn Heights".
3. Mortimer and Elaine are outdoors, and there's a *magnificent* view of Brooklyn Bridge. The kind you could only get from Brooklyn Heights.
Yeah. I'm calling it.

Wow, they just don't make "confirmed bachelors" like that anymore.
Mostly because half of them would now be assumed to be gay, and the other half have pretty much morphed into PUAs and Andrew Tate wannabes.

Followed up by a title card mentioning "across the river in the United States proper"... I can't tell if that's intended to be pro-Brooklyn or anti-Brooklyn. Feels maybe sort of like "jokingly anti-Brooklyn, having been written by a Brooklynite".
Oh shit, the opening title card says "This is a Halloween tale of Brooklyn" (adding "where anything can happen... and it usually does", heh)! I'd forgotten both of those bits (the Halloween and the Brooklyn).
Well, seeing as how it's literally less than a week before Halloween, and I'm in Brooklyn... how appropriate! 🎃😁

“Arsenic and Old Lace” tea recipe (DO NOT ACTUALLY MAKE)
• 13 ½ lb Elderberries (no stem)
• 3 lb Golden raisins
• 11 lb Sugar (made into simple syrup)
• 4 ½ tablespoons Citric acid
• 2 ¼ teaspoons Nutritional Yeast
• ¼ teaspoon Potassium Metabisulfite (or 4 Campden tablets)
• 1 pkg. Pasteur Champagne Yeast
• Water to make 1 gallon
• 1 teaspoon Arsenic
• ½ teapoons Strychnine
• 1 pinch Cyanide
