  1. If the Tories change the nature of policing such that police officers no longer consider themselves as having exactly the same powers as their fellow citizens then the trust placed in them by their fellow citizens will further diminish.

Arming the police is always a poor strategy and misplaces resources.

  2. Cousins & Carrick served with the armed parliamentary and diplomatic protection command. As a UK-US dual national, I go to the US Embassy on occasion to renew passports. The armed officers on British soil carry conspicuously. After Cousins, I went to renew my son's passport. I saw the men with guns, gritted teeth, thought OK, bad apple. Now I DO NOT WANT TO SEE THEM. One might have been careless. Two is culture. #MetPoliceUK #ArmedPolice

  3. Should all Gardaí be armed as the police forces in other countries are? When they were established DURING THE CIVIL WAR, Michael Staines, the first commissioner, said they would not be armed because: 'The Garda Síochána will succeed not by force of arms or numbers, but on their moral authority as servants of the people.' And they did. Think about the courage and wisdom of that decision in a time when armed rebels still controlled parts of the country.
