Especially after completing the big hikes in Namibia my thoughts are returning to doing the Arizona Trail NOBO. It is something I would like to do in the next couple of 2-4 years if possible.
But coming from a foreign country means there is additional planning involved for instance:
- Where does one store stuff which one does not take on the trail?
- How to manage one's clothes, especially for zero days?
- How easy is it to post packages forward?
- How to figure out what US foods would be appealing on a hike? (Peanut butter on a wrap will not work for me).
- Can I subscribe to FarOut just for the 2-3 months on trail?
- How does one get permits for the Grand Cayon section? And many more...

You know you're hiking on a rough and rocky trail when you see two horses with feet too sore for their owners to ride them.

There's a reason my trail name is Gravity. Day 30 of my #ArizonaTrail thru-hike proved that four more times.

No matter how many maps, trail guides, blogs, and YouTube videos you study, there's no way to know everything about a trail. There are bound to be a few surprises along the way.
Day 24 of my #ArizonaTrail thru-hike was filled with many.

$310 million #DHS grant to Fisher Sand & Gravel Co to build 27 miles of US #border fencing closes access "indefinitely" to southern most point of historic 800 mile #ArizonaTrail . Back in fall of 2025 DHS fenced off the trail’s southern terminus monument with razor wire.
30-foot-tall steel barrier now impedes access to stone obelisk monument at former pre-#DJT "end of the trail."

Leaving Pine, the #ArizonaTrail was more challenging. There were fewer forests to provide shade, so there were long stretches exposed to the sun. I crossed rugged terrain with steep inclines and many rocks.
As a bonus, there were many more cacti along the trail to rip at my clothing and skin.

Day 21 of my #ArizonaTrail thru-hike settled into what I had expected most days on the trail would be like. After several days of turmoil, it couldn't have come at a better time.

On Day 19 of my #ArizonaTrail thru-hike, I made a decision to quit and go home.
The next day, something remarkable happened. I met a hiker named Tree Hugger, the first hiker I’d talked to in days. She helped me see I’d made a rash decision, and I changed my mind about quitting.
Thru-hikers like to say, "The trail provides." Our chance meeting on that day was proof that indeed it does.

I felt at the end of Day 18 on the #ArizonaTrail like I had reached a crossroads. One road would keep me on the trail. The other would take me home. Standing there, I couldn’t decide which one to take.

23 years ago today, as U.S. was preparing to invade Iraq under GW Bush, a miserable disgrace, I caught a ride with a friend to Coronado's Monument at southern border of Arizona to commence hiking the fledgling #ArizonaTrail. Kicked off, way too much stuff in my pack, March 3, 2003, by hiking to the top of Miller Peak at over 9000 feet. And thus began my ~800 mile journey across Arizona to the Utah border. Still gives me chills recalling it. Tomorrow's the birthday of said chills.

End of today's activation at US-4557, with the JPC-12 antenna configured for 10 meters. The gate back to the main road is in the background. Thanks to all the hunters today! #POTA #ArizonaTrail #QRP #Xiegu #HamRadio

Water sources on the #ArizonaTrail are often a gross mess of silt and algae, usually shared with cattle and wildlife. It was a huge relief on Day 12 of my thru-hike to find water that was clear and tasted good. Better still, I was able to thank in person two trail angels who provided some of that water.

I knew pretty much nothing about Neotoma lepida, or at least an animal by that name. It is also called a desert woodrat, and more commonly, a pack rat. My only knowledge about it was that people who save junk are sometimes called pack rats.
Then on Day 11 of my #ArizonaTrail thru-hike, I discovered pack rats are real, and their name fits.

Day 10 of my #ArizonaTrail thru-hike turned out much better than Day 9. I didn’t feel nearly as tired, my pack ably handled the weight of five liters of water, and I even got a little education on what goes into a prescribed burn.
