Saturday night sipper.
Cadenhead's Ardnamurchan 5, Oloroso Cask. NC, NCF, 58.1% ABV.
Bags of red fruit and a touch of liquorice on the nose. Sweet, treacly mouth-coating, cinnamon, cloves, and orange peel. A slight savouriness.
Young, vibrant and delicious. 🥰

Advent Dram #23
Cadenhead's Ardnamurchan 5, NC, NCF, 58.1% ABV
Wonderful sweet cherries, strawberries, red currants, and a touch of earthy dunnage. Rich, thick, and mouth-coating, mulled wine with cinnamon, cloves, orange peel, and more dark fruit. Jammy with a slight savouriness. Despite its youth and high ABV, there is no alcohol burn. It is beautifully smooth and quaffable. The cask must have been really active, as the depth of flavour and complexity is astonishing.
This is a real beauty.

Friday night fitba returns 😀
Arbroath v Ayr in #scottishchampionship This should be a good game with newly promoted Arbroath taking on last year's championship hopefuls.
I've just finished watching a great Podcast with Ardnamurchan's Carl Crafts, so for the first dram of the weekend it can only be one thing:
AD 2014 CK233, unpeated, Concerto barley from Broomhall Farm, matured in ex-Oloroso, Spanish Oak, 53.4%. And thanks to Kelly and Holly for filling the bottle - I love the detailed information you get on a bottle of Ardnamurchan 😀
Loads of red fruit on the nose: strawberries, raspberries and a touch of black cherry. Pencil shavings. More juicy red fruit on the palate with sticky raisins, liquorice and black treacle, sweet, cinnamon-spiced apple finish.
Wonderful!

Alasdair Maclean’s NIGHT FALLS ON ARDNAMURCHAN (1984) was his only full-length prose work. Hilary Mantel called it
“…a book like an animated shipping forecast… You hear the ocean and the voice of a salt-laden gale in this sharp, thoughtful, eloquent memoir, which is specific yet not parochial, romantic, reflective, and yet grittily acquainted with the realities of life on the margin.”

After a few days sailing north of the Skye Bridge visiting Raasay, Portree and Plockton it was back around Ardnamurchan. We will be heading south for Northern Ireland later this week. We are now tied up at Salen Jetty, a beautiful wee marina on Loch Sunart. There's a small shop here which regularly has Ardnamurchan bottles for sale. It's the only shop on the winding, narrow coastal road from the distillery (about nine miles away). I was looking for their Paul Launois 2023 or Sherry Cask Release, unfortunately for me, they aren't expecting these until the end of the week. But they did have a Maclean's Nose...
Maclean's Nose Blended Whisky (Adelphi), 46% abv, NCF, NC, NAS
Subtle notes of smoke with zesty citrus and sea-salt. Creamy, oily mouthful with hints of the burnt skin on a rice pudding. Slight floral hints, toffee and vanilla - there seems to be a bit of everything in this. At under £30 it's an absolute belter.

A Free Church congregation in Strontian, Ardnamurchan, launched their floating church. The local laird refused them permission to build a church on his land, so they "crowdfunded" £1,400 to get a Clyde shipbuilder to make a floating church. The church was moored in Loch Sunart & was 80ft long & 24ft wide. It could hold a congregation of 400.
