What do WhistlePig Whiskey, Glenmorangie, and Ardbeg have in common?
Let me tell you.
As you may be aware, LVMH is the parent company of both Glenmorangie and Ardbeg. Back in 2020, LVMH also acquired a minority stake in WhistlePig. The two release from 'The Vault' I now possess are a result of that.
The two releases are:
The Boss Hog III - Bonfide
The Independent
Straight Rye Whiskey Aged 20 Years
Finished In Highland Single Malt Casks
52.7% ABVThe Boss Hog III - Bonfide
The Independent
Straight Rye Whiskey Aged 19 Years
Finished In Islay Single Malt Casks
53.2% ABVNo prizes for guessing the Highland and Islay casks.
I photographed them along with my bottle of the original Boss Hog III - The Independent. Mine was barrel 11, 14 years old, 60.1% ABV.
Basically they took some remaining spirit from The Independent bottling run and re-casked it for some extra aging. I have seen nothing about these releases out there to date.
I've been a fan of Whistlepig since Dave Pickerell brought the first releases to Julio's Liquors many moons ago. The original 10, the 111, Boss Hog I, etc. I still have those, and nearly everything Whistlepig has released to date. I'm a long time fan.
I say that because now I have to tell you that Whistlepig has botched this experience to the point of it being laughable.
My LVMH rep reached out to me about these releases in early November 2025 as they are limited, direct-sale bottles. I thought about it and decided to pull the trigger in December. Whistlepig finally confirmed the order January 15th, and said delivery could take up to 16 weeks.
Guys, I can get whiskey shipped from anywhere in the world faster than that. You're in VT, I'm in MA, give me the option and I'll drive up to get it.
But, fine, I'll wait.
OK, May rolls around with no word, so I ask my rep about them. He was as surprised as I was that I had not received them. He looks into it, and the order is still processing. Very strange.
He went back and forth with them and they were apologetic. May 28th I received a shipment from Whistlepig - a bottle of the 15 year Estate Oak and two Simon Pearce glasses to apologize for the delay.
Very nice, and I appreciate it, but I'd really just like the two bottles.
My rep had to keep chasing, and by mid-June he had to go all the way up to the Chief Marketing Officer to push things forward.
June 22nd the Highland finish arrived. Islay still a ghost.
July 31st the Islay Cask arrived.
Huzzah!
But it doesn't end there. The cases have a slot inside the cover for a Certificate of Authenticity. My Glenmorangie finish has one, but the Ardbeg finish is missing its certificate. My rep is chasing that down.
There is another issue. These are not inexpensive bottles, and the way they were packed left a lot to be desired. The outer shipping box was sized such that the cases had to be on their side when the outer box was upright. Anyone who ships whisky regularly knows you want the bottles to be upright as much as possible.
The Glenmorangie bottle wasn't too worse for the wear, but the Ardbeg bottle seems to have had a rougher trip. When I opened the case the bottle was askew, sitting diagonally, stopper down. The brace that holds the neck on the bottle had been wrenched free from it's position by whatever impact moved the bottle. Fortunately it doesn't appear to have leaked and I was able to push things back into position.
Whistlepig, I like your products, but if you're going to try to get into the luxury market like this you're going to need to improve the process. As a 'concierge' sale product, the experience has left a lot to be desired. My LVMH rep has been stellar throughout the whole thing, but there should have been no need to chase things for eight months, and counting for that certificate.
I'd love to see you succeed, so take this as constructive criticism, please.
I normally don't mention the cost of things, but apparently there are still bottles of these available if you really want one, and hopefully your experience will be smoother than mine.
The Glenmorangie finish was US$3,750 and the Ardbeg finish was US$3,500. They're direct sale so you might need contact with an LVMH rep.
I will be trying these soon, alongside the original.

It wasn't all Glenmorangie, there were also a few bottles from their sister distillery, Ardbeg
- I finally managed to land a Lord of the Isles. That's been a unicorn I was hunting for a while.
- Seann Chreag 21 year old
- Traigh Bhan TB/07 (seventh edition) - this was actually from Royal Mile Whiskies and not an auction
- Smoketrails Napa Valley Edition
- And a backup bottle of the famous lightly peated Blasda
-
The auction unpacking continued with Ardbeg.
The Anthology The Beithir's Tale 15 year, the third in the series.
The Traigh Bhan 19 year batch 6. Batch 7 has finally popped up in an auction, and I'm stalking it like a Pokemon.
And Homecoming, a rum-finished Ardbeg normally only available at the distillery or Ardbeg House.

I swung back into Julio's Liquors last week to pick up another couple of bottles they were holding for me.
The new Ardbeg Dolce is the latest annual Ardbeg Day special release. Finished in ex-Bourbon and Marsala dolce wine casks.
The Pinhook 10 year rye "Finish Line" is part of the ongoing Loch & Key Whisk(e)y Society vertical series. Each year a parcel of the same rye is bottled, just one year older than the last. The first release was aged 4 years and, despite the name, this isn't the end of the line yet.

Into the daylight. After years in the cool quiet darkness of the bonded warehouse, a cask of what has become Scotch whisky heads off for bottling at Ardbeg Distillery on the Isle of Islay. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/islay/ardbegdistillery/index.html

A wee dram of Arrrrrrrdbeg! after dinner. #potentpotables #ardbeg #islay #Photography

I'm not really a 'peat head', but I do enjoy peat at times. And my preference tends to be the 'sweet peat' of Ardbeg.
I picked up the 23 year old Vintage Y2K 'blue' edition, the 25 year old, and the 19 year Traigh Bhan 04 (still looking for 07) - and the new Cask Strength 10, which came from Julio's Liquors

Today's tour was Ardbeg. #potentpotables #ardbeg #islay #Photography

This is the big ticket item that came in last week, the new Drammers Club 19 year Ardbeg Single Cask #5459. Aged entirely in an ex-Oloroso Sherry Butt.
We took it along on a weekend trip with a couple of friends to Blue - Inn on the Beach on Plum Island this past weekend. It was a perfect dram for sitting by the windows, looking out across the snowy beach at the ocean, and just relaxing.

#Islay is the home to my favorite Whiskies. #Lagavulin tops my list, but #Laphroaig and #Ardbeg are also fantastic! Just across the little bay from Lagavulin is the ruins of Dunyvaig Castle.

I recently had several months worth of auction lots shipped, and last night I finally had time to open them. It has, unfortunately, been a crazy couple of months.
This is the first batch.
First up are five Ardbeg bottlings - the original 17 year (not the recent re-release), Traigh Bhan release 02, the Twenty One, Twenty Something 22yr, and Twenty Something 23yr.
A run of nice Single Grain bottlings from Clan Denny - 1997 20yr Invergordon, 1998 25yr Cambus, 1974 35yr North of Scotland, 1975 36yr Cambus, 1965 45yr Dumbarton, 1965 45yr Girvan, 1965 45yr Caledonian, and 1963 48yr Cambus.
And a 2006 bottling of Compass Box Hedonism. That's one I was missing from the lineup.

CW: Alkohol
Heute dann "Frau Kolle" vom @kollemate
Recent pickups from Julio's Liquors.
First up, Ardbeg Smokiverse, this year's Fèis Ìle release. This just came in for those who had pre-ordered it, as I had, and will be generally available soon for Ardbeg Day.
Next up, Pinhook 9 year Straight Rye Whiskey "The Home Stretch. This is part of the Loch & Key Whisk(e)y Society vertical series which sees a new release each year, each one year older than the last. I've been collecting these since it started and I'm planning to wait for it to end, then do a gathering to side-by-side all of them. It will end when it ends - basically whenever another year starts to be too much.
Then Bully Boy Distillers Straight Bourbon Whiskey "Wickeder Dahk". Another Loch & Key bottling, this is obviously a follow up to the earlier "Wicked Dahk" bottle. (If you're wondering about the spelling, think Boston accent.)
And finally, Alma del Jaguar Tequila Nocturne. We tried their range at a recent Whisk(e)y Wednesday at Julio's Liquors - the standard Blanco, Reposado, and Anejo, and this one. Their standard line ferments 20% with champagne yeast and 80% with wild yeast, and they were all very good. But Nocturne is 100% wild yeast and I thought it was the best of the lot, and very affordable, so I grabbed one.

There was still more that arrived.
More Glenmorangie - Speakeasy bottle Cask 6813, three The Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottlings: 125.4, 125.15, & 125.37, and then three sample bottles - Finealta, Signet, and the 18 year Extremely Rare.
There were also two from Ardbeg - 19 year Traigh Bahn #1 & #3.
I already had #4 - #2 is still in the UK with another auction house and #5 is with a friend in CT as it couldn't be shipped to MA. #6 I'm still on the hunt for. I've been picking these up at auction for well below MSRP.

Ardbeg Traigh Bhan 5th edition. I'd initially passed these up, but they've been coming up at auction for pretty low low bids, so I've recently picked up all five. This is just the first to arrive.
And, just to avoid another post, Maker's Mark Cellar Aged 2024.
-
I picked up a few bottles from Julio's Liquors recently. The Russell's Reserve Loch & Key Whisk(e)y Society "Buddha-ful" 9-year straight bourbon, celebrating Julio's 50th year. The WhistlePig Whiskey Snout-to-Tail 10-year bourbon. Ardbeg Eureka! Committee Release. Maker's Mark Loch & Key "Second Curtain", the last of that stave combination. And Black Tot Rum 2021 Master Blender's Reserve Rum. I was missing this one (I have 22-24) and was pleasantly surprised to find Julio's still had it.
Go Whiskey Week is coming up fast. Tickets to events are selling out, so jump on those.
