In the headily optimistic days of the 1990s, when liberal democratic governance and the free movement of goods and peoples seemed to be the fate of all the world, the term “Arctic Exceptionalism” emerged. The North, it was proclaimed, was indeed a zone of peace, setting an example for all the world to follow.
Within a few years it all came tumbling down.

"The Russian attack on Ukraine has had major consequences thousands of miles from the battlefields. Since Russia launched its invasion in 2022, the state that contains around half of the total landmass above the Arctic Circle has been effectively excluded from the field of transnational Arctic cooperation.

Regardless of the merits of temporarily cutting Russia off, it is the Arctic’s indigenous peoples — with longer histories in the region than the states within whose borders they now find themselves — who have suffered most from the decision and from the broader Arctic fallout of the conflict.

During that time, they have been recruited for war, seen connections across state borders severed, and suffered from a “pause” of the Arctic Council, an international forum where they had fought for representation."

Nothing new if you follow Rahmstorf. But I'd like to point out this bit: " Some colleagues say we shouldn’t talk about extreme possibilities like an Amoc collapse because it sounds alarmist and might distract people from more certain impacts of global heating "
because it is reminiscent of the outrageous NYTimes event 4 weeks ago where David Wallace-Wells had Rahmstorf on stage with Michael Oppenheimer.
Oppenheimer is an anti-alarmist. And acc to his Wiki article, he shaped the US interface between politics and science since the acid rain issue. Interface = read "filter".

So he is a major reason why the US has not done anything in the past 30 years. And due to huge influence on multi-state bodies like OECD, G7, IMF, World Bank, Oppenheimer is also co-responsible for their failure.

On stage, Oppenheimer said exactly that which Rahmstorf alludes to in the Guardian interview: "Let's not talk about AMOC at all. No politician can hang his hat on those uncertainties. Let's focus adaptation instead!"

Oppenheimer was not corrected by Wallace-Wells. Typical NYTImes failure.
But what do you suggest to adapt to, Oppenheimer? A warming world, a super-heating world, or one with a collapsed AMOC?
And do politicians "hang their hat on" nuclear plants or bridges being built with a 50% risk of a major catastrophe?

Arrogant, smug Dunning-Kruger ass. <shudders>

I feel, the interview in the Guardian is a direct response to that event.
But it isn't really. The interview is part of the news cycle of the letter from 44 Scientists to the governments of the #ArcticCouncil .

"The #InuitCircumpolarCouncil includes representatives in #Alaska, #Canada, #Greenland and #Russia. It is one of the six international #Indigenous organizations that have decision-making power at the eight-nation #ArcticCouncil. The Inuit Circumpolar Council has a COP 28 delegation, to include Alaska members.

"One key issue highlighted in the position paper is the Loss and Damage Fund that was created at last year’s COP 27 held in Egypt. As it is structured now, the fund is focused on helping poorer nations in the #GlobalSouth address the impacts of climate change.

"That leaves a big gap, said Inuit Circumpolar Chair #SaraOlsvig of Greenland.

"'This means that as it is structured now, Inuit and other Arctic #IndigenousPeoples will not have access to the fund, although we are among those most impacted by climate change,' Olsvig said by email. Given the rapid rate of Arctic warming and associated effects, 'the inclusion of Inuit in any policy and decision-making is of great importance,' she said."

After a few months of testing the waters here I will do a thumbnail intro.

I'm a former stage technician who went and got a masters in #geography with a focus on the #Arctic regarding martime use, search and rescue, policy, and regional relations like the #Arcticcouncil. Since then I'm a geography #adjunct at my local community college and would love to do something else.
