TIL about the Point Park Civic Center concept for Pittsburgh from 1947.
I have long batted around the idea of a cyberpunk / Shadowrun version of Pittsburgh, and if I ever really dug in and tried to build it out, I'd start from here. Dude wanted to basically bulldoze the whole dahntahn and stuff it into two big domes.

Hahaha okay the pipeline is crashing because one of the beta testers uploaded an 8GB hard drive image and Disk Image Manager tried to load the entire thing into RAM.
It has been [ 0 ] days since a bug was found in a third-party module. #arcology -

The thing I'm quickly learning about image classifier models is that most of the "detect explicit content" ones are pretty awful or use an insane amount of CPU power.
Also nobody names the folder containing their porn stash, "porn stash". More's the pity, I could just flag those folders and ignore them (or carve them from the image).

Playing with the image viewer UI in #arcology. Nothing says "1990s stock photo CD" like a ton of photos from the semiconductor and electronics industry.
Including, oddly enough, wafer probing jigs! -

Ah, the beautiful potential and cautionary tale of arcologies. I could flip through the images of Soleri for hours. Hello Future Me does a nice, bite-sized overview of the artist, architect and urban planner coined the term and refined the concept. More information in replies.

I miss #Arcology and #ShadowRunOrigins #ShadowRun #ActualPlay #podcasts, they haven't released anything in a while, and I really did enjoy listening to them.

Oh, neat! Now both #Arcology and #ShadowrunOrigins #podcast #ActualPlay have picked back up, more great #ShadowRun #TTRPG content to listen to :D

@Hey_Beth I’d like to see a #NewCity or #Arcology as an alternative to typical #Sprawl which often results in open spaces and prime ag lands near existing cities being destroyed. However, the first draft of this proposal didn’t look green enough and it would be better to put it on the #WestSide of the #SanJoaquinValley, where it could replace thousands of acres of almonds, use other land too alkaline to farm, and include new neighborhoods with decent housing and water for #farmworker families.

The Begich Towers in Whittier Alaska offer a glimpse into the possible future of Arcologies, where the needs of communities are met in densely populated, ecologically low impact structures. We’ve vacationed in Whittier and found it a welcoming community. https://bit.ly/Begich-Community #UrbanDensity #Arcology 🌍🌆🌱

Disappointed to read this >now< after visiting #Arles last month. Would love to have visited this project. Good reason to return to this amazing ancient city sitting on the Rhône.

Fascinating disciplines I did not suspect they exist:

CW: arcologyposting
I spent some time tonight getting #Arcology to run on the Wobserver. In https://engine.arcology.garden/poetry#20221128T194356.350889 I ship a NixOS with Arroyo NixOS metadata included. It took more work than I expected to get this to run on NixOS, mostly fiddly little things like PATH but the end result is a lot more simple and more idiomatic.
It's kind of close to the point where someone else could theoretically run this thing if they were so motivated, even if they can't run the whole Arroyo stack. Getting the Emacs package set up is the hardest part, i guess and making an Arroyo-Emacs boostrap will happen soon.

spent some time tonight trying to cut down on th e time it takes for my #arcology site engine to go from (file write on laptop)->(site content update on server), still a fair bit of work to do...
In https://cce.whatthefuck.computer/arroyo/db-cache#cb11 I add a function which caches the files' hashes and https://cce.whatthefuck.computer/arroyo/db-cache#cb4 which compares the stored hash to the hash on-disk. If they match it will skip processing the file. This is low-hanging fruit I have wanted to add for a while but was too lazy to deal with the schema migration crap.
It still takes ~3 minutes to update the database though? I need to profile this tomorrow or Monday.
I think I need to add a hash-check to this: https://engine.arcology.garden/arroyo#arcology/arroyo
I love programming like a fucking neanderthal goblin who learned jazz guitar since they were in high school but it's slow work.

For my #Nix + #NixOS rebuild of The Wobserver, my general-purpose linux "homeserver" hosted by the wonderful catgirls at @wobscale , I have gone with a full ZFS installation for both my main partition and my data pools. I wanted to keep them separate so that the OS is only running on the SSD and this week I made some updates to my automated installation script based on https://github.com/cleverca22/nix-tests' kexec/justdoit.nix.
With these changes, I was able to set up a mirrored raidz on 10TB of spinnies for /home, /media and service storage, and a root partition and /nix on the SSD. My plan is to build out The Wobserver at home, slowly setting up proxy_pass directives over #Tailscale to plumb services from the existing Fedora host to the Wobserver before taking these disks up to Seattle to install in the chassis that is hanging out in the datacenter. This will be the death-knell of my last Fedora Linux installation. 🫡
At this point, all of my systems will be dynamically managed by the #arroyo and #arcology systems which host the link at the top, which are developed in the code in the link on the top

X-Seed 4000: a concept structure over 2 miles tall and 3 miles wide, its interior environment combining nature and high-tech living for a million inhabitants. Can't help but feel it'd be totally awesome if we really built arcological stuff like this.
