Quick answer: yes!
Post-pandemic workplaces are less desk-based, have more collaborative spaces and are less densely packedThis has wide-ranging implications for workplace design and particularly challenges guidelines by the British Council for Offices who continue to suggest dense layouts based an desks

We also heard the latest thinking on new developments in workplaceDesign and place making - are offices now obsolete? How to make hybrid work? Why are some settings never used? How do third spaces interact with the city? How to spread research knowledge in practice?

Spatial layouts provide material conditions for all of those needs and constraints and shape not only pedagogy and how students learn but also how communities form, who meets who, how power asserts itself through surveillance and how people feel about their schooling

We learnt that school buildings differ not only by climate (warm countries have more courtyards and exterior spaces) but also by culture (gender separation in Saudi Arabia), size (from 100s to 1000s of students), schedules (all day needs canteens) and by pedagogy (high discipline context in Kazakhstan for example)

Last week, we discussed school buildings. Students made a sketch (from memory) of the secondary school they attended.
So many great examples from all over the world - from a small school in Chile boasting a slide from classrooms to playground all the way to a large Silicon Valley campus -

New publication by my friend and collaborator Prof Julie Zook and colleagues on hospital ward layouts, showing that a more visually open corridor layout supported higher levels of care team communication
Corridors don't just connect things - they are important spaces for knowledge work

New paper alert! @ChrystalaPsathiti and I argue in our paper in the Journal of Architecture published today that adolescents' positive perceptions of school depend (among other things) on the school layout and levels of visibility from the classroom, which enables a greater sense of belonging to the school community
