Just back from the 53rd CAA conference in Vienna! 🏛️ A packed week – I presented the KIŠIB project, co-organised an archaeogaming session with Aris Politopoulos (10 talks, consistently high quality!), and was impressed by new approaches to automatic cuneiform translation.
The organisation was excellent, and the ice breaker was hard to beat. New blog post with my full report:https://itsmoreofacomment.com/2026/04/10/caa-2026-in-vienna-a-conference-report/ -

The third Archaeogaming Hackathon has wrapped up in Kiel! 🎮⛏️ Four students came together at Kiel University's Institute for Pre- and Protohistory and built "Kieler Küstenfische" — a two-level RPG connecting a present-day coastal rescue excavation with the Mesolithic past. Brilliant work by a small but incredibly focused group. A full report is on the DiKopA project website. Until then, read my own blogpost about it:

Long time no see Mastodon! Back on here to advertise myself and Mike Cook are co-organising the first Games and Archaeological Play (GAP) Workshop at FDG! The aim of the workshop is to bring together a broad range of researchers and practitioners who are interested in archaeology and games, from interpretive mechanics, puzzle design, games and play preservation, to reception studies, code archaeology and field studies. Let's bridge the gap between archaeology, game studies and HCI.
Short papers due April 5th, zines due June 10th!

#500CharAbstracts: S. Hageneuer presents Archaeogaming as both a research field and a teaching approach. Video games depict the past in influential ways, and archaeologists can learn from them while also teaching students how to engage with games critically.

This chapter forms part of a larger volume on Digital Methods of Learning and Teaching in Archaeology, published in 2025: https://doi.org/10.11588/propylaeum.1572.

New article out! 🎉 "Archaeology and interdisciplinarity after the digital turn" just published in Rethinking History.
I explore how archaeology has always been interdisciplinary – and how RTI, machine learning & archaeogaming push this even further.
Spoiler: My students' game "The Schliemann Experience" made it in! 🎮

🕹️ Archaeogaming isn't all fun & games.
At #CAA2026 in Vienna, Aris Politopoulos & I are co-organizing a session on the promises and problems of play in archaeology.
⚖️ Topics: accessibility, ethics, inclusion, critical storytelling, AI tools, XR platforms & more. Whose past gets played? Who gets to play at all?

Just returned from #CAA2025 in Athens and finally had time to reflect on a packed week of digital archaeology, great discussions, and even better Greek coffee ☕🇬🇷
Curious about the conference, archaeogaming, or what’s next for the CAA? I wrote a short recap here: https://itsmoreofacomment.com/2025/05/16/caa-2025-in-athens/
