  1. The sickly transplanted arbutus tree is no longer sickly and may be on the verge of Menace status. 😂 Thankfully, we have supportive neighbours. That is their house it is reaching toward, not ours. 😂

  6. #ThickTrunkTuesday The arbutus or madrone (Arbutus menziesii) goes from a young bark chartreuse and smooth to deep brownish-red and peeling off.

Daniel Mosquin at the UBC Botanical Gardens says: "It has a seasonal deciduous period – July and August – when all of the previous year’s leaves fall. It just so happens that the current year’s leaves remain on the tree at this time – so it is both evergreen and deciduous."

  11. The camas are in full flower at the Camassia Natural Area, a small park owned by the Nature Conservancy in West Linn, OR. The trail loop is 3,000 ft over basalt and plank walkways over marshes. Tall oaks, madronas (shown here), and other trees provide cover for birds, and an osprey nests in a nearby tower.

Poison oak is abundant right along the path, so remember "leaves of three, let it be."

  16. How it started…

we found 4 little arbutus seedlings in a forest back in December 2020. We dug them up and brought them home, planting them in various places around the yard. This is the only one to survive! #home #gardening #arbutus #PacificMadrone #trees

  21. The arbutus is over 10ft tall I think! I think we can officially say that this transplanted baby has established itself
    and is thriving!

  26. On a long ago day, snow lingered on the coppery arbutus trees and the sky reinvented the colour blue.
