- TIUEs must fulfill a range of cybersecurity obligations
- TIUEs must ensure that SIM cards remain continuously linked to their services, they must make it impossible for their users to use services without a SIM
- For website or web-app-based access, TIUEs must ensure users are logged out periodically (not later than 6 hours) and must offer an option to relink accounts through a QR-code-based method

Crowdsourced product decision-making in the Indian tech space
During September-October 2025, Arattai [1] surged in popularity as a “made in India” alternative to WhatsApp. A major criticism that emerged on X was the lack of E2EE for text chats. Calls already had it. Users repeatedly tagged Sridhar Vembu [2] and Arattai demanding the feature.
During early November 2025 Sridhar Vembu posted a detailed thread on X showing screenshots of the upcoming E2EE interface and explicitly asked for user feedback on two implementation options as stated below.
Option 1: Make E2EE optional/user-controlled (with cloud backups possible for non-encrypted chats), or
Option 2: Make it mandatory and system-wide default (no non-encrypted option, cheaper for Zoho to run).
Sridhar shared screenshots, explained trade-offs (privacy vs convenience/storage), and invited replies. He received large number of responses. Many strongly preferred the stricter, mandatory version for maximum privacy. About 10 days later, Sridhar Vembu posted the decision to go with option 2 i.e. mandatory system-wide E2EE. He noted it required significant redesign and testing. Since then, Sridhar posted periodic updates about progress and answered user queries on X.
Finally E2EE for one-to-one chats went live yesterday (18th November 2025). Zoho posted detailed explanations, migration notes, and continued responding to dozens of user clarifications.
The transparency of Zoho with respect to end user inputs for E2EE was unusual for a commercial product Arattai. I am yet to see such an open and participatory process in India when adding a feature like end-to-end encryption (E2EE) to Arattai. Also such repeated engagement with end-users on X was impressive.

Most such apps are under-ambitious like this. They "only" wanted to be like Google: based in #India, yes, but still a walled garden. What we need is not more walled gardens but open protocols that break us out of walled gardens once and for all 🏃
I want to like #Arattai. It's even got a Tamil meaning and a cool multilingual logo! But without federation, it's useless to me. Just enable #XMPP already man!! :xmpp:
