💧 Aggressive groundwater and the long memory of contamination
Even after more than a decade of monitoring, the groundwater in this carbonate aquifer remains undersaturated with respect to calcite — consistently showing negative SI values across nearly all observation wells.
This means that the system is still chemically aggressive toward limestone, slowly dissolving the host rock.

🌎 Mapping dominant chemical speciation in a polluted carbonate aquifer
In my recent modeling work, I modeled the dominant forms of element speciation in groundwater within a carbonate system.
Beyond pure geochemical curiosity, this approach provides a practical lens:
– it reveals where mineral precipitation is most probable,

🔬 Metasomatic Zonation as a Model of Groundwater Contamination
One of the key theoretical bases in my research is the classical metasomatic zonation model (Korzhinskii, 1960s).
I interpret the contamination halo formed by mine waters not as passive dispersion — but as an active metasomatic system, where aggressive fluids drive alteration and re-precipitation reactions within the carbonate aquifer.
Highly mineralized mine waters create a complex interaction front.
Thermodynamic modeling (based on well-monitoring data) allows identification of several geochemical zones partly analogous to Korzhinskii’s metasomatic sequence.📊 The image shows my preliminary zoning concept.

Lyon mystery: I initially thought this was an outdoor oven for baking very long baguettes, but the passage extends far into the hill at a slight incline so I'm wondering whether it is a water catchment gallery. The area is apparently riddled with them, some serving to drain the soil and prevent mudslides and building collapses (like the one that killed 40 in 1930), others to provide water for domestic use or fountains. Some catchments are early Roman but I have no idea when this one was built. Kind of strange there was no sign for curious tourists. Maybe it's just totally obvious to residents. Caretaker Ivan Bender feels that the waterflow of the well that feeds Ha’Kamwe’ has already decreased due to the company’s drilling. There is a dispute between the company, the Tribe, and local ranchers regarding how shallow the water table is, with those who live in the area concerned that drilling could easily puncture the #aquifer.
"In the early 2000s a power plant was proposed in the area and though it was never built the Environmental Impact Statement for that project found 'the discharge from Cofer Hot Spring would be reduced, and possibly cease, as a result of groundwater withdrawal from the volcanic aquifer.'
"The #HulapaiTribe is concerned the proposed lithium exploration activity would deplete the spring as well.
"In April of 2021 the #Hualapai Tribe passed a resolution against the mine. 'The Hualapai Tribal Council strongly objects to any further permitting of surface or subsurface disturbances within the #SandyValley Lithium mining claim area, which will result in devastating impacts to significant cultural and spiritual resources; will threaten long-term tribal water rights and quality; will cause irreparable harm to the Tribe’s ability to continue cultural activities and to pursue economic development of Cholla Canyon Ranch, and will result in long term ecological destruction of a fragile desert environment, including plant and animal species with cultural significance. Further, should an open pit mine ever be permitted, it would create enormous public health issues caused by pollution, dust, noise, and overall safety concerns caused by having such a mine immediately adjacent to Hualapai land, as well as severe visual impacts.'

This would require a thorough examination of issues protected by the American Indian Religious Freedom Act.
