Grotta Rotolo, also known as the Donato Boscia Abyss, represents the extreme heart of Apulian karst and holds the absolute depth record for the region. Located in the Canale di Pirro within the territory of Monopoli, it is a subterranean system of immense exploratory and hydrogeological value.
The cave drops to a depth of -324 meters underground, making it the only one in Apulia to reach and directly intercept the deep water table. A technical abyss, it is dominated by majestic vertical shafts and complex conduits carved into Cretaceous limestone.
Scientific significance: It provides an unprecedented window for studying, monitoring, and protecting the Murge plateau's underground aquifers.
Its exploration is primarily the result of the persistence of the CAI-GASP and local caving groups (discovered in 2012); progressing through it demands technical skill and endurance.
Here are a few shots from the bottom in August of 2025, where the drop in the water table is now clearly evident, with the historic wooden platform sitting well above the waterline.

H/T @ Danyang Sun | UNSW-PhD student
“… [The authors] analysed one year of drip water monitoring data from 46 monitoring sites across six karst regions in southeastern Australia. By integrating fast Fourier analysis, cross-wavelet transform and change point analysis, [they] identified five characteristic recharge behaviours and developed a conceptual framework linking temporal drip dynamics with recharge mechanisms. [They] hope this framework will contribute to a better understanding of recharge heterogeneity in karst systems and support future groundwater research under a changing climate…”

What piece of shite to start the day on social media with. I ask you, what kind of #Grifting brainless entrepreneur would think that there is any sense in sucking up 40,000 megaliters of #water a year from an #aquifer in one of the driest parts of the land on the driest #Continent on earth to stand up an **Intensive** #horticulture business there?
We haven’t seen anything as brainless as this since the Ord River Scheme and cotton industries up North in WA. What kind of madperson even think it is a responsible thing to do? The people behind *Future Agribusiness* are nothing but #NeoLiberal predators looking to profit while raping the land. They don’t give a toss about *Country* and the fragile *ecosystems* on land *Never Ceded* . But I do. In fact, the mojority of this society does care about the land and what is bieng done to it in the name of #NeoLiberalism and #NeoColonialism.
Where is our *Environmental Protection Agency* in all this? Recovering from #Labor Govt death blows no doubt. There is no coming back from this kind of #pillage. Good grief, this is just insane. Here’s hoping the Courts (in reflecting the will of the broader society while adjuticating) will see true justice (in #fascist NT) applied to the benefit of all and not just a few madhats looking to cash up.

Impact of River Morphology on River–Groundwater Exchange in Braided River Systems

H/T @thomas Wöhling | Professor at TU Dresden
“Do you like braided rivers? We think they are soooo beautiful. And they are interesting to study as well. Particularly how these complex and transient systems interact with regional aquifers…”
--
“Coupled models of two braided rivers with real, pre- and postflood event morphologies are studied for river–groundwater exchange changes…”
--
“Braided river systems are an important source for groundwater recharge, but their complex morphology makes river–groundwater exchange fluxes difficult to estimate. Their river channel morphology changes frequently after floods, which has effects on recharge rates that have rarely been studied in the past. This work aims to isolate the effects of changes in braided river morphology on groundwater recharge for two sections of the Wairau River and Waikirikiri River in New Zealand. For each study site, two different river morphology variants of a fully coupled surface water–groundwater model utilizing high-resolution DEMs of river bathymetry before and after a major flood event were set up while keeping parameterization and boundary conditions the same. The models demonstrate that flood-induced morphology changes in braided river systems alter groundwater recharge. [They] identif[ied] features, both simulated and observed, that explain the direction of change. Features that increase groundwater recharge are a larger braidplain aquifer extent and volume, larger wetted area and, specifically, an increase of areas with high exchange rates in locations of larger gradients between braidplain aquifer and regional aquifer. These factors influence groundwater recharge independent of connection (Wairau River) or disconnection (Waikirikiri River) of the system to the regional aquifer, albeit with different magnitudes. An extension of [their] research to other braided rivers is needed to more broadly generalize [their] findings...”

#Australia - #KatherineNT residents say potential damages from #PFAS firefighting foam case should pay for further 'recompense'
by James Elton, 1 June, 2026
Excerpt: "PFASContamination in Katherine was first announced by Defence in 2016 — the result of decades of use of PFAS-containing firefighting foam at #Tindal, which sits above a large and interconnected #aquifer.
"In the immediate aftermath, Katherine's town pool was closed and Defence trucked in bottled water.
"Commonwealth to sue the manufacturer of a firefighting foam containing PFAS chemicals that contaminated 28 #DefenceForce bases across Australia.
"A class action, settled in 2020, resulted in Defence paying $92.5 million to Katherine home owners and businesses to compensate for lost property value, as part of a broader class action that also included Williamtown in NSW and Oakey in Queensland.
"Today, Katherine's town drinking water supply is thoroughly treated using a specialised plant to keep PFAS levels below minimum thresholds.
"But residents with bores in the contamination zone are still advised not to drink their groundwater or eat eggs from chickens that drink water from the bores.
"A 2018 health assessment commissioned by Defence also found there was an 'elevated risk' for anyone who ate fish caught in the #KatherineRiver on a regular basis, defined as one fish per week.
"A Senate inquiry into the issue last year heard evidence that assessment had affected #Aboriginal people in the region, who had historically eaten large quantities and varieties of fish and crustaceans from the river."

Drinking water protections:
By Ben Szalinski and Brenden Moore, Capital News Illinois
“Illinois Senate Bill 1723 bans #carbon #sequestration — the process of capturing and storing carbon by injecting it underground — within an area that “overlies, underlies, or passes through” a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-designated sole-source aquifer. #EPA
The new law applies to the footprint of the #Mahomet #Aquifer, which is the main source of drinking water for more than 500,000 people across a 15-county area in central Illinois.
It comes as Illinois, especially downstate, is targeted for carbon sequestration projects due to the state’s favorable geology and the availability of federal tax credits.
Studies, including those conducted by researchers at the #universityofillinois have found minimal risk to water sources from sequestration activity.
But the legislation was a priority for central Illinois community #activists #environmental advocates and a bipartisan cadre of local lawmakers with zero risk tolerance due to the lack of a clear alternative water source if the aquifer were tainted.”

💧 Aggressive groundwater and the long memory of contamination
Even after more than a decade of monitoring, the groundwater in this carbonate aquifer remains undersaturated with respect to calcite — consistently showing negative SI values across nearly all observation wells.
This means that the system is still chemically aggressive toward limestone, slowly dissolving the host rock.
The impoundment, operating since 1976, continues to influence the aquifer — with the geometry of possible subsurface voids still uncertain to this day.📘 All supporting data and modeling results are included in the draft monograph:

💧 Beyond Diffusion: Groundwater as a Rock–Fluid System
Contaminant plumes in groundwater are often seen as passive — just diffusion and advection through porous media.
But what if we treat them as active geochemical fronts instead? In my recent modeling work, I describe contamination not as a mechanical process, but as a metasomatic transformation — a reaction zone between aggressive mine waters and carbonate aquifers.
Each sector of the aquifer develops its own thermodynamic balance and mineral stability field.
The plume itself becomes a chemical engine — reshaping host rocks, opening new pathways, and shifting the entire water–rock equilibrium.📘 Draft monograph: https://zenodo.org/records/16741148

🌎 Mapping dominant chemical speciation in a polluted carbonate aquifer
In my recent modeling work, I modeled the dominant forms of element speciation in groundwater within a carbonate system.
Beyond pure geochemical curiosity, this approach provides a practical lens:
– it reveals where mineral precipitation is most probable,
– and helps identify zones where remediation can be most effective.💻 Combining thermodynamic modeling (PHREEQC) with spatial analysis in R and QGIS turns subsurface processes into actionable insights for water-quality management and contamination mitigation.
Two figures below show the modeled distribution of cadmium species across the aquifer and their evolution with dilution

Ha'Kamwe' Background information from #SacredLand. #NoLithiumMining! #ProtectHaKamwe!
"Ha’Kamwe’ is a naturally occurring hot spring in the #BigSandyRiver basin where the #Mojave and #Sonoran deserts meet in what is now known as #Arizona. Ha’Kamwe’ is a sacred healing place for the Hualapai Tribe. This important cultural and ecological site is threatened by a proposed #LithiumMine, as a subsidiary of the Australian company Hawkstone Mining Ltd. seeks permission to explore and drill on three sides of the spring, which would destroy cultural sites and block access to the oasis for desert #wildlife. Visiting the site with a reporter from the Phoenix New Times, Hualapai Tribe Director of Natural Resources, Richard Powskey, said, 'This spring is a place for healing and medicine and other things that they have here. Our people are buried all through here. There’s a grave just on the other side of this hill right here.'"
[...]
"At a Wikieup community information session in 2021 many of the 100 attendees were concerned that the proposed mine would drain too much water from this already drought-prone area. Caretaker Ivan Bender feels that the waterflow of the well that feeds Ha’Kamwe’ has already decreased due to the company’s drilling. There is a dispute between the company, the Tribe, and local ranchers regarding how shallow the water table is, with those who live in the area concerned that drilling could easily puncture the #aquifer.
"In the early 2000s a power plant was proposed in the area and though it was never built the Environmental Impact Statement for that project found 'the discharge from Cofer Hot Spring would be reduced, and possibly cease, as a result of groundwater withdrawal from the volcanic aquifer.'
"The #HulapaiTribe is concerned the proposed lithium exploration activity would deplete the spring as well.
"In April of 2021 the #Hualapai Tribe passed a resolution against the mine. 'The Hualapai Tribal Council strongly objects to any further permitting of surface or subsurface disturbances within the #SandyValley Lithium mining claim area, which will result in devastating impacts to significant cultural and spiritual resources; will threaten long-term tribal water rights and quality; will cause irreparable harm to the Tribe’s ability to continue cultural activities and to pursue economic development of Cholla Canyon Ranch, and will result in long term ecological destruction of a fragile desert environment, including plant and animal species with cultural significance. Further, should an open pit mine ever be permitted, it would create enormous public health issues caused by pollution, dust, noise, and overall safety concerns caused by having such a mine immediately adjacent to Hualapai land, as well as severe visual impacts.'
"The Inter-Tribal Association of Arizona, an association of 21 tribal governments in Arizona, which provides a forum for tribal governments to advocate for national and regional tribal concerns and to join in united action to address issues, passed a similar resolution.
"The Hualapai Tribe is demanding that the BLM develop a full Environmental Impact Statement as required by the National Environmental Policy Act. This would require a thorough examination of issues protected by the American Indian Religious Freedom Act. The Tribe asserts that these concerns were not adequately addressed in the published Environmental Assessment: “The BLM’s position as indicated in the EA implies that academically-based western science approaches to research take precedence over traditional #Indigenous knowledge. This position is unacceptable and is not in keeping with the requirement to make a good faith effort to identify cultural resources.'
"In January 2023, #Earthjustice collected and submitted 31,671 letters demanding the BLM conduct a full Environmental Impact Statement.
