Sadly, this is the outcome no one wanted.

After 3 years missing, #leahkeeper 's remains have been found.

Sending my deepest condolences to her family, community, and to all who knew and loved her.

I hope they have some measure of peace, and that justice can be done for Leah, and for all missing and murdered women/men.

If you haven't yet seen #taken on #aptn, I highly, highly recommend it..this groundbreaking series from #eaglevision explores cases of #mmiwg2s #mmimb2s from a humane, informative, and family and community led perspective.

You can find the series on watchaptnplus.ca/, for only about 5.00 a month #cad with a free trial.

I believe episodes are accessible from the #usa as well.

  4. Here in the Canadian prairies, earlier this evening the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) was showing Star Wars (1977) dubbed in (I believe) Cree.

It was pretty great. And I have to say, the elder/actor that they used to dub Obi-Wan Kenobi was fantastic. He sounded perfect for a Jedi who has Seen Things for a long, long time.

  5. The #Anishnabe community of #Kitsicakik in northwestern #Quebec will have access to #electricity after 50 years. It is one of the last communities in the country to be without power and it cost $35 million to accomplish.

I'm so glad to hear this. Thank goodness we have a compassionate, Indigenous #premier who backs up his words with actions.

Sending much love to the Shingoose family and the #StTheresaPointAnisininewNation in the difficult days ahead. I hope that Ashlee being found will bring some peace.

  7. CW: Samuel Bird, missing child, tragic outcome

    aptnnews.ca/national-news/edmo

Rest in power and peace, dear Samuel. You were far, far too young and it's so horrifying that you had to die in this way in particular.

Sending my condolences to his family, friends, and community.

We all need to do better to protect our children.

  8. A comedy about a young, Innu, single mother, living in Nunavut, and learning who and what she is in the world with the help of her small town on the shore of the Arctic Ocean.

I cannot imagine how that pitch went with Netflix, but they partnered with the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network and #CBC, and the result is great.

It’s heartwarming, realistic, culturally sensitive without being cloying (there’s no sense of ‘look at these kooky Northerners!’ here), genuinely funny, and well made.

The performances are solid from everyone (even the Elders), the writing is darned good, and both the cinematography and direction are great.

    It’s renewed for more episodes.

    Really recommended.

100% this. #kinew and co. also couldn't be bothered to respond to #aptn directly when asked for comment...which is especially cowardly and unprofessional, as they are #indigenous leaders not responding to an indigenous network.

  10. Hey fans of ‘North of North’!

To celebrate the announcement of the show’s renewal for season two, CBC has put together a compilation of season one’s funniest moments.

(If you haven’t yet caught the show on CBC Gem or Netflix, now would be a good time. :packetcat_wink: )

  11. Fashion in ‘North of North’ has generated a lot of comment in social media.

I’ve noticed that many of these come with assumptions about what women would be wearing in Inuit communities, and a lack of understanding of the importance of sustainable design in Inuit culture.

CBC has a great feature with interviews with the show’s creators on the point.

‘The show's emphasis on slow fashion ran counter to a film industry that often operates on a quicker schedule.

"Nothing here is mass-made," Aglok MacDonald said. "So it really is going out to independent artists who are just crafting a few things here and there and seeing if they could put in a bulk order."’

  12. The federal elections leaders debate is happening now and I am amazed that APTN is broadcasting a live translated event in Plains Cree.

I speak my James Bay Mushkegowuk Cree dialect fluently and I can understand about 50% of the broadcast and it's beautiful.

It would be like an English speaking person in Canada listening to a heavily inflected English with a Scottish or Irish accent.

  13. North of North has dropped on Netflix today.

It’s an absolute joy of a show that looks misogyny, settler paternalism and intergenerational trauma directly in the eye but still leaves one feeling delighted, cheering on Siaja’s journey as a young ‘modern Inuk woman’ episode by episode.

A CBC-ATPN coproduction with Netflix, it ran weekly on CBC Gem earlier this year in Canada.

It deserves all the viewing minutes globally.

Starting a rewatch is what I needed this week.
