One of the good things about living in the MidRed... A pal was out shooting #duck tonight. He stopped by my apt with some very fresh duck breasts. Shot at 630pm..so very fresh. From my indoor #hydroponic garden I picked some #basil, radish greens, radishes, and from the pantry some tiny oranges....air fried the duck with salt, Szechuan pepper corns, soy and ginger glaze...and in 20 mins ... #aptgarden #kratkyfood

These #hydroponic #peppers better git to growing, I'm using a #kratky setup of a hoocho bucket of cococoir and cotton wick on top a 5 gal bucket of water and nutrients...but the level is getting low now the fruiting is on.

I could add back in maybe 1 gal of mix to keep it fruiting, but I really want to see how #SetAndForget I can get this.

Also adding back into a #kratky setup is a dance, too much and you drown the air roots.

#aptgarden update....simplify redux

After years of playing with #hydroponics the lesson I have learned is ..simplify.

5 gal buckets, water, nutrients, container for substrate, cotton rope for wicking , seed, lights....done

All the #Aerogarden clones and pricey lights....for my scale and need...bye bye.

For my windows it's a scaled down version with #masonjars and net cups instead.
The results over the years are my proof. Simpler makes better.

#Hoocho buckets on a metal pipe frame. Sealed Hoocho buckets under each for water/nutrients. The water wicks up via cotton rope/ the coco coir medium

5 gal bucket, 4 gal water jug w/Hoocho buckets on top . Easy to maintain and great for longer term grows .

The #masonjar #kratky vessels keep going. They are some of the easiest , long lasting, low maintenance methods for short /mid term herbs/greens.

Pumpkin seeds abound. They are starting to wander. The plan is to train them up and around the shelving unit behind them.

The 5 gal tomato bucket with an old AeroCloneArmy light is still spreading up and out. Fruits soon.

Dr #kratky has dropped another in a long line of great videos. Every vid gives me a new idea or bit of info on #hydroponics in general and how to make it work in my #aptgarden .

And so begins a new phase of #aptgarden as #hoocho #hydroponic buckets are finally available in the StatesOfUnited .
Why this form factor? I love my mason jars, they will continue, but top ups in an apt get messy. Watching #Hoocho design, test, rebuild, retest, and tweek use cases has primed my idea for a more contained easily topped up apartment grow system.
While I intend to keep it #kratky I will be using different methods based on the spaces used.
Now to wait for delivery 🚚l

Thanks to @ShaulaEvans and @VickiWoodward for the idea for this. Glass mason jar, silicone mesh for net cup, wicking string...add a covering, grow medium ( I like coco coir), water, nutrients, and seeds. All the base materials are reusable.

Folding the mesh without cuts is still something that needs work as the lid needs a bit of "nudges". Think origami.

Two more Aeros recycled. The first for early growth and tray growing. The other for one or two bigger grows. The light on the second swivels so when the plants outgrows the light they can at least get side or bottom lightning.

Sprout Alley...all grown on silicone mesh sheets in trays.. Cheaper and easier than coco or lecca.

Window tomatoes are flowering.

Window stevia, I pluck the sweet leaves, it grows more.

New quick green onion recovery system. Leaving the roots & a bit to grow on, I bunch em and put them is a small ziplock style silicon bag with some water. I make sure to leave the non root ends out to the light. Add water when dry

Dwarf tomato plant and the window stevia have started intermingling. I am not breaking up the party.

Dwarf pepper seeds have gotten to the point of being planted in their own MasonicKratky Vessels

Aeroclonearmy retooled as a micro green factory. I fill up the tank, lay in the seeds, keep them covered for the first 4 days or so, and then it's grow time.

The wicking method, I can not say enough good things about it. It has given all the kratky jars another way to get water and nutrients to the plant. This tray of stevia is a great example. The wick runs through all the ice cube tray cells such that each gets its fill. Even the fennel is enjoying the fruits of its transport. Roots run along it on the way down.

Winding down the AeroCloneTroopers to reset for a fresh start. All the harvests are done save for the Thai Basil .

The window mason jars are going gangbusters. The pepper plants are hitting the ceiling, the microgreebs lettuce has been goin long enough to be putting out bowls of green, the stevia is non stop, and the micro mini dwarf tomatoes are looking good.

Hoocho's 3dPrintable verandas in a mason jars, wick, and cococoir..one grows must green sprouts the other growing peas...easy to set up and maintain.

It is different enough from other vertical systems and looks to be modable given the modular nature.

And so it grows...The new grow shelf is now setup round to the side of the tent of grow. Two AeroCloneTroopers on top with the other shelves lit for starts, sprouts, and low growing plants. The bottom shelf houses a nice wood box that now holds most of the various bits and bobs(all praises) needed for growing.

A quick vid on how I make my house blend herb mix. Uses what I have on hand , no unitaskers needed.

Once done I put it in a jar or two that I keep in the spice shelf. The results have not hung around long enough to go bad or bland.

Side benefit...your hands will smell amazsauce ....depending on the herbs

Tonight's seed starts...Stevia.
I'm trying out some new silicone ice cube trays with holes in the bottom to tease thru the cotton wool balls. This then sits in a tray of water and a humidity dome on top for the first couple of days.

When these come up 1/2 will go to a AeroClone & 1/2 to a Kratky setup

I got my hopes up for these, I love stevia but not the stuff in stores.

Inspired by the #hoocho video yesterday I went to #menards and took a swing at the idea. I tried to stick to using only what came with the mason jars, the tubing, and simple hand tools. I only added in the net cup in the middle as a refill point...a funnel would make a better choice.

Next up ....set up the star topological all hydroponically kratky refillable hoocho inspired glass garden.

Planning out my next round of starts.

Stevia - notoriously horrible germination rates but the reward is worth it.

Tomatoes - My first crack at these. I picked the smaller ones with shorter maturity rates.

Radish - I have seen a few vids that use a simple technique to give the needed space for full growing.

Mustards - Different varieties that I have tried before.

Mystery Lettuce - Packet included by seller...surprise seeds!

Lowtecho Grow Bucket.
Two 5gal buckets, two cheap full spectrum grow lights , net cups, foil to block/redirect light, duct tape

-The bottom is filled with water+ nutrients and holes for net cups cut out of the lid. Foil wrapped on the outside to block light

- The top is foil lined on the inside to get the most of the grow lights, holes cut in the bottom to let in the net cups, and the grow lights themselves fastened to the bottom of the lid.
