I live in the #Appleverse so I'm not sure. However, my guess is that you can set up an iCloud account without a device. One reason that I keep on shelling out the big bucks for #Apple is that they have the most patient and helpful customer support IN THE WORLD!!

Oh, that's a huge nuisance! A lot of my early trees were saved on zip disks that were never compatible with later computers. Apparently, an external zip drive is quite reasonably priced now, so it's on my wishlist.
In terms of any files for the last 15 years, I've been in the #Appleverse and all of my key files and photos are accessible to me from one device to the next. Happy that I just uploaded all of my photo CDs to my iPhotos last week.
Opened a bin of genealogy docs: TMI for now.

@kamikat @Stitcher Ah, sorry to hear that your laptop is not very helpful. I like in the #Appleverse so everything works together. When i snap a pic on my phone, there it is big-sized so I can edit it and share it easily. The CDs that I uploaded on my iMac can be sent to folks that have non-Apple phones from mine. A lot more money but so much more capability.
