Apple może podwoić bazę użytkowników Mac – zmiana strategii

Analitycy Asymco wskazują, że Apple może podjąć nietypowy krok: tymczasowo obniżyć marże, aby szybciej zwiększyć udział w rynku komputerów Mac.

Zamiast przerzucać rosnące koszty pamięci (napędzane boomem AI) na klientów, firma utrzymuje ceny, gdy konkurencja je podnosi.

Zdaniem ekspertów, to celowa strategia – Apple inwestuje więcej w komponenty, jednocześnie utrudniając sytuację rywalom działającym na niższych marżach. Straty na sprzęcie mają być rekompensowane przez dochodowy segment usług (subskrypcje).

Apple wstrzymuje zamówienia na wybrane konfiguracje Mac mini i Mac Studio

Jednak Horace Dediu, znany analityk zajmujący się firmą Apple, stwierdził, że on sam oraz co najmniej dwóch innych analityków uważa, iż firma mogła podjąć decyzję o priorytetowym traktowaniu wzrostu w czasie, gdy wielu jej konkurentów boryka się z trudnościami. Przytacza on argumenty analityka z Seaport, Jaya Goldberga, który twierdzi, że Apple wykorzystuje fakt, iż jej konkurenci działają przy znacznie niższych marżach, aby zwiększyć swój udział w rynku, opierając się na przychodach z nowych usług, które pomagają zrównoważyć budżet.

Apple płaci wyższą cenę za zakup chipów pamięci, co według Goldberga jest „częścią celowej strategii firmy mającej na celu zaostrzenie warunków dla konkurentów” […] Strategia ta „nie będzie tania dla Apple” – ostrzegł Goldberg, zauważając, że marża brutto na produktach Apple może spaść do poziomu około 30% z poziomu ponad 30% odnotowanego rok temu.

„Uważamy jednak, że firma może nadrobić część tych strat dzięki wzrostowi udziału w rynku” – napisał, ponieważ nowi użytkownicy Apple prawdopodobnie wykupią usługi subskrypcyjne Apple o wyższej marży, aby zrównoważyć koszty sprzętu.

Zgodził się z tym drugi cytowany analityk, a sam Dediu uważa, że wpływ tej strategii może być dramatyczny.

Kluczowym wskaźnikiem jest liczba użytkowników komputerów Mac. 260 milionów to rozsądne założenie [dla obecnej bazy zainstalowanych urządzeń], a podwojenie bazy użytkowników komputerów Mac jest z pewnością wartościowym i osiągalnym celem na następną dekadę.

Efekt? Baza użytkowników Mac, dziś szacowana na ok. 260 mln, może nawet się podwoić w ciągu dekady. Pomóc w tym mają m.in. atrakcyjnie wycenione modele, jak MacBook Neo.

Just finished disassembling a late-Intel-era Macbook Pro to remove the spicy pillows from it, and I gotta say, I am not impressed with Apple's hardware engineering on it.

I'm not talking about them gluing the cells of the battery to the case - that's been discussed to death, and was unnecessary. I'm talking about some other rather bad choices made during design.

Specifically: fasteners. In general, you want the fewest different types of threaded fasteners possible in your design. Fewer parts to keep in stock, fewer possible mistakes when assembling and disassembling units, etc. And Apple utterly failed this design rule.

It's like each separate part in this machine is held in with 3 different fasteners. Sometimes that's unavoidable in a design; you're using machine screw #1 for most things, but there's one that has to go into this particular place where it can't be as deep/long or there isn't room for the same head or something. But in this case, most of the fasteners are different for no very good reason. There's room for them to have used a common screw for many of the cases where they just ... didn't.

Paying the Apple tax for this kind of janky design (and user-hostile repairability) is just insulting.

If you're a "tiling" Window Manager user like me then AeroSpace totally transforms the Mac experience. You can almost forget there's a mouse attached. It's all very familiar if you're an XMonad* user. It isn't quite perfectly seamless, but it's a whole other world of usability for me.

I've got quite a nice modernised setup working at the moment, with AeroSpace, iTerm2, Fish shell, Atuin shell history, and Neovim... still more to enhance, I've barely dipped my toe in with Neovim's capabilities (and currently have nothing like my old vim uber-config running, that's on the TODO list.)

* My dev-box window manager history is: WindowMakXer => FVWM => PWM => Ion => XMonad... admittedly this home desktop currently runs XFCE because I've never really needed it to be a hardcore coding environment.
