  1. Any reason why @lina is blocking me?

I though she went under. Her videos on the Apple Silicon iGPU shenanigans with Linux were so good. :sadness:

  2. Intel hires developer who reverse engineered the Apple M1 GPU, bringing open source Linux graphics to Apple Silicon

When the Asahi Linux team released its first alpha version of a GNU/Linux-based operating system for Macs with Apple M-series processors in 2022, things were still pretty rough around the edges. Thunderbolt, Bluetooth, cameras, and sleep mode weren’t working yet. And neither was hardware-accelerated graphics.

That’s all changed over the past few years. Last fall the team even announced you […]

  3. «Linux on #AppleSilicon is such a bad idea. Do you think Apple is going to make your life easier by porting that?»

And eventually wasn't Apple itself, but its users, what hindered the project.

  4. I wouldn't recommend someone a device 4+ years old, but the #AppleM1 is my only exception.

It's incredible how this machine still holds to this day, and second hand makes it a killer proposition.

I know 8GB and 256GB won't be enough for demanding people, but for the average user, it will, at least for starters.

Finally got my Mac Mini back after the long weekend of National Day and Mid Autumn Festival holidays. Inadvertently, they upgraded to macOS Sonoma even though I told them not to... Oh well. SSD health on this is "reused" logic board is ~41TB data written. Let's hope all the other problems are fixed. Right off the bat I could tell it is running cooler. (I did clean out the dust from previous owner so it's not because of that.)

  9. Messed around with ollama last night and put my wired ethernet connection to good use. Downloaded mistral, llama2, and codellama just to test out some different models. Things aren't as slow as you'd expect and are completely runnable on my m1 macbook air. Pretty exciting to be self-hosting a LLM.

  10. Just installed #macOSSonoma on my #AppleM1 #Macmini. 10 minute download over wifi. 35 minute installation.

Flawless unsupervised process with zero interventions (as usual).

Loving the vineyard wallpaper already. Not sure what new features will be significant for me. I do most of my work on my five year old #iPadPro anyway (it does have a #MagicKeyboard with trackpad attached).

  12. I thought part of the point of #Apple designing its own CPUs was so it can update its lineup more regularly. But despite the M2 having been around since June 2022, half its lineup—including the flagship #MacStudio—is still stuck on the M1, and may stay that way for some time. Frustrating for customers to have to choose between the best form factor and the latest technology. #AppleSilicon #AppleM1 #AppleM2 #Mac macrumors.com/2023/02/05/apple
