On June 28, 2024, the Supreme Court ruled in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson that cities can enforce laws that criminalize public camping and sleeping without violating the Eighth Amendment.

The 6–3 decision means that localities can fine, ticket, or arrest people experiencing homelessness, even when there is not enough shelter.
