Well, this is a little late (I posted it on bsky but not here) but here’s my Albums of the Year for 2024!!
There’s no order except to the top 5 — though of those top 5, I now rank Panzerfaust as #1. Seriously, that album skyrocketed to first place after only a month and a half. It is SO FUCKING GOOD. - erik: Ochu are one of my best discoveries of 2024. I first saw them live on a boat in Stockholm, rubbing pieces of wood against each other, breaking branches, etc. On “Dry Routine”, there are also some woodwork, with sounds from both a regular and an electric saw, and all kinds of lo-fi field recordings, layered and looped into captivating pieces. I first saw them live on a boat in Stockholm, rubbing pieces of wood against each other, breaking branches, etc. On “Dry Routine”, there are also some woodwork, with sounds from both a regular and an electric saw, and all kinds of lo-fi field recordings, layered and looped into captivating pieces. Thanks so much to the 60 Fedizens who shared the albums that rocked their world – it’s nice to see some familiar faces from the 1001 Other Albums project, and some new ones! And, as always, it’s so lovely to get a glimpse into all our diverse tastes in music, and to see people trying something new solely based on a random Fedi recommendation.

- erik: Ochu are one of my best discoveries of 2024. I first saw them live on a boat in Stockholm, rubbing pieces of wood against each other, breaking branches, etc. On “Dry Routine”, there are also some woodwork, with sounds from both a regular and an electric saw, and all kinds of lo-fi field recordings, layered and looped into captivating pieces. Albums of a Lost World
A couple of weeks ago, I had rather firmly decided that I wasn’t going to do an Album of the Year (AOTY) list, even though I had for the previous 8 years. In the past, I typically focused my listening time on keeping up with new releases, searching from January 1 until December 31 for albums to put on my AOTY list. But during the last couple years or so, that whole if-you-don’t-hear-it-before-December-31-it-doesn’t-exist cycle started to feel pretty exhausting, stressful, and pointless. I had particularly started noticing just how few albums on my AOTY lists got more than a couple of spins a year or more later, not to mention the fact that there is an embarrassing number of albums on my lists that I literally have no memory of. So, when I started working through the official 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list and then started the 1001 Other Albums project this past January, I was rather happy to get off of the new-release-merry-go-round, and decided to focus on catching up with all the albums I had missed from any year, leaning heavily on recommendations from Mastodon/the Fediverse. I didn’t avoid new albums, but I didn’t actively go out in search of them as I had in previous years, resulting in new releases being a rather small portion of my listening instead of the majority.
And so, a traditional AOTY list of only 2024 releases makes no sense this year for me. A non-traditional list perhaps is a bit iffy too since I rarely gave an album more than a handful of spins even if I loved it, since I had so many listening projects on the go. But, when I decided to forego any sort of list and just pick my top 3 albums from any year for our Fediverse-wide AOTY list, it proved too difficult to keep to just 3, even if I left out the albums that others had already added. And so, without further ado, here’s my extended list, with my 3 picks for the group list asterisked.
My Top 25(ish) Albums of 2024
- The Cure – Songs of a Lost World (2024): This was my most listened-to album of the year, and would probably be my number 1 if I had to rank the 2024 albums. After its release I decided to do a chronological deep dive of all The Cure’s studio albums, so they ended up being my 3rd most listened-to artist of the year, in both number of albums and minutes.
- Nine Inch Nails – The Downward Spiral (1994)*: This was my best discovery from the 1001 Albums to Listen to Before You Die list – yep, I hadn’t heard it before this year – and it kickstarted my obsession with NIN which led to them being my most listened-to artist of the year, in both albums and minutes. The timing of my NIN deep-dive coincided with a brutal heat wave, ant invasion, and loss of our friend SpaceAce, so this album and NIN in general is inextricably linked in my memory with all of those things (ironically, perhaps, as I’m pretty sure SpaceAce hated NIN).
- Godspeed You! Black Emperor – “NO TITLE AS OF 13 FEBRUARY 2024 28,340 DEAD” (2024): My number 2 if I had to rank the 2024 albums. This band and album have my heart.
- Françoise Hardy – Le Danger (1996)*: I’m sad to say I didn’t listen to any of Hardy’s work when she was with us, and I didn’t even make an effort to check it out after I heard she had left us earlier this year. But then I asked Mastodon for suggestions of discographies to work through to keep my mind off of things post-election, and her named popped up. I devoured all 32 studio albums, making Hardy my 5th most listened-to artist in both albums and minutes. This one is quite different from the rest of her discography, but it’s my favourite.
- Laurie Anderson – Amelia (2024)*: I believe it was only last year that I first stumbled upon Anderson, and this year she kept popping up in my listening, both with older work (especially Big Science) and this, her newest. What a delightful creature.
- Big|Brave – A Chaos of Flowers / Kim Gordon – The Collective / Julie Christmas – Ridiculous and Full of Blood (all 2024): If I had to rank new 2024 albums, these would all be tied for number 3. They all scratch the same itch but from different directions. If I could put together a dream festival, all three of these bands/artists would headline, get on stage for each other’s sets, collab on a live commissioned project, etc.
- Uzi – Sleep Asylum (1986) / Live Skull – Dusted (1987) / Come – Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (1994): I.e., Thalia Zedek! A thousand thanks to Puffer and Defiance for leading me down this road – I’m in love.
- SANAM – Live at Cafe Oto (2024): A live version of their incredible 2023 debut album (Aykathani Malakon). I essentially got a portable cassette player so I could buy this on tape and listen to it – no regrets.
- Rip Rig + Panic – God (1981): Good grief this album is amazing. One of those albums where you remember hearing it for the first time. And Neneh Cherry! Thanks to whoever put this into my Mastodon feed, I’m forever grateful.
- David Bowie – 1. Outside (1995): As per usual, Bowie is in my top artists listened to, this year coming in as my 2nd in terms of number of albums. I’m picking this album to represent this year, because it absolutely blindsided me to find out he did a co-headlining tour with NIN for Outside/Downward Spiral. Many thanks to ErgonWolf for clueing me in and sending me the link to this video, which completely rocked my world. How I missed this in my Bowiemas/Bowienalia deep dives of the previous 8 years is beyond me, but I always welcome another reason to geek out about Bowie.
- Tom Waits – Swordfishtrombones (1983): The first full Tom Waits album I listened to was this one, this summer, sitting on my deck, live tooting it all with a bunch of you on Mastodon, including SpaceAce. It was great. And then, just a couple weeks ago, derthomas and I decided to do a (ridiculously quick) deep dive of Waits’ studio albums in honour of his 75th birthday, which resulted in Waits becoming my 2nd most listened-to artist of the year minute-wise. It was all a whirlwind and perhaps I’d pick Alice or Mule Variations over Swordfish as my favourite Waits if I had to choose, but this one is responsible for finally making Waits click for me.
- Gary Numan – Dead Son Rising (2011): When I announced my newfound obsession with NIN, a couple people on Mastodon sent me links of NIN playing with Gary Numan…and then some more links of just Gary Numan (special thanks to rothko!). The result was that I also became obsessed with Gary Numan, and ended up doing a simultaneous deep dive of his and NIN’s discography. Downward Spiral plus Numan’s 1994 album Sacrifice is what made me realize that 1994 is my sweet spot for music, so I perhaps should put Sacrifice here, but this is my most listened-to Numan album (with Numan being my 6th most listened-to artist).
- Milla – Divine Comedy (1994): I put a call out on Mastodon for recommendations of great 1994 albums and THIS WASN’T ONE OF THEM, WTF! This is Milla Jovovich’s debut album, which she wrote when she was 16 and released when she was 18. Again, WTF. I’m properly obsessed, it’s really great.
- Seal – II (1994): One of the great things about being open to other people’s recommendations is giving stuff a spin that you thought you knew and assumed you would hate…but then finding out you actually love it! This album is fantastic.
- Catherine Graindorge – Songs for the Dead (2024): This was the first I’ve heard of Graindorge, and I’m really looking forward to spending more time with her discography. This album centers around a poem by Allen Ginsberg about Joan Vollmer, who was killed by her husband William S. Burroughs. The topic makes this album strangely connected to a couple other artists on my list this year: Tom Waits’ The Black Rider album was the soundtrack to a play co-written by Burroughs, who included some autobiographical elements about that incident in the play; and Laurie Anderson collaborated with Burroughs a couple times, such as on Mister Heartbreak.
- Boards of Canada – Music Has the Right to Children (1998): My first spin of this was for the official 1001 Albums thing, just after getting the news about SpaceAce. I curled up in a ball of sadness on the couch, put this on, and drifted in/out of sleep. I woke up during the last track, and immediately restarted the album. I now fall asleep whenever I put it on.
- Underworld – Strawberry Hotel (2024): This one was a surprise for me – I wasn’t expecting much but it immediately clicked. I especially find it charming that the band’s only description for it on Bandcamp is “Please don’t shuffle…”. I agree, it’s a full album experience.
- Nemahsis – Verbathim (2024): Nemahsis is a Palestinian Canadian artist, and she had to release her album independently after being dropped by her label. It isn’t widely available because of that, but it’s very much worth seeking out. Really excellent alt-pop, has attracted fans such as Stevie Wonder, who apparently had one of her shows delayed so he could make it on time. Stevie knows good music.
- Moor Mother – The Great Bailout (2024): If Moor Mother isn’t yet on your radar, please take care of that. Very intense, very necessary. The first track on this album features Lonnie Holley, who should also be on everyone’s radar.
- Lou Reed – Metal Machine Music (1975) / Lou Reed – The Raven (2003): I feel like Reed figured more in my listening than the stats actually show, but the impact of those few listens at least were quite large. The MMM album came up somehow in me trying to figure out what industrial music is, and was a rather memorable listen/Mastodon discussion. The Raven is a very bizarre project based on the Edgar Allan Poe musical Reed worked on with Robert Wilson (POEtry), and features some absolute favourites of mine, among others: Willem Dafoe, Laurie Anderson, ANOHNI, Steve Buscemi, and David Bowie.
- Robert Calvert – Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters (1974): This was a SpaceAce recommendation when I asked Mastodon for rock operas/concept albums. I didn’t get to it until he passed, and it was an absolute bright spot in a very sad summer. If you want to hear what Hawkwind mixed with Monty Python could sound like, check this out.
Okay, two more, both compilations and so set off as their own category:
- TRAИƧA (2024): Compilations can be tricky to pull off, particularly when it’s somehow meant to be a cohesive album. And yet this one, with 46 songs spanning 6 LPs, manages to do just that, while spotlighting some absolutely stunning trans and non-binary artists. The intentional organization of the compilation into eight narrative chapters makes this one to sit with, and listen to in order.
- Even the Forest Hums: Ukrainian Sonic Archives 1971-1996 (2024): An amazing collection of underground folk, rock, jazz, and electronic music from the Ukraine. My favourite find via this comp is a band called Omi (2nd last track, “Transference”). I snagged a cassette from Discogs that features their full 1994 EP, and it’s fantastic. The liner notes for the comp state that Ryuichi Sakamoto and Diamanda Galás are on “Transference”, but the cassette doesn’t make any mention of that.

The year-end lists are coming in thick and fast, giving me the chance to finally dismiss some stuff I'm simply never gonna warm to no matter how hard I try (sorry Ulcerate and Kalandra), but also cementing what a barnstormer the year has been for power metal!

The time has finally come. Here is my full #AOTY2024 list.
I confess that @derthomas inspired me to do the list but also to find my own design. However that is yet to be decided, so maybe next year. For now just the plain text with darkish colours.
This is my full list, which means, I have rated exactly all those albums. Sadly, I have listened a few more but I could not focus enough to give them a position on my table.
Edit: Sorry not sorry, there's a lot of non metal albums in that list 😉
