Well, this is a little late (I posted it on bsky but not here) but here’s my Albums of the Year for 2024!!
There’s no order except to the top 5 — though of those top 5, I now rank Panzerfaust as #1. Seriously, that album skyrocketed to first place after only a month and a half. It is SO FUCKING GOOD. (This isn’t even my favorite song off of the album, and listen to how good it is: https://youtu.be/2Xv-WdLO0P0?si=EJo-3b4DGjrXVlZK)

Okay all, the group #AOTY list is up! I've boosted the toot version from @1001otheralbums.com, but footnotes look like crap on here, so it might look better on the blog. Thanks everyone for taking part, there's some great stuff on here to check out - 132 albums, to be exact!
Happy listening! And remember, keep your friends close and your records closer. :ablobjam:

Albums the Fediverse Loved in 2024
Okay all, here are 132 albums the Fediverse loved in 2024, mostly 2024 releases but also some earlier gems! Thanks so much to the 60 Fedizens who shared the albums that rocked their world – it’s nice to see some familiar faces from the 1001 Other Albums project, and some new ones! And, as always, it’s so lovely to get a glimpse into all our diverse tastes in music, and to see people trying something new solely based on a random Fedi recommendation.
Genre tags are included as tasting notes and each title is linked to its Bandcamp or Songlink (with the exception of 2 physical-only releases), so click and listen away – perhaps you’ll find a new-to-you album that gets you through 2025! Check out the footnotes to see who submitted each album, along with any extra comments they included (warning: some comments include MOAR ALBUMS).
Happy listening, and remember to keep your music close by this year, in case of emergencies. And, if you need more recommendations, you know where to find me.

- buffyleigh: This was my best discovery from the 1001 Albums to Listen to Before You Die list – yep, I hadn’t heard it before this year – and it kickstarted my obsession with NIN which led to them being my most listened-to artist of the year, in both albums and minutes. [Also see footnote 40.] ↩︎

The time has finally come. Here is my full #AOTY2024 list.
I confess that @derthomas inspired me to do the list but also to find my own design. However that is yet to be decided, so maybe next year. For now just the plain text with darkish colours.
This is my full list, which means, I have rated exactly all those albums. Sadly, I have listened a few more but I could not focus enough to give them a position on my table.
Edit: Sorry not sorry, there's a lot of non metal albums in that list 😉

Fediverse AOTY List
Edit: This post was a call for people to send in their personal AOTYs from 2024, the final list is now up here.
Hey, so we’re compiling a Fediverse-wide, community-sourced Albums-of-The-Year (AOTY) list, of the albums – from any year – that rocked our worlds in 2024!
For those who follow my personal Mastodon account, you may have seen some tooting about this on the weekend, and people seem to have liked the idea – we already have about 65 albums from 25ish people! So I’m going to leave the call open until the end of the year for any Fedizens who still want to add albums they think others will dig. Then, around New Years, I’ll do up a blog post here with the final list, complete with links to find the albums. You in?
The Rules:
- Anyone with an account in the Fediverse (e.g., Mastodon) can submit their picks. I’ll include each submitter’s username in the final list, leaving off the instance unless asked to keep it in (e.g., mine will be tagged just “buffyleigh”).
- Reply here or to my original post with your top album(s) of the year, to a maximum of 3 per person. I also accept emails ([email protected]) if you include your Fediverse username, or DMs to my personal Mastodon account, but note that this account cannot accept DMs (because it’s a blog), only replies.
- “Top” is absolutely however you want to define it – favorite, most listened to, most personally important, most thought about, most surprising find, representative of an artist you really got into, etc.
- “Of the year” does not have to mean the album was released in 2024. Your submissions can come from any year, so long as it was key in your 2024 listening.
- The final list won’t be ranked or voted on, and will simply be ordered alphabetically. Multiple entries for the same album are most welcome and will be noted in the final list.
- Notes/reasons for your picks aren’t necessary but totally welcome, and if left will be included similar to how we have it set up on the numbered version of The List for the 1001 Other Albums project.
For those who have already contributed or plan to, or for anyone else who’s just curious and wants to see what your fellow Fedizens have been listening to this year, feel free to follow this account (@[email protected]) and check back in a couple weeks! Until then, hope you’re all enjoying AOTY season and (re)finding some great albums to get you through the rest of the year.
P.S. Unfamiliar with the 1001 Other Albums project? Check out this post, and The List. We’re still taking submissions for The List, so if there’s an album you feel everyone should hear that isn’t yet included, please let me know!

#DarkestHour 😅 I was very late to this party. I knew from the EXISTENCE of them. However never ever heard anything from them. I don’t know how and why 🤷🏻♂️
However, it’s a solid release and I listened this one several times!

#Halphas released a gem of german #BlackMetal
It’s rough, it’s melodic, it has a good groove through the whole album! Almost oldschool. I listened in the last two years a lot of black metal albums, this is definitely something different! That’s it from #February as you can see the shortest month had a lot of great music!

#Sujin released in #February an album. It’s #MelodicDeathMetal from #Italy 🇮🇹
Actually nothing special you wouldn’t count with. But if you listen to the whole album, it’s a decent work!#AOTY2024 #TentinsReleaseMonth

Another lucky find while I was checking the #February #releases
#Grin is a #doom #sludge #stoner band from Berlin 🇩🇪
As I said never heard before, but it was an instant one on my list. I’ve read some reviews and some said their sound is very unique in the genre. I’m new to this one and thought, I find it so unique because it’s new to me 😅

And now some #BlackMetal from #France 🇫🇷 I always say french Black Metal hits different and it’s very true for the album of #Griffon
Every song is a piece of French #history packed into metal. I don’t understand a single word but I really enjoyed it!

#EternalStorm from #Spain 🇪🇸is a mix of #MelodicDeathMetal and #MelodicBlackMetal I would even say a bit #proggy
As many of you listened to this album, needless to say how great is this one.

well an #EP again, but this release from #Persefone is sooo good, it had to be! I don’t think I have to say much about this band at all. #ProgressiveMetal at it finest from #Andorra

And now #January is finished.
#Narzissus is a one man show from #Austria 🇦🇹
This #blackmetal album presents a wide variety of instruments, lot of #folk motives from East Europe, especially the #Balkans (for my ears at least). Also some #finnish lyrics. Black metal is often sketchy, Narzissus is #Antifa and #antinsbm one more reason to support him over on his #Bandcamp site if you’re into #atmosphericblackmetal
I love this album and the discography of him was a no-brainer for me.

#Olhava , the Russian duo, released a new album in #January and it’s something unbelievable for me. #atmosphericblackmetal at its finest. A very long album but if you want to give it a spin, I’d recommend listening it in a single session.
It creates a giant virus, which will drag you down (in a very good way) until you reach the bottom. The 1:19 will seem definitely shorter.#AOTY2024 #TentinsReleaseMonth

The next one is actually an EP, sometimes I have to make an exception. #Alluvial 🇺🇸released an EP back in #January. I’m not too familiar with this band. But it’s something along the #ProgressiveDeathMetal #deatchore #djent (?) line. A really enjoyable EP and the lineup is also pretty spectacular. At least for me

✨ #TomsAOTY2024 TIME! ✨
The #10 spot of my #AOTY2024 list is shared, so here is the 2nd album:
🔟 The Smile - Wall of Eyes
I keep thinking about Radiohead every time I listen to this wonderful album because the similarities are undeniable. And if I am being honest, I like The Smiles work better than Radiohead's last few albums.
Wall of Eyes sounds like OK Computer blended with KIDAMNESIAC. It is fantastic, if you like Radiohead. If you don't like Radiohead, you won't like this one.
The album is a grower, it gets better with every spin. The highlight is Bending Hectic, which might be my song of the year.

The new @RunCryWolf album just dropped for me and as I listen, I find myself once again caught in that liminal space between agony and exultation that, when combined, becomes the most devastatingly exquisite euphoria.
The power of music, y'all.

I haven't posted my current #AOTY2024 list in a while now, and there has been some activity.
I really liked #ClovenHoof and #Gatecreeper, also the new #Eels album gets better with each spin.
