2022 has been an interesting year to say the least. Ups and downs all round but at least there were at least as many ups as downs.

Feel like that’s kind of reflected in my Top 30 this year. Here’s to 2023 and hopefully seeing a bunch more of these bands live 🎆🖤

Debit - The Long Count

We don't know what #Mayan music sounded like. What has survived are depictions of music being played and clay whistles showing Mayan deities found in burial sites.
Debit took the sound of the whistles and used #AI to recreate imaginary and haunting sounds and structures. She then edited everything in post to create this eerie fictional soundtrack.

A few favourite albums this year…

Absolutely love Dry Cleaning and Stumpwork more than lived up to expectations. The lyrics on Kwenchy Kups in particular make me laugh every time.

Black Midi 'Hellfire'
These guys just get better with every release. This album is bonkers in ways that can only be understood as raw talent - there's nothing like them; unique.

Imperial Triumphant 'Spirit Of Ecstasy'
This defies convention. It is metal, but with huge slabs of doom laden bass and percussion, experimental jazz patterns and polyrythms.
All my boxes ticked.
Sorry, it's not in the slightest bit Christmassy.

Gnod dropped this loud and dirty release in April. It packs a real punch with its brutal and unrelenting repetitions and drones that make it feel 'industial' in the literal sense. A powerful, unpollished and gritty album.

The name of the band seems like they are going for shock value, but the opposite is the case. The songs are really well crafted and keenly focused on sound. Often they seem straighforward at first but then take an unexpected turn along the way. This is one of those albums I can put right back on after it's over.
