  1. AvBrief has what looks like the real scoop on the AOPA board firing Darren Pleasance. By all accounts, he was actually effective as a CEO, turning the organization around significantly during his short tenure. Maybe some board members were threatened by having someone more competent than themselves, or maybe just more honest, in the CEO seat.

  2. CW: General Aviation drama

Last week, the AOPA (airplane owners and pilots association) board sacked now-former CEO Darren Pleasance after ~a year in the role. Claiming they reached a mutual decision driven by the fact that Pleasance lives in Bend, OR, and they want someone closer to AOPA headquarters in Maryland.

To be explicit, this entire thing is fucking bullshit. Quite frankly, Pleasance is the best CEO AOPA has had in years. He’s helped advocate for much needed change in the aviation community: pushing for unleaded fuel (yes, it’s the mid 2020s and most small aircraft still burn leaded fuel), advocating for mental health reform, use-of-ads-b reform (trying to get it so that it can’t be used for fees and such), and otherwise working to grow GA by meeting with pilots and working to address their actual needs.

This is in very stark contrast to previous CEOs who seemed much more like they were just pushing to make it so existing aviators could keep flying as they got older (and maybe shouldn’t be flying anymore?), and were otherwise uninspiring leaders.

Quite frankly, I’d like to see those in the board responsible for this change to be fired or otherwise forced to resign. Barring that, I’d like Pleasance reinstated.

Like, I am a member of AOPA solely because it’s a way to support a friend who writes for them. But I have felt much better represented by EAA (experimental aircraft association), of which I am very happily a member, because they’re actually working to do the job AOPA should also be doing.

You bet your ass I’ll be sending AOPA a letter about this bullshit.

  3. Looks like the FAA is following through on pushing GA traffic out of major airports.

    Being reported all over:

"FAA Bans Most General Aviation Flights At 12 U.S. Airports"

Lots of exceptions to this, but only for medical, law enforcement, military etc.

    These include:

ORD, DFW, DEN, BOS, IAH, ATL, JFK, EWR, PHX, LAX, DCA and SEA.

  4. New sport pilot regulations remove LSA weight limit, expand privileges

"Aircraft with maximum speeds of 250 knots calibrated airspeed, retractable gear, and constant-speed propellers will now qualify as light sport aircraft under the highly anticipated Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification (MOSAIC), which dramatically expands the LSA category and sport pilot privileges. Aircraft with flaps-down stall speeds up to 61 KCAS will be able to be certified as LSAs, and pilots will be able to operate aircraft with clean stall speeds of up to 59 KCAS under sport pilot privileges."

"Changes for sport pilots and light sport repairmen take effect 90 days after the publication of the final rule, with changes for LSA certification following a year after the publication."

  5. So, I emailed #AOPA about their endorsement of the Republican budget bill.

Their response was, basically, "We like Air Traffic Control funding and ignored everything else in the bill."

When I pointed out that the "everything else" included funding concentration camps which should have been a red line, they said "I understand and respect your position." and ended the conversation.

If you don't want your membership dues funding this, cancel now.

  6. I just cancelled my automatic renewal for #AOPA after learning that they endorsed Trump's budget bill.

Endorsing the administration that's strip mining the #FAA while building an army of secret police to disappear people isn't the way to advocate for anyone good.

  7. @m you just described my grievance with every advocacy organization I'm a member of. (Side-eye at #AOPA)

  8. #AOPA has a detailed article on the financial issues at Van’s #Aircraft:

“Van’s needs 70 percent of the roughly 4,800 customers with unfilled orders to accept higher prices to make reorganization feasible. The #Oregon firm has a few weeks left to convert enough contracts to higher prices paid to be able to reorganize—or face potential liquidation if no viable reorganization plan is approved by the court and no buyer emerges to take over in such a case."

  9. So, I got this in the mail the other day. I didn't even know it was my 25th year. Also, I'm old!

  10. As GA and #Bizav #pilots prep to head to Vega$ fot the #F1 race, #AOPA is working to fight price gouging by the FBOs:

"AOPA FIGHTS PRICE GOUGING AT LAS VEGAS VALLEY AIRPORTS - EGREGIOUS FEES AT AIRPORTS A TROUBLING AND GROWING TREND”

    From the article:

“...Atlantic Aviation at Harry Reid said the special event fee for the F1 race weekend is $3,500. Signature’s one-time fee [at Harry Reid] is nearly double at $7,700.”

  11. Damn.
One of the best of the best died in a plane crash yesterday. Former Air Force Thunderbirds Commander w/ 100+ flights in the lead plane. Probably the most well respected face in Aviation Safety. Likely saved countless lives in his work with #AOPA Air Safety Institue.
    #RIP Richard McSpadden.

  13. Made the short hop tonight from Reagan National (KDCA) over to Frederick Municipal Airport (KFDK) to put Maryland in the logbook of my #XPlane #Flightsim USA Air Tour.

On departure from KDCA, Tower let me buzz the U.S. Capitol. Dudes on roof with giant rifles were not amused.

Parked in front of the #AOPA offices at KFDK, going in tomorrow to ask them why I haven't yet won one of their sweepstakes airplanes. It’s really not right.

  14. I’m confused. The certificate that comes with the #AOPA #basicmed course says you must keep it with your logbook and produce it when requested. Don’t you need to have your medical with you when you fly?

  15. @chris Thanks! It was taken by my son on one of our flights together. My long-repressed aviation dream got un-repressed a few years ago What kind of flying did you do? Also #AOPA has a rusty pilots program in case you ever get back into it 🙂
