Here we go again…Allan Behm (writing for the Australian Institute) serves up another word salad and take pockshots at… Australia’s adherence to the NPT via… well, everything submarine and US alliance with a limp lettuce. Or is it a swipe at Senator #Conroy ‘s interview performance on 7:30? You tell me, I couldn’t decide which.
I might also note that the Virginia boats to be sold to Australia are capable of launching US Cruise missiles (Tomahawk and its latest nuclear capable incarnation) via torpoedo tubes (simple google search will reveal that much). Hence, so are current USN Virginia boats not just the new ones to be built — that makes the USN SSGN rotations in HMAS Stearling in 2032 the author references here irrelevent — we’d be hosting potentially nuclear armed SSN (from the US and potentially the UK) well before then… might already have.
My opinion of the author’s writing craft is decidedly going on a slide into the bin. Read him if you must, just keep your wits about you and read him very carefully and have a think about it.
Just in case my writing here attracts critical comments, in my defence, this is a toot, not an analysis, nor anything I’d consider ready for publication.

US allies and partners need to be very aware of the ramifications of this exceptional US law enforcement practice.
If, down the line, the US military encounters a more robust response than it did in Venezuela, it could trigger NATO treaty obligations for European countries and Canada, and ANZUS treaty obligations for Australia.
So, if the US continues down this road, there’s every chance the consequences of its interventionism could be felt by many around the world.

I’m old enough to remember me tooting how grateful I am that NZ doesn’t possess large oil reserves.
Having said that, our mates across the ditch have huge resources of rare minerals and being threatened by Trump’s personal Wormtongue Netanyahu.

While I agree with the writer, I feel that following #PennyWong’s declared support for US Aggression in Iran, the horse has well and truly bolted.
“Labor governments have a proud history of supporting the UN charter. The Albanese government consistently references its support for international law and international institutions. The US strikes on Iran require a firm Australian response supporting the rules-based international order. Any US requests for military support arising from these incidents should be declined.”

Alan Kohler decries #MadKingTrump ‘s attempt to circumvent the legal system and shoring up support by pardoning convicted criminals. Rule by ‘fiat’ seems to be the #TrumpAdministration mantra fueled by the ideology behind #Project25 .

Trump has shown that all bets are off - all contracts are null & void. I reckon tell them the rent has gone up (and to be paid in advance, of course) for all military and intelligence facilities. We should be able to screw enough out of them to more than cover the cost of those submarines that we're never likely to get anyway.#AusPol

I am finally getting around reading John Fahey’s The Factory: The official history of the australian intelligence directorate, Vol 1 (Allen & Unwin 2023). I had know this work was in progress for a number of years but had totally forgot about it. Until a few days ago when I saw it on the shelves of my local library.
Why am I writing this? Because of a paragraph I read which shines a light on Australia’s current strategic dilemma.
Timeline: August 1914
“The aggressive stance of Germany in relation to British naval superiority marked her out as Britain’s most obvious threat, and so plans were put in place to deal with that threat. In line with Lord Palmerson’s principle of ‘no eternal allies and no perpetual enemies, just eternal and perpetual interests’, Britain also developed similar plans for dealing with France, Russia, and even the United States.”Perhaps that is a principle that our Australian govt ought to have kept in mind. My own view is that our govt teaches us that we never learn from history (unless one is a historian or a reader of history).
