Beyond beauty, colour serves important functions for #frogs and #toads around the world
https://communities.springernature.com/posts/beyond-beauty-colour-serves-important-functions-for-frogs-and-toads-around-the-world paper: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-023-43729-7"The study documents for the first time the importance of colour-based #thermoregulation, #UVprotection, and #pathogen resistance in #anurans... Thermoregulation and #UV-protection was generally of greater importance in temperate regions, and pathogen resistance was of greater importance in the #tropics."

There are so many reasons to love #wetlands , but #today I am appreciating a joyful chorus of #springpeepers welcoming #spring. In case it hasn’t reached you yet, enjoy this little #video.
#wetlands in urban areas keep us in touch with the seasons and remind us to care for the wildlife in our #environment.

Why #Frogs Survived the #Asteroid That Wiped Out the #Dinosaurs
https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/how-frogs-survived-the-asteroid-impact-that-wiped-out-dinosaurs-180981195/ by Riley BlackExtreme-sized #anurans are more prone to #climate-driven #extinctions https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666900522000132
The high resilience of frogs to the last #MassExtinction has been a mystery... During the end of the #Cretaceous, Feijó et al. found, most frogs were medium-sized—about 3 inches—and were not at either extreme. Quirks of #amphibian #physiology might explain why medium-sized frogs are so resilient.

New insights into the #evolution of color patterns in #frogs and #toads https://phys.org/news/2022-11-uncover-insights-evolution-patterns-frogs.html
Paper by Sandra Goutte et al.: https://academic.oup.com/mbe/article/39/11/msac235/6783210 #genomics #amphibians
Many #anurans have a light stripe along their back, which, when observed from above, creates the #OpticalIllusion that the animal is split in two halves and confuses visually-oriented #predators. Little is known regarding its evolution or genetic origin.
