Queen in a drawer. A test tube can seem like a small space for such a large, majestic insect, but this mimics what she would have built or found for herself in the wild, a narrow hollow under bark, a repurposed carpenter bee burrow, or a hole excavated with her own mandibles queen ants seal themselves in creating a space with no exit, total darkness and seclusion to maximize moisture and avoid discovery.

Even the queen moves quickly. They are always fighting over who gets to carry what. There is generally a small clutch of eggs in the nest and I have never seen them set it down. An ant is always proudly holding the cluster of new eggs and she won’t let her sisters help her hold it. I think they must sit it down when it’s dark and quiet in the nest— but if I’m taking photos? well we never get to see them calm first that reason! Ants notice photographers! #formica #ants #antvideo

Look at this big beautiful carpenter ant major from my Camponotus pennsylvanicus colony! I picked her up with the paint brush and just let her wander around on my hand for a bit. She's so gentle and curious.

It's been a few days since I've opened the enclosure for her colony, so she must have been lost in the apartment for several days. She managed to not get eaten by a spider or by #pica! (yes Pica will eat ants)
I gave her some sugar water before returning her to her home. #antVideo #camponotus #ants #antkeeping #antsOfMastodon #WithNarration

You call them "Fruit Flies" But to the girls these are "Sky Burgers"
Tonight is Sky Burger Night at the carpenter ant nest. I gave them like 30 and they are just ... gone. I can't see them in the nest even. It's like they inhaled them. #antvideo #ants #carpenterants #camponotus #antkeeping

Here's a video with some narration about the "#ant porch" I got from undergroundCiti a few weeks back. It has a little water mote and lets you interact with the ants close up and take photos. I might modify it to have its own lighting system. There is so such thing as "too much light" when photographing ants.
Enjoy! and let me know what you think.

These girls love their sugar water. Watch how their little gasters expand in this timelapse. I think the feeder will be empty by morning!
