Since they were mowing the park all day I was nervous to find out if #antsFivePoints would be spared. Well the signs worked!
Since the hill is the only part of the park that still has tall grass it was full of birds feasting on all the bugs chased there— This is a great start. I will try to plant some good local flowers in fall.

Lasius emarginatus workers trying to keep the larger Camponotus nearctius worker from entering their territory at #antsFivePoints
She was able to go where she wanted because she’s much faster— but emarginatus can be very annoying.

What you need to do is add more ant species so you create a high pressure dangerous foraging zone like #antsfivePoints they will eat basic sugars but not in a place like the top of the wall where there are so many colonies crossing paths and all the ants are on high alert.
(I'm half kidding. Often successful 'invasives' thrive due to their love of junk food. )

Urban ants turn their nose up at most simple sugars, things like jam and candy don't interest them. But if it's from bees? Well. Then they are very excited.
High quality honey was enough of a bribe to get these Lasius neoniger workers to pose for some photos. (the stick is coated in honey)
They also love bee pollen. I assume bees find this all very distressing.
It's nice to see a native, if very common ant thriving in the local park. #antsfivePoints

They weed whacked the #antsFivePoints 😢
I may make a sign that says “Pollinator Sanctuary: Do Not Mow” — it looks so horrible.
The good news is someone else is picking up trash in the park which is good for the ants and other insects—

You'll be correct most of the time with the "it's darker brown" rule... but not all of the time.
And it'd be really exciting to find americanus in the Bronx again (they have been spotted, just not as often)
I have started to notice that when you have one ant species in an area there tend to be many more similar species. Just a whole cluster of very similar ants all attracted to the same ant friendly things.
This is why you have places like #antsfivePoints

Exciting action from “ants five points” today I offered the Formica pallidefulva ant a hunk of chicken. This ant attempted acrobatics while carrying the heavy load: she climbed down a vertical surface and attempted to climb under a ledge to the location of their nest, but lost her balance nearly falling into a nest of pavement ants! (I may have helped her) she scaled the wall again still carrying her prize and disappeared into her nest.

Tetramorium (pavement ants) are upset to be “tiny”
(When I took this photo of them by their nest I didn't notice the scary open mandibles. Had to "enhance" to see that. They are gonna give you a pinch if you try to come in! Oh no!)

This Formica pallidefulva(I had the wrong ID!)
At first I was disappointed to see two of them fighting each other, but I realized that meant that there must be at least *two* colonies living in close proximity, so when they have their nuptial flight, there is a chance that there will be mated queens! #ants #antsnyc #nycants #antsFivePoints
