Yes, antlers are ExoSkeletons! The antlers most folks think of, the hard looking ones without velvet, are bone. When antlers are growing in, they’re a mix of bone, blood vessels, cartilage, tissue, skin/fur etc. In most non-equatorial deer, new antlers are annual.

Horns on the other hand only have a partial bone protrusion from the skull inside. They get their shapes, color, & texture from keratin (think finger-/toe-nails, for any humans on here).

#AntlerWatch two more friends came by today, though my friend joked she didn't believe me because their lack of shadows looked like poor CG.

(It was after sunset, with still-bright clouds above, the phone did a remarkable job with white balance and exposure)

an earlier alert posited that perhaps antlers had been cast, but from today’s 5 visitors show only 2/5ths have cast their seasonal finery!

There’s still a chance I might find some antlers this year ! :3

#AntlerWatch sometime between last update and today, antlers were cast! I looked around our yard and didn’t find any sadly, but I did find a young buck hanging out in the unfenced greenway.

I was able to tell via zoom lens that one of our neighbor does has a clipped ear. I guessed it was a similar meaning to the ear clip on some wild cats, but she was still close by two fawns & another adult.

I’ll try to remember to research this when I have more spoons. Still sooo tired from the last week.

#AntlerWatch Two came back! I was able to notice that one of them had antlers with pieces broken off of.

They both seem antsy to shed the antlers, brushing them on trees and foliage even when not sparring.

It was wild listening back to it—I hadn’t heard the siren, wind or birds.

I had only heard the clacks, and indeed heard them with my whole body. Viscerally. Like inducing a trance maybe.

The Doe they were ostensibly fighting over was extremely disinterested in their actions, as was the one point yearling with her. Antlered kin and their dramaaaa what a snoooozefest!

The sparring went on for 20+ minutes meandering across the hillside in boughts.

At one point another Pointy Boi showed up and walked past their sparring—they paused to see what the deal was and then resumed.

They’ve since wandered along the corridor between human fences.

This years’ antlers are still on the two visitors today, and looking beautiful.

However I suspect the casting off will be soon, maybe even a few jumps or knocks away!

Did you know that while most horned beings have horns made of material like our fingernails, deer antlers are bone?

And most horned beings keep their horns their whole lives, while most antlered deer grow a new pair every year?
