I had to spend some time on a Windoze 11 machine yesterday. A nasty little worm had managed to take over the Chrome browser. It had removed the Google search engine entry, and when you entered that manually tried to send you to a blacklisted site. It also had taken over the new tab function to do the same.

Fortunately an anti-virus package was blocking the redirect as the site in Blacklisted.

Weiteres Zero-Day Sicherheitsloch in Windows Defender

Der Hacker Nightmare Eclipse (oder Chaotic Eclipse), der sich schon seit Anfang April auf einem Rachefeldzug gegen #Microsoft (MS) befindet, hat genau einen Tag nach dem MS-Flickentag die nächste #Zero-Day Sicherheitslücke veröffentlicht. Die steckt wieder mal im Windows Defender*. Die Lücke ist inzwischen die zehnte in seinem Zoo. Einen auf W-X und W-11 funktionierenden Exploit liefert er gleich mit. Da die Lücke bisher nicht bekannt war (auch nicht bei MS), gibt es noch keinen Flicken dagegen. Herzlichen Glückwunsch an alle Windows-Nutzer/innen. ClamAV è così cortese che, nonostante Debian si ostini a mantenere nei repository una vecchia versione, ci consiglia di non farci prendere dal panico, e magari di dare un'occhiata alla documentazione, che non fai mai male!
Per quieto vivere poi, gli aggiornamenti dei database li fa comunque.

E poi dite che la riga di comando è ostica!

Echipa de dezvoltare din spatele ClamAV, cel mai popular și utilizat motor antivirus open-source din lume — integrat masiv pe serverele de mail, în gateway-urile web și pe sistemele Linux din întreaga lume — a anunțat lansarea oficială a versiunii 1.5.3. Aceasta este o actualizare critică de mentenanță și securitate, menită să corecteze mai multe vulnerabilități descoperite în modulele sale de scanare.

Dacă folosești ClamAV pentru a-ți proteja infrastructura împotriva programelor malițioase (malware), această actualizare ar trebui aplicată fără întârziere pentru a preveni posibile atacuri.

Iată principalele detalii ale patch-urilor aduse în versiunea 1.5.3:

🔹 Remedierea vulnerabilităților din motoarele de parsare:
Miezul ClamAV se bazează pe capacitatea de a deschide, decompresa și analiza o varietate uriașă de formate de fișiere. Versiunea 1.5.3 rezolvă breșe de securitate descoperite tocmai în aceste componente logice. Atacatorii puteau crea fișiere modificate special (cum ar fi arhive sau documente PDF corupte) care, în momentul în care erau analizate de antivirus, puteau provoca prăbușirea serviciului (Denial of Service) sau erori de tip buffer overflow.

🔹 Prevenirea blocării serverelor (Infinite Loops):
Au fost corectate bug-uri care puteau bloca procesul de scanare într-o buclă infinită în timpul procesării anumitor structuri de date imbricate. În medii de producție (cum ar fi scanarea e-mailurilor în timp real), acest lucru ducea la un consum de 100% din resursele procesorului și la blocarea completă a cozilor de mesaje.

🔹 Optimizări generale și stabilitate:
Pe lângă patch-urile stricte de securitate, ClamAV 1.5.3 aduce îmbunătățiri de performanță pentru motorul de scanare de text și actualizează bibliotecile interne pentru o mai bună compatibilitate cu formatele de fișiere de ultimă generație.

⚠️ Recomandare pentru administratori: Deoarece ClamAV rulează adesea ca un serviciu de fundal automat (demonul clamd), este esențial să actualizați pachetul imediat pentru a vă asigura că serverele nu sunt expuse unor vectori de atac ce vizează chiar instrumentul de protecție.

Noile pachete sunt deja trimise către managerii de depozite ai marilor distribuții Linux și pot fi descărcate sau compilate din surse de pe site-ul oficial ClamAV.

Auf einigen PCs in der Familie ist noch Windows 10 LTSC IoT im Einsatz, teilw. schon seit Jahren. Funktioniert bisher super.
Jetzt ist nur ein Problem aufgetaucht: Der #Antivirus von #FSecure unterstützt kein Win 10 mehr, auch kein LTSC IoT. D.h. große rote Warnung weil das neueste SW-Update nicht mehr installiert werden kann.

And yes, that's part of a real response a dev got.

So they claim: your app is malware, as long as it is not at Google Play. I'd say we've heard it the other way around, too…

All this talk about #Linux #malware / #spyware / #ransomware in the news is making #Linux itself sound unsafe, so I guess I'll post some info. First of all, only #AUR (Arch User Repository) is affected, meaning only #Arch users need to worry, and only if they have downloaded updates for the specific abandoned packages in the past month or so when the attack began. Everyone on non-Arch distributions is safe, everyone on #Cachy, #SteamOS, and #Endeavor who isn't actively using AUR is safe, only people who actively downloaded recent versions of specific packages from this specific repository are affected.

Linux is still Safe for virtually all users.

Ironically, #Microsoft may be partially to blame for this, as a chunk of the issue is #GitHub projects being taken over, and the amount of Vibecode slop that's overwhelming the people who normally check for this.

But remember, AUR is not some niche or abandoned project: there are hundreds of experts all around the world - from NATO governments to megacorporations to major #OpenSource leaders - actively trying to mitigate and solve this problem from every angle. It will be handled eventually, and we'll come out more resilient for it.

In the meantime, if you're on Arch... Just don't bulk-update your AUR packages. Run #Pacman and #Flatpak's System Update, and don't mess with AUR unless you need something from it, and look it over when you do, which should be standard behavior anyway.

You should already have an #Antivirus setup, like ClamAV, but also, someone made a script which checks if you have anything from the list of known packages too...
