With much of Democratic Party leadership playing dead and apparently hoping Trump dies from embarrassment after reading his polling numbers, there hasn't been a lot of political opposition to Trump's fascist regime to talk about. One noted exception however, has been Maine Governor Janet Mills and her refusal to cave to Trump's anti-trans pogrom on behalf of transgender athletes in the state's school system. Some of you may remember Mills from her contentious encounter with Downmarket Mussolini in the White House where the president threatened federal funding for Maine and tried to intimidate the Governor into enforcing his (unconstitutional) anti-trans executive order. Mills famously responded "I'll see you in court" and now she has; winning a decision to block the Trump administration's attempts to withhold federal funds for school lunches in the state unless Mills agrees to discriminate against trans kids.
For more details about this story, I'd like to share this fourteen minute video by Mike Figueredo of the Humanist Report. I picked this admittedly broad discussion because Mike does an excellent job of putting the Trump regime's actions in the proper context of authoritarianism and anti-trans discrimination, while effectively contrasting the activities to resist Trump in the Democratic Party, against the collaborators and surrender muppets who're consistently advising the Party to abandon vulnerable marginalized groups at the precise moment a fascist regime comes for those people.
One segment that really stood out to me is when Figueredo explained that estimates indicated there are as few as two transgender athletes playing high school sports in the entire state of Maine. This of course highlights the unfathomable malevolence of the Trump regime towards trans people, in that they would threaten a school lunch program that serves 170,000 students in the state among other threatened funding cuts, just to discriminate against two trans people; the fact that Mills is willing to fight for the human rights of two people in her entire state when the stakes are this high demonstrates her ability to rise to the moment in the fascist Trump 2.0 era. By contrast however, when Mike asks if anyone believes a guy like Gavin Newsom would make the same choice, I think anyone who is paying attention can agree the answer is no. By contrasting Mills' active resistance to Trump's ongoing war against her state, with the appeasement and collaboration agenda proposed by folks like Newsom, Rahm Emanuel, and Elissa Slotkin, Figueredo also illuminates the likely reason that the public doesn't feel like Democrats are doing enough to resist the Trump agenda, and the Party remains mired in terrible polling even as the Trump regime also craters in popularity.
It's a broad, electoral politics-focused discussion, and I don't want to blow sunshine up your butt about a single court ruling. But if we're going to rip the liberal establishment for collaborating with fascism, it makes sense to talk about what a realistic opposition to Trump's fascist agenda might look like. Nobody is throwing a ticker tape parade here, but a Democratic Party lead by folks like Mills, Van Hollen, Pritzker, Ocasio-Cortez, and Sanders all resisting the Trump regime is an asset to folks who don't like fascism; while one that insists on embracing Trump's fascist agenda and throwing marginalized people to the wolves, is not. It would be nice if for once, The Democratic Party's leadership class made the right choice.

"Trump publicly attacked Maine’s governor, Janet Mills, back in February after she refused to comply with his discriminatory trans sports ban in schools. She told Trump, “I’ll see you in court,” and he retorted by saying it would be an “easy” win against her. The Trump Administration subsequently launched a probe into her state, and Trump himself demanded an apology from Mills on Truth Social. She never backed down and just had a major victory against the Trump administration in court."

The Skinny is a cleaned up collection of my Fediverse blog posts; this time from April 16th to April 19th. Topics explored include Trump's ICE Gestapo, the anti-trans pogrom, signs that a Christian Nationalist purge is brewing in the Trump administration, Broligarchs, and why Seb Gorka just implied half the country are aiding and abetting terrorists by fighting back against the Trump agenda.

"As such, it should absolutely alarm you when Seb Gorka goes on TV to repeat and reinforce the US government’s fact-free claim that Kilmar Abrego Garcia is literally a “terrorist,” and starts characterizing people who oppose Trump’s illegal “deportation” of Garcia as folks potentially “aiding and abetting” terrorists; because again, for some mysterious reason (they’re all nazis too) the Trump regime gave this disgraced War on Terror-era reject authority over protecting America from whoever the hell the regime says are “terrorists” apparently. How Gorka finds the time to do so amid his typically busy day of doing Islambophia, warmongering, and spreading fascist ideology, remains a mystery."

In a move that demonstrates mainstream Democrat politicians have learned absolutely nothing from helping to build a fascist police state panopticon, and the migrant carceral complex, before shitting themselves so hard they lost to a would-be dictator like Trump, Massachusetts Dems have quietly passed a trans student sports ban timebomb and are trying to sell it as a victory for protecting trans rights:
https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/massachusetts-house-dems-pass-bill
Massachusetts House Dems Pass Bill That Could Ban Trans Students From Sports; Senate Next
"On Wednesday, the Massachusetts House of Representatives passed a $1.3 billion budget bill that included a transgender sports ban—the first such measure to pass any legislative chamber in a blue state. Rather than voting to strike down the provision, Democrats advanced an amendment allowing the ban to go into effect only after its impacts are studied. Party leaders framed the move as a win for transgender rights, claiming the study would never materialize and the ban was effectively dead. But critics argue the provision puts transgender people at risk if political winds shift or future administrations decide to act on the study. Discussions suggest Democrats chose the procedural maneuver to shield members in swing districts from casting a vote in support of transgender rights."
Are you fucking kidding me? Let me see if I understand this correctly. In the middle of a state-sanctioned, anti-trans pogrom being conducted by fascists who have already declared that trans people don't exist, and openly admitted they're trying to drive trans people from public life, (two things that historically have preceded the direct extermination of marginalized groups), a solidly blue state government full of supposed "liberals" just passed an anti-trans law they promise not to actually enforce, because - they don't want to go on record standing up for the human rights of trans people as doing so is unpopular? Did I get that right? So the reason you decided to literally provide ideological support for an anti-trans pogrom is that you're cowards, and that makes it okay somehow? Quick question; if launching Chuck Schumer into the sun polled well, would you folks be afraid to oppose that on record too, or are you only cowards when we're talking about the human rights of trans people?
Look, if American liberals don't want me to point out that the war on trans rights (which aids a real as fuck anti-trans pogrom being conducted by the fascist right) is a bipartisan initiative, they need to start telling the political leaders they insist I *have* to vote for to stand up for trans people being targeted by a nazi moral panic with eliminationist characteristics; it's gotta be you folks, because it's clear as fucking day that the Democratic Party as a whole isn't listening to trans people like me.

Many critics, who almost invariably do not work in the fields of historical study or education, will reflexively scoff at the idea that the Trump regime is attempting to erase, or re-write history in a way that supports a Christian Nationalist worldview as the official truth and indeed the only valid, legal way to speak about history; often while admitting that Trump is functionally illiterate and certainly doesn't read much history. Of course that argument is irrelevant because he's surrounded by a whole bunch of white nationalist freaks who certainly do read and care about history, in so much as it furthers their project to transform America into a permanent fascist dictatorship and white ethnostate; Stephen Miller, who is clearly functioning as the regime's Goebbels, has certainly read a history book or two. Even setting that obvious reality aside however, sometimes Trump's executive orders just come right out and admit this is the plan. Take for example Der Führer's recent order to put noted white nationalist (and Vice President) JD Vance in charge of scrubbing the Smithsonian museum (and zoo) complex of "improper ideology."
https://www.commondreams.org/news/trump-smithsonian-executive-order
'Unabashed Fascism': Trump Executive Order Targets 'Improper Ideology' at Smithsonian
"U.S. President Donald Trump has elicited a fresh wave of anger after he signed an executive order on Thursday targeting exhibits or programs critical of the United States at the Smithsonian Institution, a sprawling network of largely free museums and Washington, D.C.'s National Zoo.
The order aims to prevent federal money from going to displays that "divide Americans based on race" or "promote programs or ideologies inconsistent with federal law and policy," as well as remove "improper ideology" from Smithsonian's museums, education centers, and research centers.
"This is unabashed fascism," wrote the journalist Lauren Wolfe on X on Thursday. Look, if you think I'm being uncharitable about the purpose of this executive order, you can simply read the order yourself (here: https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/03/restoring-truth-and-sanity-to-american-history/) because Downmarket Mussolini makes it very clear this is about erasing the history of slavery, structural racism, the existence of trans women, and anything that makes white people uncomfortable about the history of a white supremacist country built on chattel slavery and genocide. Trump even pinned the tail on the donkey by instructing the interior secretary to reinstall statues and monuments removed or changed since January 1st, 2020; and if your memory is failing you, that date is clearly about undoing projects to remove monuments to racists and Confederate slavers, in response to the efforts of the Black Lives Matter movement and the George Floyd protests.
Anyone arguing this is about preserving history from ideology (a phrase that makes zero sense because history is affected by the ideologies governing human behavior at the time it happens; obviously) somehow, is literally pushing fascist propaganda; this is about establishing an official narrative in support of a white nationalist permanent social and political order, and slowly eliminating any source of facts that might argue with that narrative. This is ideological policing, and history has shown us that these efforts to rewrite the past and eliminate dissenting narratives typically end in, literal, mass graves.

So as I mentioned yesterday, I'd like to share this Majority Report interview with trans actress Laverne Cox about the fascist assault on trans rights, the dehumanization of trans people, and how what I've come to define as the anti-trans pogrom fits in to the larger capitalist, patriarchal, white supremacist, and ultimately fascist project. While Cox is a well informed, focused, and insightful guest that's worth listening to in any setting, as a trans woman one of the things I liked best about this interview is how the two cisgender hosts of the show allowed her to control the discussion and ultimately create a conversation that I think is equally valuable for trans people, other members of the LGBTQ community, and cis-het folks who want to serve as accomplices, not just allies, for a trans community in the fascist crosshairs as we speak.
Cox and the hosts discuss the recent history of anti-trans legislation, the larger fascist quest to eras trans people in public life, and how dehumanizing language and anti-trans propaganda serve as a permission structure for both eliminating trans people's civil rights and further dehumanization. They also talk about the reality that this project to justify and create the anti-trans pogrom is a well-funded, highly coordinated endeavor with architects across the entire American right, as demonstrated by the fact that almost everything to demonize, oppress, and erase trans people that GOP fascists have accomplished since Trump took office, was laid out in advance in Project 2025. Cox even articulates what most trans people already know in their hearts but many cis liberals treating us like a political football don't seem to understand; that the path the fascists are adopting here may lead to the genocide of trans people.
The group then shifts focus to talk about the relationship between the anti-trans pogrom, white supremacist patriarchal Christian Nationalism, and a larger fascist project that ultimately serves to enrich and empower predatory capital. Cox notes that what folks who aren't on the firing lines call a "culture war" is really about civil rights for those who are. The gang points out that policing of trans people in public life, is really just an extension of an ideology that views women as property, and that opens up a pathway to gendered power dynamics and enforced policies that harm *all* women, not just trans women. As both Cox and Vigland note, the fact that dehumanizing anti-trans propaganda ultimately serves as the thin end of the wedge for this larger fascist project and touches on other forms of targeted oppression towards non-white people, women, migrants, and young people, means that taking about the anti-trans pogrom is not a distraction, but rather a vital step towards defending us all from fascism.
Finally Cox talks about the importance of folks who support trans people actually rehumanizing trans folks in the broader culture, why allowing the right to force the discussion into a lens of medicalization is an unworkable strategy, and why nobody who isn't trying to get trans people murdered should be "consorting with the likes of Charlie Kirk." In a moment that may come as a surprise to cis people, she points out that even conceding to the idea that trans identities, trans rights, or trans existence are topics to debate, is an unacceptable level of dehumanization and helps the fascist cause. As Cox poignantly notes, "there is no middle ground when someone wants you extinguished."
