Recovering from Saturday's ride, so today it's just a quick commute to church and lunch and a short extra ride around the mall.
First time to park 🚲 at Mom & Tina's. 🍴☕ It felt so safe. I only used my thin cable lock (so no one casually rolls away with my #bike) and left my crappy old phone (the one with the bad ghosting screen) on the handlebar. Of course, I also had my #antitheft alarm on... And I sat close to the door.

Your Galaxy phone will now automatically get locked if someone steals it
At Google I/O last month, Google announced many features for Android that prevent thieves from accessing a stolen device and data in it. The company said that it would roll out these features to devices running Android 10 and newer versions of the OS later this year.
The two features we are talking about are called Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock. When these features become available on your Galaxy phone or tablet, they will automatically lock your device when someone steals it or tries to take it off the grid by switching off the cellular network, internet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
Why this actually needs "AI", I don't know, though. Is machine learning not good enough, or plain old trained algorithms (or 4th Industrial Revolution tech). Seems everything that processes anything in 2024 is AI-powered. I really can't wait for the buzzword of 2025 to kick in. It's amazing how the old words then quickly disappear from the PR slogans.
Still, having "automated" detection and locking for theft is a good thing to prevent the loss of phones. I just hope it does not lead to escalated levels of theft, where like with vehicle theft, it moved to kidnapping or hijacking because vehicles became too difficult to target on their own without the owner.

There are some more modern solutions to securing your bike's parts together:
1. Hexlox: Hexlox insert into the heads of your bike's existing Allen bolts. As long as the bolts are steel (most are), these magnetic inserts drop right in and prevent an Allen wrench from fitting into the bolt head.
2. Pitlocks: Pitlocks look like misshapen nuts, surrounded by a dish that prevents somebody from attempting to wrestle it off with an adjustable wrench.
3. Pinheads: Pinheads look like domes of metal, dimpled as if they'd survived a scale-model asteroid strike. An individualized key slips over the dome, gets traction on the dimples, and unscrews or tightens it.
These are actually great low tech solutions to hopefully preventing your bike from being stolen (rather than trying to track it after it is gone). The nuts and bits can be reused on future bikes and don't wear out either, so although not cheap, they can be used for a long time.
You can't make a bike thief-proof. If they want it badly enough, they can defeat any security bolt or method. But that's only if you have a Mission Impossible-style team of all-star bike thieves targeting your ride.
