Two hours in to being on a properly maintained and populated instance and it’s very clear this is a different Mastodon experience. 2k character posts! Spontaneous follows! Posts, boosts and follows all work first time! I can engage with high traffic accounts without DDoSing my instance!
Slightly concerned that the low traffic / bandwidth and sporadic availability problems may have actually enhanced and been the USP of the the experience for my atypical brain but I guess talking to people is kinda the point #antiSocialMedia

Anyone remember the days of #flickr #explore? 15-20yr ago I used to get excited to be in it. Now all I see is algorithm, algorithm, probably bots, algorithm.
My recent photo of Sh2-142 The Wizard nebula is doing "well" on flickr. 3815 views, 143 faves, 15 comments. Nice? But, at the risk of offending some people, every single comment there is a generic quasi-spam text that could equally apply to anything else in Explore.
Sigh.

So somebody followed me this morning. When this happens, I go and look at their profile and usually follow them back as they are likely to share interests.
Today, however, I ran into something I used to see on the bird site all the time: people who would follow me and would subsequently unfollow as soon as I followed them back.
Is this just a case of a sad person that wants to stroke their own ego by the number of followers they have?
