  1. Hearts Based #Education and #AntiColonial #Learning in #Healthcare (H.E.A.L) Project is using the #arts to combat #HealthcareBiases.

“The H.E.A.L. #HealthcareProject provides #SystemicChange that is long overdue. I often think about the extractive ways that we talk about #CulturalSensitivity and #CulturalCompetency,” said Nicole Halbauer, H.E.A.L. Healthcare Project Manager.

The project will use #poetry, #storytelling, and #VisualArts to better understand patient experiences with a goal of #humanizing the healthcare system by bringing together #FirstNations #creators and #activists based in #PrinceGeorge.

They will work to create #ArtsBased and #AntiOppressive learning materials for healthcare staff including #nurses and #doctors.

The #FreeLessons will be available on the H.E.A.L Healthcare website.

The program is being organized by the Health Arts Research Centre in partnership with the Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health.

The project is part of the federal government’s plan to create better and safer health systems for Indigenous people with $126.7 million being committed to the project over three years.

  3. Today was one of those days where it was emphasised that so many of the challenges my clients face are systemic and made worse due to a lack of resources. It is frustrating because our society treats so many issues as problems for the individual rather than acknowledging the pressures that increased disconnection, cost-of-living pressures, and so many other social factors place on people.

  4. People who use ableist and body shaming language to dunk on public figures are sending a message that they aren't allies to neurodivergent and people with body differences.

If someone is a shitty person, talk about their crappy beliefs, criticize their shitty behaviour. Using ableist slurs and body shaming language implies that those elements are the problem rather than the actual issue.

  5. Quote Calendar Day # 20

"The likelihood that your acts of resistance cannot stop the injustice does not exempt you from acting in what you sincerely and reflectively hold to be the best interests of your community."

  6. Quote Calendar Day # 17

"A freedom which is interested only in denying freedom must be denied. And it is not true that the recognition of the freedom of others limits my own freedom: to be free is not to have the power to do anything you like; it is to be able to surpass the given toward an open future; the existence of others as a freedom defines my situation and is even the condition of my own freedom..."

  7. Quote Calendar Day # 17

"Labels do violence to people. You can't treat the label; you have to treat the person behind the label."

  8. Quote Calendar Day # 15

"Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them."

    - Karl Popper (1945)

  9. Quote Calendar Day # 13

"My father always used to say, 'Don't raise your voice. Improve your argument.' Good sense does not always lie with the loudest shouters, nor can we say that a large, unruly crowd is always the best arbiter of what is right."

    - Desmond Tutu

  11. Quote Calendar Day # 9

"What is most important is to cease legislating for all lives what is liveable only for some, and similarly, to refrain from proscribing for all lives what is unlivable for some."

  14. Use CWs, but reflect on who are you doing it for. Use CWs if you are providing safety and care for the marginalised and underprivileged. Don't use them if you are protecting the comfort of those with privilege. For many the world is a hostile, brutal, and cruel experience. To protect those that are already shielded from it is unnecessary and their comfort should not come at the expense who live it. 3/3

  15. I am an advocate of ethical self-disclosure in the therapeutic space. The idea that practitioners can be neutral in a place where we are encouraging others to vulnerable is privileged, arrogant, and oppressive. We need to recognise and understand our own reactions, responses, and unconscious communication. Doing so allows us to be authentic and build a safer and more effective therapeutic relationship.

How you can be a good ally
    1. Use affirming language including the person's pronouns
    2. Take responsibility for your own education and learning
    3. Listen to the voices of lived experience
    4. Challenge your own internalised biases and beliefs
    5. Be actively anti-oppressive, push back against hatred and bigotry
    6. Ask those you ally to about what they need, don't assume. 3/-
