  1. We need more #antiTrust and #antiMonopoly laws.

We need more #union protections and #proWorker laws.

We need TIGHT REGULATION over Silicon Valley tech companies AND strong, bribe-proof sentences for those willing to burn our rights, our intellectual property, our jobs, or our planet.

We need #rightToPrivacy and #bodilyAutonomy and #humanRights laws with teeth and politicians afraid to dare question them.

  4. I know the Critical Drinker isn't a fan favourite with everyone in the fediverse. If I'm honest - and I always try to be - that's part of what makes CD videos a guilty pleasure for me.

Anyway, my recent invective against 'identi-Moonies' probably had most of those people urging their mods to nuke my account from orbit. So if you're seeing this, you're probably capable of at least some degree of nuanced thought.

  6. Why it matters:

Consolidation like this hands more power to a single media company, hurts competition, and lets executives squeeze higher fees from pay-TV providers — which means higher bills and fewer local jobs.

  7. I just remembered one other thing I wanted to comment on from this edition of the Bradbury Group;

    thedailyblog.co.nz/8pm-live-to

Which was Bomber's advocacy for a state-backed supermarket chain. With all due respect to Comrade Bradbury, this is right up there with GST off fruit and veges as far as uninspiring policy goes.

But maybe showing US and EU legislators that WIPO treaty rules against adversarial interoperation ("anti-circumvention") are working against the interests of most copyright holders could move the needle?

Could someone please ping @ladyada for me? I sent her a message, but I'm not sure she checks her Mastodon account.

LinkedIn wanted to take a picture of my face to allow me to log in, so I'd prefer to not use LinkedIn to connect.

I'm planning to start a FOSS / FOSH nonprofit company to create accessibility products for the blind. We both worked in the MIT Media Lab at the same time. She's a hero of mine, and I was hoping to get a few cycles of her time, if she has a couple to spare. I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!

  25. A quotation from Molly Ivins

Seems to me it’s a simple concept — the concentration of wealth is a Bad Idea. Since capital tends to concentrate, it is one of the functions of government to oppose this tendency. That’s why we used to have antimonopoly laws and the like.
When you see government encouraging the concentration of wealth, check your wallet.

Molly Ivins (1944-2007) American writer, political columnist [Mary Tyler Ivins]
Essay (1991-02), “Season of Drear,” The Progressive

One outcome of the 2001 antitrust case against BorgSoft was to stop them making all web browsing on Windows depend on Internet Exploiter. The Safari WebView on iThings does *exactly* what BorgSoft were forbidden from doing.

I'm guessing Goggle use various backhanded tricks to push app devs into using the Chrome WebView on Android. We're certainly at risk of future enshittification making it compulsory there too.

  40. "In an unprecedented move, the Japan Fair Trade Commission on Tuesday issued a cease-and-desist order against Google for violating the country's anti-monopoly law by forcing manufacturers to preinstall the company’s apps on their Android smartphones.

This is the first time that Japan has issued such an order against any of the major U.S. technology companies referred to collectively as GAFAM — Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft.

“By binding smartphone manufacturers and telecommunication carriers, Google has made it difficult for other competing search engine applications to be used on Android phones,” Saiko Nakajima, a senior investigator for digital platform operators at the commission, said.

“Google's conduct in this case has created a risk of impeding fair competition concerning transactions — thus, we have determined that this is an act in violation of the Antimonopoly Act,” she added."

With a suite of #AntiMonopoly regulations like EU DMA/ DSA, we can move to services that respect our privacy, without getting cut off from folks who are still in the DataFarms. We can do the same based on other criteria too (software freedom, social benefit company structures, etc), and the DataFarmers can't just reacquire us, by buying their competitors without scrutiny.

We still need robust laws to protect privacy etc. But real consumer choice makes enforcement practical.
