  3. Environmental Changes 🌡️🦠

    The rise in temperatures and alterations in precipitation patterns are leading to several significant consequences:

    • Accelerated #bacterial growth rates

    • Extended survival of #pathogens in the #environment

    • Changes in the geographical #distribution of #diseases

    • Altered effectiveness of #antimicrobials

  5. R to @ECDC_EU: Key actions are needed to reduce #AMR:
    ➡️ promoting prudent use of #antimicrobials;
    ➡️ supporting improvements in infection prevention & control;
    ➡️ strengthening research in developing new drugs; ➡️ ensuring that policies & procedures are in place at the national level.

  6. R to @ECDC_EU: Resistance of #Salmonella & #Campylobacter bacteria to commonly used #antimicrobials continues to be observed frequently in humans & animals.

    However, the combined resistance to critically important antimicrobials for human medicine remains very low.

  7. Drug-resistant infection - The agricultural sector has escaped scrutiny

    "The issue of untreatable infections is no longer an abstract notion; it is now a reality."

    "The Joint Expert Advisory Committee on Antibiotic Resistance (JETACAR) said "the transfer of antibiotic-resistant bacteria along the meat chain is believed to be one of the most significant sources of antibiotic-resistant bacteria from animals", and the scientific consensus since then has only hardened."

    "For decades, the meat industry used the drugs with relative abandon. The majority of this use had been not to treat sick animals, but as a key ingredient in animal feed to promote rapid growth and act as a prophylactic."

    "JETACAR revealed two-thirds of Australia's antibiotics were being used in animals, and most of that for "subtherapeutic doses" to increase growth, prevent disease and "reduce feed requirements"."

    "It was only a few weeks ago, three years into the new strategy, that the Department of Health finally awarded a $438,000 contract to big-four consultancy KPMG for the design of the surveillance system."

    >To meaningfully tackle the AMR superbug threat, along with most other environmental crises of our time, intensive farming will have to change

  12. Curbing this spread will require considerable changes in how #food is grown and #diseases get treated, the report warns—agribusinesses, the #pharmaceutical industry, and governments across the globe must rethink, in tandem, both their prolific use of #antimicrobials and their #climate footprint.

    In other words, it a To The Barricades moment, and a #SystemChange moment.

    Because the system we have built is brittle, and that makes us vulnerable to the least shock.

  13. Everyone needs to know about this:

    "Unsubtly titled "Bracing for Superbugs", and released Tuesday by the UN Environment Programme, it marks perhaps the global body’s most direct attempt yet to bring attention to the scary feedback loop linking #GlobalWarming, the increase of #antimicrobials in our #food supplies, farm #pesticides, and medicine with the spread of #DrugResistant bacteria, fungi, and viruses.
