"A lifeboat museum says it has been forced to close after its volunteers were targeted by anti-migrant protesters.

"Poole Old Lifeboat Museum said it made the decision after several incidents of 'protesters verbally assaulting our volunteers'.

"Protesters gathered in the Dorset town after about 140 migrants arrived in a single dinghy that had crossed the English Channel, prompting a major anti-migrant demonstration in Portsmouth on Sunday.

"After lifeboats took 120 migrants intercepted off the Isle of Wight to Eastney in Langstone Harbour, some crew members were targeted by protesters, with their photos and names shared in posts on social media accusing them of treason."

BERLIN — "Past German governments sought to temper Europe’s most hardline impulses on migration. Now, under Chancellor #FriedrichMerz, Berlin is vying to lead Europe’s anti-immigration charge.

"The stark shift in Germany’s migration stance under its new government promises to accelerate the EU’s #HardRight turn on migration as the bloc prepares to implement a series of new measures aimed at drastically reducing the number of asylum seekers entering Europe — and #deporting more of those who do make it. As European leaders negotiate on how to put these measures into place, those from some of the EU’s most hardline countries are welcoming Germany’s new role.

" 'Germany is leading in some of these very important talks,' Kaare Dybvad, #Denmark’s immigration minister, told POLITICO. 'We’re happy about that.'

"In a highly symbolic example of how Germany’s government is now seeking to propel Europe’s migration shift rather than moderate it, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt recently hosted counterparts from several European countries with tough migration stances — including #Austria, Denmark and #Poland — on his country’s highest mountain in the Bavarian Alps, the Zugspitze, adorned at its summit with a golden cross.

" 'We want to make it clear that Germany is no longer in the brakeman’s cab when it comes to migration issues in Europe but is part of the driving force,' Dobrindt said at an elevation of nearly 3,000 meters.

"That message is being received well in #Brussels [#Belgium].

" 'If Germany contributes more, becomes more committed, that’s very, very positive, because we’ll simply make progress faster,' EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner told POLITICO from the sidelines of the summit in #Bavaria. 'And that’s why I’m very pleased that the German government has chosen this path and is also strongly supporting the Commission in implementing the things we’ve put forward.'

"Germany’s new willingness to lead Europe’s anti-immigration front removes one key obstacle preventing European countries from enacting policy proposals that were until recently deemed beyond the pale. Those include plans to deport migrants to third countries and to process asylum claims outside the EU, copying the #UK’s failed #Rwanda scheme, which Merz previously praised as 'something we could emulate.'

"While Germany’s migration shift began under its previous left-leaning government, Merz’s coalition, under rising pressure from the anti-immigration #AlternativeForGermany (#AfD) — now the largest opposition party in Germany’s Bundestag — is taking a far harder course to stem the defection of conservative voters to the far right."

"A CBP presentation for an 'Industry Day' summit with private sector vendors, obtained by The Intercept, lays out a detailed wish list of tech CBP hopes to purchase, like satellite connectivity for #SurveillanceTowers along the #border and improved radio communications. But it also shows that state-of-the-art, AI-augmented surveillance technologies will be central to the Trump administration’s #AntiImmigrant campaign, which will extend deep into the interior of the North American continent, hundreds of miles from international borders as commonly understood.

"The recent passage of Trump’s sprawling flagship legislation funnels tens of billions of dollars to the #DepartmentOfHomelandSecurity. While much of that funding will go to Immigration and Customs Enforcement to bolster the administration’s arrest and deportation operations, a great deal is earmarked to purchase new technology and equipment for federal offices tasked with preventing immigrants from arriving in the first place: Customs and Border Protection, which administers the country’s border surveillance apparatus, and its subsidiary, the U.S. Border Patrol.

"One page of the presentation, describing the wishlist of Border Patrol’s Law Enforcement Operations Division, says the agency needs '#AdvancedAI to identify and track suspicious activity in urban environment [sic],' citing the 'challenges' posed by 'Dense residential areas.' What’s considered '#SuspiciousActivity' is left unmentioned.
Customs and Border Protection did not respond to questions posed about the slides by The Intercept."

MUNICH, Germany (AP) — "More than 200,000 protesters rallied in Munich, Germany, on Saturday against #FarRightExtremism ahead of the country’s #GeneralElection.

"The far-right, #AntiImmigrant #AlternativeForGermany, or AfD, is in second place in recent polls and has prompted widespread protests across the country before voters cast their ballots on #February23.

"The protest at Munich’s Theresienwiese — where Oktoberfest takes place each year — brought a significantly larger crowd than expected, according to the German dpa news agency. The event’s organizer estimated the crowd could be up to 320,000 people, many of whom carried signs against the AfD with slogans like, '#Racism and #hatred is not an alternative.'

"The protest was supported by #ActivistGroups as well as the #MunichFilmFestival, #churches and Munich soccer clubs FC Bayern and TSV 1860, among others. Police told dpa that the demonstration was peaceful.

"Officers from the Metropolitan police this morning led local forces in a raid on Bentley Urban Farm in Doncaster, said eye witnesses. They arrested twenty two activists, who were preparing to transport infrastructure, sanitation and accessibility equipment to the upcoming climate camp at Drax power station.

"Crashing sounds were heard from outside the site as vehicles and equipment were impounded. The detainees were taken to York police station, where they are being held for conspiracy charges: in this case, to interfere with key national infrastructure at Drax Power Station in Selby between 8 and 13 August. Media repeated the police’s claim they are “not against protest but against crime”.

"This morning’s pre-emptive arrests, ahead of a peaceful protest, contrast sharply with the State’s failure to foil recent far right violence, said Reclaim the Power. 'Black and Brown communities are under attack with fire and bricks and the police have made the unfathomable decision to divert resources away from those communities to arrest 22 people taking equipment to make a peaceful climate protest safe and accessible', said the group in a statement."

Scottish Government issues 'protest' statement ahead of #Glasgow '#FarRight' rally promoted by Tommy Robinson

"The Scottish Government has warned the right to peaceful protest should not be used to justify hateful or violent behaviour ahead of a planned rally in Glasgow promoted by #TommyRobinson. A '#ProUK rally' has been planned for the city’s George Square on September 7, with the English Defence League (#EDL) founder, whose real name is #StephenYaxleyLennon, posting about the event on social media.

"It follows violence in #Southport, Merseyside, this week after the killings of three young girls in a knife attack. Police said the scenes were sparked by supporters of the #farright claiming those present backed the EDL – although the organisation has not existed for around a decade.

"Police across the country are bracing for more protests following the Southport stabbing attack, as one force said disorder 'simply will not be tolerated'.

"The Muslim Council of Britain said hundreds of mosques were strengthening their security and putting in place protective measures ahead of more planned protests. There are fears Islamic places of worship could be targeted during demonstrations expected to take place over the weekend.

"A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'The unacceptable violent disorder witnessed in other parts of the United Kingdom this week does not constitute peaceful protest. There is no current intelligence indicating similar incidents are likely in #Scotland, but we will continue to monitor developments.'

"Mr Yaxley-Lennon shared a post on social media that said the Glasgow event would coincide with 'other pro-UK rallies'. The post said the event would be a 'peaceful protest to share our distrust and fear of the future'.

"Mr Yaxley-Lennon did not indicate whether he planned to attend, tweeting only: 'The British are rising.' Mr Yaxley-Lennon is the subject of an arrest warrant after leaving the country shortly before a major legal case against him."
