"The facilities produce raw materials used to make pharmaceuticals, clothing, cosmetics, detergents, construction materials and military explosives in the UK and Europe. Gas is a key ingredient in production.
"Ineos said the move will affect up to 1,000 of its staff, of whom 245 work directly at the site.
"But the BBC understands workers across the sites will be kept on while Ineos tries to buy liquefied natural gas (LNG) directly from the US at lower prices - which could take up to a year - or waits for gas prices to go down.
"Ineos is asking governments in the UK and the EU — where most of its products are exported to — to put in tariff protections against Chinese products.
One plant makes acetic acid, which is used in vinegar, paint and glue. Another makes acetic anhydride, a key ingredient of aspirin, and the third makes ethyl acetate, which is used as a solvent and for decaffeinating tea and coffee.
He said the current government's energy policy was 'economic vandalism on an industrial scale'."The wholesale price of natural gas — used for heating homes and generating electricity — has almost doubled in the UK and Europe since July.
"Analysts say the main driver has been a reduction in global oil and gas supplies.
Ineos says that its plants in Humberside are 'among the most efficient in the world', producing materials with half the carbon footprint of US rivals, and only one eighth the footprint of Chinese equivalents. It did not immediately specify when the plants might start again, or what conditions would make that possible.

"He told BBC News last week that he has lost confidence in the UK, describing the country as "on the slide", which he blamed on #HighTaxes and high #immigration.
"Sir Jim, whose wealth is estimated to be around £15bn, has prompted controversy in the past with his comments on immigration. He was a supporter of Brexit but has been a tax resident in Monaco since 2020."

"A lifeboat museum says it has been forced to close after its volunteers were targeted by anti-migrant protesters.
"Poole Old Lifeboat Museum said it made the decision after several incidents of 'protesters verbally assaulting our volunteers'.
"Protesters gathered in the Dorset town after about 140 migrants arrived in a single dinghy that had crossed the English Channel, prompting a major anti-migrant demonstration in Portsmouth on Sunday.
"After lifeboats took 120 migrants intercepted off the Isle of Wight to Eastney in Langstone Harbour, some crew members were targeted by protesters, with their photos and names shared in posts on social media accusing them of treason."

It was hard not to read the outfit as a conscious nod to Canada’s erstwhile friends south of the border, because President #Trump, #MAGA and the United States are unmistakable strands of the conversation in Alberta these days.
"After flipping some flapjacks, the premier addressed the crowd, making sure to toss a pancake to her base by saying that immigrants — or 'newcomers,' as she put it — had caused government spending to skyrocket. She reminded people that the Stampede is an expression of bedrock Albertan values: grit, determination and getting back in the saddle. The implied contrast was with the hopeless mandarins in Ottawa who can’t be expected to know anything about such matters.
"It would have been a typical Stampede breakfast were it not for the sightings of a formerly reclusive political creature: the baldfaced #AlbertaSeparatist, a breed apart from the more common species, the alienated Westerner. They came in groups like #Albertans4Freedom and #UnitedAlbertaFlags, which advocate Alberta seceding from Canada to become an independent #JudeoChristianNation.
"They encouraged #Albertans to vote yes on Oct. 19 to a referendum question asking whether Alberta should start down the road to separation, an impulse that the Trump-friendly Ms. Smith — without explicitly endorsing separation — has given new life to by pushing for the referendum question to be on the ballot."
