Filled 0,7l of #antifreeze and 2,5l of water until the reservoir reached and stayed at "max" while idling (until thermostat opened). Not exactly "-20°C" mixture, more like -10°C but good enough for now.

Good: no obvious leaks = I can drive short distances.
Bad: no obvious leaks = no simple fix.
Good: The timing belt needs replacement soon anyway and this requires taking the whole front of the car apart so at least this is required only once, now.

It was good to learn that Bluecol Universal #antifreeze/ #coolant (ethylene glycol based) - bought as an emergency purchase at a local garage for a relatives Ford Fiesta that was low on coolant (topped up on Christmas Day) does protect to -37 Celsius - ofc its unlikely it will ever get *that* cold in England but it does give some peace of mind (particularly with strange weather we get where it can be unseasonably warm one week and freezing the next) #CarMaintenance

#PetOwners are also #warned to be wary of #antifreeze , which tastes sweet but is #deadly for animals. Canada West #Veterinary Specialists recommended washing dogs' feet, legs and belly after a walk in case they came into contact with antifreeze or other dangerous chemicals.

@cm Thank you, I'm doing fine. I'm in the beautiful #Yukon. :-) The #antifreeze I put in the fuel worked fine. What doesn't work is the #Subaru #hydraulic system meant to keep the trunk door open so you can (un)load items. That door just slams shut unless I hold it up. The seat is hard until you heat it. And it's either AC or hot air, which isn't ideal, because human breath turns to ice on the inside of the windshield quickly.
