  1. Not cool: I mainly use Firefox, but keep Vivaldi around for sites that only work with Blink/Chrome-based browsers.

I hadn't opened Vivaldi in a while, and it had updated since the last time. I have my start page set to blank/empty - and when I opened it there were two big sponsored speed-dial entries shown.

I have always had all sponsored/suggested/etc features turned off.

    Bad #Vivaldi.

  2. If you follow #Firefox news at all, you will have seen the recent announcement of Mozilla's new CEO. And being a Fediverse denizen, you probably experienced a wave of disgust, nausea, betrayal, anger, and / or shame, because the new idiot is all-in on "AI" / LLM integration in Firefox.

The best brief summary of the announcement I've seen is this:

    mamot.fr/@ploum/11573093543727

If you prefer your hot takes a little saltier, this is another entry in the apparently unending series of self-inflicted injuries:

As others have noted, it's one of the clearest examples of a company getting their own customers' wants completely ass-backwards ever seen. And that includes topping all the "AI" announcements #Mozilla has made over the last couple of years, so it's really saying something.

There are community/volunteer #forks of Firefox that remove the #LLM #junk, but many people, including me, don't believe that's a particularly #sustainable model.

  7. So, interesting Mastodon thing I just discovered, that sucks badly, and y'all shout be aware...
When you use inline hashtags, which I've preferred since the first time I used hashtags anywhere, some Mastodon clients will still move them to the bottom of the post, resulting in a missing word in your text.
This is particularly obnoxious because part of WHY I prefer using them inline is to reduce character count.

  8. IMHO The whole implementation of #YouTube auto-#translate is a #trashfire.

    1) 🗑️ The quality is just trash; the meaning is soo often butchered, it's embarrassing.
    2) 😡 It's a forced feature, no way of disabling. Changing language doesn't help cuz YT will just force-translate to THAT language. 🤦
    3) 😕 YT shows ZERO indication the title was auto-translated. No, "Auto-dubbed" doesn't count, that's something different.

Classic example of an #AntiFeature in #proprietary software.

  9. @jeanbaptistemarie @12train

  11. Good news, everybody! [1]

#Patreon has now added a new useless "#suggestions" widget to my timeline, and probably yours too! It tries to get me to sign up for more creators and pay them more money, without actually having a clue what I want to see!

It's another case of a company trying to jam junk down your throat to goose their "engagement" metrics. Somebody probably got a #raise or even a #promotion for nursing this #antifeature through the pipeline. I hope they have to drink themselves to sleep because of it.

It's clutter, and it pisses me off because it's just one more thing making it harder to actually see the #content I'm #paying for. Never mind the fact that adding un-skippable #advertising to a service I pay for every month is driving me awfully close to just shutting my Patreon account.

Remember, Advertising Shits In Your Head.

    [1] Not actually good news.

  12. Browsing the , when suddenly...

    Lvcencaitxxcvscxkou

The is drunk. No, actually, it's progressive enhancement's evil twin, regressive corruption.

Go there without enabled to see it yourself:

    wiesbadener-kurier.de/lokales/

The links work, so it's actual .

Lol, Wiesbadener Kurier, but also, you too.

It's not , does anyone know what it is?

  13. After blocking most annoying things on the web already, one of the main design anti-features that still annoys me is those login screens that default to entering an email address, and then it emails you sign in link to log in 🤦‍♂️.

Jeezus. Most sane people will be using a password manager these days with a hot key or autofill set up, and such a design just gets in the way of that secure instant login convenience.

  14. I have compiled a set of filters for #uBlockOrigin for anyone that uses #Bing to hide the annoying "AI"-related antifeatures. Please note the "AI"-generated "stories" can't be fully hidden as they'll cause the page to not fully load and #Firefox to partially lock up. This filter list is copyright-free as it's not a creative work. You can use this on Firefox for #Android if you didn't know it had real adblock.

"It will finally show you details on why a given #AntiFeature was applied"

Niiiice :D Thanks a lot for your hard work <3

  17. #AndroidAppRain at #FDroid with 23 updated and 3 added apps:

    * Geekttrss: Tiny Tiny RSS reader with transparent offline mode
    * Ching Machine: Automatic "ching" for Thai music
    * StarGW Weight: simple app to record your weight

Plus: The latest version (1.17) of the F-Droid client was marked recommended. It will finally show you details on why a given #AntiFeature was applied, for many apps (and for more apps with the next index update).

    Enjoy your #foss #android #apps with #FDroid :awesome:

  18. My wife and me wanted to swap the ownership of a #Chipolo One tag (i.e., who adds the tag first to their app). First me as a non-owner removed it from my app, then her from her app. Trying to add the tag again ("pairing" as it's called in the app) failed on both of our phones as the tag was locked on the Chipolo server after the removal. Why, oh why is it locked? Now we are at the mercy of Chipolo customer support to unlock it for us. What an #AntiFeature.

^^^ this is a serious #antiFeature/(#)darkPattern we predicted and, lo-and-behold what do we find…

    >>> *will tag you one last time (not you Humane Tech we already showed you :) *

  20. @IzzyOnDroid
One thing that we noticed is that the wiki page that is meant to show which apps share the #UpstreamNonFree #antiFeature, appear to lack some apps, namely that org.mozilla.fennec_fdroid one.

If the website is generated automatically, but the wiki isn't, then moving that page off the wiki might be helpful.
